US Politics

By rights Trump should be the most important defender of free speech and democracy in the world. The sad reality is that he is a would-be dictator, and he is so disparaging of alternative viewpoints that he didn't believe he really lost the previous election. Mind you most of us would disbelieve it if we lost to Biden !

No.

I don't mean to insult you or indeed any of us who fit this...including myself but this is boomer era thinking. We have to adjust to realities.

The world has changed and the sooner everyone wakes up to that the better. It doesn't matter who is in the White House this was coming.

There are economic shifts happening and there is nothing that plebs like you and me can do about it. However, this constant expectation that others keep us safe either militarily or economically is still residing within an era before 2008/covid/Ukraine and the consequences therein.

Maybe he’ll just rape another woman and get himself in trouble again.

Seems to surround himself with rapists, groomers and sex traffickers doesn’t he, ol Trumpy?

B0llocks.

Not a rapist - that was b0llocks.
As for accusations involving others.....?

Tell you what, look at Trump's children and then compare them to Biden's.

Trump's kids didn't do drugs, have no criminal convictions and are clean cut.

Your description above doesn't match with that and in reality is to be found much more in the Democrat playbook......As the Epstein list shows.....Far more of your political crowd on that list mate.

unfortunately Trump is going after anyone who he feels has either 'wronged' him or questions his actions.

Oh the irony.

They literally tried to put him in jail, yet he is expected to be above it all.

I warned against this at the time.....they fully deserve to reap what they sowed....everyone of them.

Their foot soldiers are attacking Musk....just as they were supported in burning down cities and rioting in his first term.....and I fully support Trump matching their own playbook. They wanted this, they should get it.

And two assassinations attempts that I want answers on as I have suspicions on that as well.

I expect the same people who are now attacking Tesla owners and dealerships also glue themselves to the road to protest against climate change?

mcGregor ? is that the same woman he was snogging in the Hotel foyer AFTER the alleged rape ? and has there been a mad legal-scuffle to control the cctv tapes ?

i don't normally believe in conspiracy theories. But........

It’s amazing how many of the pseudo intellectuals who spend their waking hours posting on internet forums seem incapable of actually using their eyes, ears and brains. So many seem to just swallow the Big Lies posted by that most avid spreader of misinformation, Donald Trump.

The only person responsible for the possibility of him going to jail was himself. He had to do the crimes before there was even the slightest possibility of being found guilty of them.

That he avoided it by deciding to run again, and have expensive lawyers prevaricate so the cases could not be heard, was the only use of political shenanigans on display.

The fact that some in the USA are capable of understanding this and are resisting is the only glimmer of hope in the current sea of darkness.

It's not the fringe elements who decide to make stupid protests that matter.

It's the wider disgust that ordinary people now feel toward Musk, and everything he is involved in, that matters.

I am thinking of changing my car this year and either a fully electric, or plug in hybrid would be the option. It was already very unlikely to have been a Tesla but now it's 100% certain not to be.

That seems to be quite a common reaction. The number of people who have moved away from X since it allowed the posting of disinformation to go unchecked will also take its toll.

Musk can, of course, afford it but will the businesses tolerate it? Will they even survive?

Bill Gates and George Soros have tried to use their fortunes to do good, without them damaging businesses. Musk doesn't appear to be very sharp to me.

Sure. A man worth nearly as much as Zuckerberg and Bezos combined. He must be a right plank.

No one questions that he has become seriously wealthy. How and why? He seems to have a knack of choosing clever people and of picking areas that are ripe for growth. He has also relentlessly harvested government subsidies. So he has business acumen.

That though does not equate to political nous. Something that appears to be totally absent.

He's not a politician. He's involved for his financial nous.

You don't insult me. Forums like this should be about exchanging different viewpoints. But I interpret your response to mean that you see the demise of western liberal democracies as inevitable (but I may be mistaken). I don't accept that, as anything else feels to me as if it leads to tyranny when one set of people impose their views and their ways on the rest by force. I think we can still build consensus for tolerance, freedom and democracy, and I would fight for that. I don't expect the USA necessarily to protect us militarily, but I do expect their leadership and in large part their people to uphold the key values which made the country the most powerful in the world.

Firstly I would say we live in neo/social liberal democracies rather than 'liberal democracies'....as there are significant ideological differences between neoliberalism and classical liberalism.

Even classical liberalism has always been more myth than reality, similar to libertarianism....there are noble aspects to both but they have always been more an ideal than a reality.

Secondly I'm old enough to have experienced the impact on society from moving from a more socially conservative society to a socially and neoliberal one.... and I have to say, apart from technological developments most of the metrics are far worse for most of the people.

That's the main reason that I don't see this sociopolitical model lasting.....because it's failed.

Whatever system you talk about, 'imposes their views' on the majority. The Labour party we have now only got voted in by a minority of the public yet rules over it. As for this 'tyranny', we live in a society where people have arrested every year and in many cases jailed for posting opinions others don't like.....I've said it many times but I had police sent to my door because someone on here didn't like my opinions.....So I would ask you does the society you describe actually match the society you live in.

You are probably more liberal personally than the system you defend.

I would say that while you don't expect the US to protect us militarily that...in effect....when you say your expect them to 'uphold the key values', this in reality means the same thing.

Whilst Trump might think you can run countries like businesses it’s obviously not true. There are different skills involved. Which in the case of the USA is doubly ironic as Trump isn’t actually even a good businessman.

Musk has no political skills at all. He is using a scattergun approach to deal with issues that require the skills of surgeons. He is making enemies everywhere.

We are witnessing government by executive order. This is unsustainable.

Congress will only tolerate it whilst it suits them. If their own futures are threatened they will quickly turn. That day is not far away.
