I watched this on PBS the other day

It's a good history of New York from the 1960's to the Twin Towers. Some of the Democrat mayors were absolute disasters and the fore runners of today's BLM / Woke / Anti police Politicians.

The two Mayors who come out of it well are Mayor Koch (Democrat) and Giuliana (Rep.

I knew some of this stuff but John Lindsay (1960's-70) was an absolute disaster and was responsible for NY going bankrupt and crime ridden. He was on the left of the Democrat party but somehow ended up going Republican and then back again

David Dinkins was another whose term was noted for his failure to address policing and racial issues. The reason Giuliana was elected was because of him being such a disaster.

Worth a watch as it's a microcosm of American cities and their problems.

As I have mentioned before I am not a fan of Andrew Torba, who owns Gab, and the way that site allows the unmoderated spread of lies, disinformation and misinformation. Nor do I appreciate the constant promotion of his outrageous religious views accompanied by the requests for donations.

Nevertheless even the most disagreeable characters can occasionally produce something that makes you think and open up possibilities not previously considered.

This is one:-

It might well explain why Musk has jumped on the bandwagon and why Trump won.

Thanks, it was very nice. My wife worked though on both Christmas Eve and again today, as did the friends we have been hosting, so I did all the cooking but still have some time without demands.
Nut roast?

Charlie Kirk, Elon Musk and Stephen Yaxley-Lennon.

What a politically astute trio with well-thought-out progressive ideas!

The idea that Musk should support Kirk's ignorant recommendations regarding Yaxley-Lennon proves how out of touch he is. That he now has the ear of the next President defies all logic.

Kirk is an especially suspect individual, who promotes conspiracy theories and misinformation. He is a good example of the problem that exists in the USA and one that has obviously infected some minds here too. This is the Wiki entry about him:-

Having given news and politics a rest over the Christmas and new years I'm all set to jump back in 😃

Looking forward to Trump taking office this year, the death of woke and return of common sense not being "far right".

I played bowls today for the first time in 2025 and fell into a conversation about New Year Resolutions afterwards.

I am considering changing my car this year and will probably go electric. I am resolved not to consider a Tesla, in much the same way I don’t buy Murdoch newspapers.

One of the others, with whom I have never previously discussed politics, said she had resolved never to visit the USA again. Her reasoning being that she is unwilling to spend any money in a country so stupid as to elect Trump for a second time.

Both daft, I know that. Things that make no difference at all but nevertheless it does show how deeply people feel about what is happening there.

It’s my very strong impression that these views are held by almost everyone in the UK and those that pop up here are a tiny minority. The only place I ever hear any kind of defence for Trump is here.

A lady at the bowls club? That's pretty compelling evidence.

yet shes happy to live in a country that was stupid enough to elect Starmer, Reeves and Rayner??

Quite obviously she doesn’t see that as you do.

I can see why. You can disagree with political policies and dislike politicians but voting back into power someone who attempted to overturn democracy, and defends those who took direct action in his support, is on another level.

from your reply I see you are happy with 2 tier kier, Rachel from accounts and Rayner why are you bothered about Trump?> At least he cares about Americans, unlike Starmer who just wants to kill off OAPs

Of what?

There is an almost 50:50 balance within most clubs.
Not at my local bowls club. If anything they seem quite unbalanced.
I meant the fact that a lady at your bowls club doesn't like Trump. Why wasn't Kamala appraised of this crucial development? It would surely have been the bedrock of her campaign.
