Time to start doing Business Steve..!!

Ollie will be off next summer, I’ve no idea what he expected that we so far haven’t managed. The team is decent but as others said, perhaps our budget is held back on replacing players.

Is Franca out long term again? I’ve not heard what happened to him

Not sure of veracity, but apparently the Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung had an interview with Glasner where he said
"
“Even though all the players are still here, we haven’t made the most of the transfer window so far. I was promised that we would be more active and bring in the new players earlier this year.

“As of now, I have 17 outfield players! I hope we don’t lose any more. If that happens and we get four new ones on deadline day like last year, another false start is possible.”

The self-inflicted wounds of the European debacle and failure to replace Freedman could be coming home to roost
Our spending, to date, equates to less than 0.2% of the total PL outlay
I called this 2 weeks ago, when I started this thread, whilst others were/are happy with the inertia, clearly OG isn’t and agrees that we need signings..!!

Quite clearly assurances were made to OG about early recruitment that haven’t been followed through by SP..!!

I really don’t get this thing about replacements - our issue last year was quality in depth, even if everyone stays that’s still the issue - that’s further magnified by our qualification for Europe and the extra games that brings.

If we just focus on replacing those that move on we’re not moving on / evolving the squad we’re standing still at best and arguably moving backwards - because replacing an Eze “like for like” for example would be very difficult.

Following just a replacement strategy would detract from all the momentum created by winning the FA Cup and qualifying for Europe.

Meantime others around us are recruiting and improving their squads - so in real terms we’re currently going backwards..!!

Someone mentioned how would you improve our perceived first choice XI - I would argue that Diomande, Hackney and Guessand would walk into that first choice XI and very much improve us, whilst with the others remaining providing much needed depth..!!

Our competitive season starts in 10 days time - OG ain’t happy and we’ve / SP has done nothing of substance - it ain’t looking good..!!

As I said at the top “Time to start doing Business Steve” otherwise winning the FA Cup and qualifying for Europe will be pointless..!!

100%, it's quite clear the club can't match the managers ambitions, we're consistently the lowest spenders, the board have done an amazing job on the budget we have but it's clear we just cant compete financially with most teams in this league, especially the top half.

I think there's truth in both of the previous posts.
Glasner is an ambitious manager who wants to push the club forward and backs himself to be able to achieve that.
Sadly the club doesn't seem set up to match that ambition.
I don't mean that as a criticism, but a realistic assessment.
The club is well run and in my view, as a long term supporter, Parish has done a remarkable job.
However, with the current set up we're probably at around the celling of what's achievable.

Surely Woody can start chucking some cash in for signings!? How much wood would a Woody chucker chuck......
Interesting if I have a little think about it.

Apologies: It could be that Woody will finance the main stand or the majority of it. Whereas we need to rely on the others for transfer funds - or sales or profits, or perhaps gamble on European money.
Knowing how Blitzer and Harris have been, coupled with Parish not really being an investor; not really hearing anything from people like Franco - or expecting anything - then you find that this current situation is perhaps just the reality of our finances.
We don't know we're in Europe at all either for sure - we can't gamble on it.

Just pure speculation. Life likes to prove me wrong constantly - so the upside of this post is that we'll probably buy Guessand and Diomande or someone for maybe fifty mil. That would be ok - if we don't lose anyone.

Who would Hackney and Guessand walk in front of ?
One plays in the championship (ease was one of the best players in the championship) the other has never played in England.

On the other hand - there is very little point in signing for signings sake.

We signed Esse back in January -

Say the first team is

Henderson, Muniz, Lacroix, Guehi, Richards, Mitchell, Wharton, Kamada, Eze, Sarr, Mateta

Add in backups

GK: Benitez

Defence: Riad, Sosa, Lerma, Clyne

Midfield: Esse, Hughes, Doucoure

Forward: Nketiah, Franca

Anything we add needs to improve the squad - the first 11 I'm not sure who you would add to replace that - if they all stay. It also comes down to who we could afford with no outgoings.

There's an argument to say that's worth keeping powder dry and funds available, as we may need to spend to replace Guehi next year - with no income coming in against it.
Diomande, Hackney and Guessand would walk into your perceived first choice XI and improve it..!!

Also think Sosa replaces Mitchell at LWB..!!

And you know this how, two in, none out so far, he likes a small squad, judge when the window is closed

Have I missed something or didn’t OG just say he was promised early signings - hasn’t happened and we haven’t made the most of the transfer window so far..!!

That’s how I know came from the Managers own mouth..!!

We do need a couple of players IMO.

However, Glasner does have as his disposal the team that started the cup final. We might not have a stronger squad than last year, but its hard to argue that its weaker.

Current set up has only been in place a week with Johnson replacing Textor! Palace will have who they want lined up, but it will depend on departures. Its similar to dominoes, once one falls everything starts to move.
As stated by another poster, acquiring players is not the same as popping into Tesco and buying a new loaf of bread, its a lot more complicated. The main criteria's are they going to improve the squad and are they the right character to gel with the squad and Glasners tactics.

Other teams seem to be recruiting fine - so why can’t we..??

also I'm sure Glasner would rather be in his position than some others.

Its very east to say, 'Parish hasn't done anything', but everyone keeps saying how difficult the market is. Lets not lose sight of the fact that we still have a v good first 11, and a lot of teams around us are weaker than they ended last season:

Everton - Sounds like they are in trouble, Moyes said they need 6-10 signings
Bournemouth - lost 2 of their best players, not yet replaced
Wolves - lost their best 2 players (and they were basically a 1 man team last year)
Brentford - lost best player, captain, manager (and Wissa will be gone soon)
Fulham - only brought in a back up keeper

While I certainly agree that it’s preferable to get your business done early and have the squad that you’re going into the season with in time for pre season, there are some factors to consider.

Speculation around Guehi and Eze hasnt materialised into anything yet. So Palace can’t sign some of the so called replacements until there’s traction on those moves. And those signings would potentially be the more expensive ones. And usually more complex.

I think any more signings to strengthen the squad will come but there could be some price corrections that come into play before they happen.
Why are you talking about replacements - we need to improve our squad depth - irrespective of whether anyone departs or not..!!

What difference does a new owner make ? Owners wealth and club wealth are completely separate, if we had the money we would have already strengthened, there's no benefit to waiting, other than financial, we just can't compete financially, I quite enjoy watching us punch above our weight, I just dont see glasner being happy with that.
