US Politics

Although still not certain it already seems inevitable that Trump will win. Whilst deeply disappointing, profoundly shocking and greatly concerning there is no point dwelling on it.

It is what it is. It’s what it means for us and the rest of the world that must now consume our energy. The American people have spoken. They must accept the consequences themselves and do their best to limit the damage. They have their constitution and the separation of powers to help them. The independence of the Supreme Court is going to be tested. What Biden does in his remaining weeks could be critical. The Supreme Court has given Presidents immunity from the consequences of any official act. Biden can use that. However it cannot stop the sentencing that Trump is due as a result of his conviction in New York. He could be in jail when inaugurated.

This will embolden both China and Russia. I would not want to be either Taiwanese or Ukrainian today. I anticipate a flood of refugees from both. NATO phone lines will be hot. Once the world has digested the implications I suspect we will see a decline in share values.

It will also embolden the far right here and in Europe, initially at least. It might have the reverse effect once Trump actually takes office.

It’s only 4 years. We survived before and can again. Let’s hope the damage is not too bad and can be moderated by the good people in the US military and security forces.

Nah. Keep it on.

And I would urge people to not get overly excited about this victory...yet. Trump cucked last time. Ditched the real smart voices before the year was out. Lets hope that this time he has learned his lesson. Bannon is the guy I want to see back in the Whitehouse. If that happens, then we could be on the way to a bright future.

And Trump has to now SMASH the Democrats. Grind them down. Put new people in charge of the FBI and then start smashing the doors down. Cannot be any kind of bi-partisan vibes anymore given what they have tried to do to him.
Will Sheffield Wednesday let him go though?

if Trump truly is winning, then i will tune in to the BBC / RTE. My First time watching them in years.
Better entertainment than the morning of Brexit.

Lefty Soy boys, feminazi's and globalistists all rolling around the ground, throwing their toys out of the pram and sh1.tting their nappies. Gary Linekar announcing himself to go on hunger strike.

Beautiful.

ps....already the RTE news channel is reporting 'other news'.....The rape trial of Conor McGregor, the gender pay gap, climate change, etc. The newsreader is almost struggling to control his tearful voice.
Apparently for hissy fits MSNBC was the channel to watch last night. The presenters calling Trump voters fascist and Florida a fascist state.

As for social media keep an eye on the luvvies saying they will quit the country, gotta remind them of their promises in a few weeks 😀

Still not official but looking good for Trump. If you want a laugh look at the BBS thread starting around page 15 which was about 1am in the morning.

At that time it was all positive with the BBS predicting that Harris will win North Carolina. By about 4am it was all doom and gloom and the end of civilisation as we know it.

Many of the posters claiming this is the end of democracy and that the Dems will never get back in. Complete nonsense of course in 4 years Trump will be gone and they will have another election.

Hyperbole at its finest - perhaps send this in as an opinion piece to the Guardian. If you haven't noticed, there is already a flood of refugees from Ukraine. I've forgotten how many are all over Europe. As for this emboldening China, they haven't been exactly dealt with by the current regime. And Trump is not friends with China - he will fight them economically first, which is where it really hurts them. As for Russia - the war in Ukraine can end. Where exactly are we getting in it? Nowhere - just spending money and just about holding back Russia. How about we don't waste our money anymore? How about food, gas, oil, fertiliser, all coming back to normal prices? Of course no one wants Ukraine given to Russia but can we really say that none of Ukraine is largely Russian?

You survived four years of what exactly? COVID happened - other than that the US economy was really getting on track. That's why Trump is in, people are suffering economically under the Democrats. That's the main reason. And just like every other Western country, the people have had enough of streams of economic migrants on the take.

That's the two areas that made it obvious the Democrats would lose. They couldn't even listen to their own advice. They should have listened to the people about the economy and the border, rather than lecturing them on how fine it all is. Some European politicians, the left that is clinging on, should look at this and take some lessons. But they won't, they're still lecturing us and telling us it's all great when it isn't.

One of the more interesting takes for the evening came from 'The Young Turks'. They are the Novaramedia of the US. And in their summing up at the end, along with other points during the show, they made some interesting points about the Democrats and their attitude to crime. Apparently on the California ballot there was a proposal that the rules would be changed around forcing prisoners to work in the prison system there. A very progressive policy. And it got defeated. They made the point that people are not buying the Democrat position on crime and are sick of it being excused and people who object to all kinds of liberal measures just dismissed. To be fair, I watched to enjoy the meltdowns and there were a few of those BUT they also seemed to be grasping the issues more than most.

As I have said, I am no major cheer-leader for Trump at the moment given how he effectively crumpled last time in office but I do sense that some voices on the US left, as opposed to the bought and paid for Democrat establishment, are beginning to understand a bit more why they got trounced.

Harris is a great example of a politician failing upwards. From her early days in San Francisco job after job she failed in and somehow got promoted. Then she ran for the nomination against Biden only to be the first to drop out even before the primaries as no one was interested in voting for her. Her reward was to be on the ticket and then get the nomination through the back door.

How bad do you have to be that you can't even make it to the first primaries?

I saw an interview last night with a group of voters who should have been nailed on for her. They were voting for Trump because they didn't like how during the campaign she avoided the serious political interviews and went for the celebrity guest spots e.g. SNL.

She is a pro choice female politician (when abortion is the no 1 issue for women) who has been unable to garner the woman's vote.

As I said just how bad can you be to lose to Trump.

Keir Starmer has become the next world leader to congratulate Donald Trump on what he calls a "historic election victory".

"I look forward to working with you in the years ahead," the UK's prime minister says, adding:

“As the closest of allies, we stand shoulder to shoulder in defence of our shared values of freedom, democracy and enterprise.

“From growth and security to innovation and tech, I know that the UK-US special relationship will continue to prosper on both sides of the Atlantic for years to come.”

Yup nice one Sir Keir let's hope that Trump forgets Labour campaigned against him 😵

They might be beginning to understand but they've got a long way to go.

This reminds me of Emperor Hirohito broadcasting after Hiroshima and Nagasaki: "the war situation has developed not necessarily to Japan's advantage".

There’s no whining from me!

It is what it is. Now to deal with it. Just like Brexit it might be stupid but you cannot stop others being stupid. As with Brexit those others will learn the hard way but there’s no point in feeling smug when that happens. We need to prepare for, and deal with, the consequences and I am quite sure that’s exactly what will happen.

Move on. Yesterday is done.

Not to worry any day now Trump will be prosecuted for Russiagate, any day now. 😀
He will be sentenced for his New York bookkeeping scam very soon.

Jail is unlikely but possible. So he could start his next term behind bars.

He will doubtless instruct his new AG to throw out the election interference case but 4 years from now it could be resurrected. By then though he could no longer be a danger, unless he tries to extend his time, so it might be decided not to bother.

Not only is seeing Trump WIN a fantastic and reassuring thing but yet again seeing Wissy proved wrong and eating humble pie…puts into focus just how wrong his opinions and predictions continually are 😃

Had a glance at little reddit but dont want to waste too much time on them, its funny though 😀

We saw a flood from Ukraine when Russia first invaded. I expect a bigger one now.

Whilst Trump will rack up a trade war with tariffs that will fuel US inflation he won’t interfere militarily over Taiwan. The brightest will leave. Let’s hope we will accept them. Or indeed in the disputes in the South China Sea. Which is not good for any of the western leaning states in the region. The balance of world power was always shifting east but Trump will give it an almighty push. Make America Great Again? More like kick it in the teeth.

It won’t stop for long with Ukraine. Putin will lick his wounds, consolidate and then push on. Without US resolve it will require the rest of NATO to step into the breach for 4 years to hold back the tide. These will be dangerous days.

Trump did nothing for the US economy. Any pre Covid growth was due to Obama, just with a time lag. The inflation in the early Biden years was down to Russia, Covid and Trump. The recovery now is down to Biden, but the credit will be claimed by Trump.

Flows of people are just part of the modern world. They demand effective management but are not just taps you can turn off. Politicians who suggest they can are peddling dreams.

That the people buy those dreams is true and has always been true. It’s how populists win. They lie, as Trump lies, and they win.

What’s surprising is that the people know Trump lies, but choose to ignore it.

Doing the same thing twice and expecting different results?

The right will gloat and think they can do the same in Europe but when it gets messy in the USA they might find we are better at learning lessons than the Americans.
