Thoughts on the window

I am very happy with this window, the squad is now much stronger. You can’t replace someone like Olise and it wasn’t our choice for him to leave.

Anderson leaving was a shame but I think we have a better defence.

Sarr / kamada / Nketiah given time will give us a strong attack and multiple options and energy. Glasner wanted more pace in the squad to suit his high energy style. Plus Doucoure getting back to fitness, like a huge signing. Then Franca when recovered will give the team another boost.

The perfect scenario now is mateta and Guehi to cause headlines by signing new deals

I personally think it was one of the best transfer windows i think we have cover in most areas apart from LB and our midfield is definitely stronger than it was last season the striker area has definitely better after signing nkeitha and sarr and i believe our defence is one of the best defences outside the top 6 so im very happy with this window

We were unable to secure a left-wing back but Jeffrey Schlupp could be deployed in this position should Tyrick Mitchell be unavailable.

Clyne, Ward and Schlupp can all play left back / left wing back at a pinch, so I would not sweat. Franco Umeh has also played there for the 21s. Maybe a focus for the January window if required, otherwise we are in pretty good shape.

For me the issue is that LWB is now a serious vulnerability in our side.

Mitchell is good defensively, not brilliant, but poses little going forward. He's a less talented version of Wan-Bissaka.

That was fine in a back four under Roy but in a back five his emphasis is to attack. He bombs forward, leaving a gaping hole on the left, but the attacking contribution from him just isn't worthwhile. West Ham clearly saw this as their goals came from that side.

This isn't meant to be an assassination of him but I just think his game clearly doesn't suit this style and it makes him the weakest link.

He'd almost be better off on the left of our front three.

Did you make that on your Speak and Spell? 🤣

Olise is a right-winger who after OG joined moved a few yards inside, but still did most of his attacking play on the wing, as shown by the heatmap. He never played as a central forward/midfielder aside from a brief period under Vieira. Eze plays more centrally and spends less time out wide because he's not a left-winger. That shows in his heatmap for last season. You can argue all you want Lanzo, but the stats show Olise played out wide and still does at Bayern. Kamada is, however, seemingly playing narrower, which would tie in with the YouTube video you posted.

Looking back now that the dust has settled, the window wasn't as good as i thought it was, the team that would have been first choice at the end of last season was,

-------------------Henderson-------------
--------Richards--Andersen--Guehi------
Muñoz---Wharton---Doucoure---Mitchell
--------Olise----------------Eze-----------
------------------Mateta-------------------

Olise we had no choice but to let him go, Andersen seems a massive mistake, Sarr was a decent buy, and maybe Riad, both as cover, Edouard going on loan was good, but it seems now, that Kamada, Lacroix and Nketiah don't seem compatible to Glasners style, all we needed was a left footed attacking player to replace Olise, we spent 40/50m and 220/250k a week on the three, when that should have been spent on a new contract for Andersen and a Left footed replacement for Olise

I think that letting Andersen go is increasingly being seen as a mistake. This may be compounded when Guehi ends up going for a lot less than was being held out for this summer.

Whilst Guehi is a fine player, I think that he would have been easier to replace than Andersen. That replacement may already be with us in the form of Riad, Lacroix or Chalobah. None of these feel like an Andersen replacement to me. We really seem to miss his presence, leadership, aerial and creative abilities. Maybe one of the others will prove me wrong (and I do hope so) but not going by what I have seen so far.

It will be interesting to see if the big boys favour Branthwaite over Guehi. If we do decide to cash in, it may come down to how much Newcastle are prepared to pay.

It is slightly less painful watching Olise thrive in the Bunseliga rather than in the prem. Bayern must be kicking themselves over what good business he is turning out to be. I can't quite work out why OG isn't starting Sarr when he has most potential to fill the Olise void.

I still think that we will come good but to me it's looking more like finishing 12-14 rather than sneaking into Europe.

Riad better than JT
Lacroix is getting better game by game, sure in a couple of months we'd have forgotten about Anderson

Olise has basically been replaced by Sarr, Kamada and Nketiah.

I echo a lot of the view on here in wanting the most like for like replacement Sarr, to be given a crack. Gets us closer to the structure of last season

It’s been suggested that we didn’t go for a left footed right winger because there is a view that JRS will fill that void in due course and maybe even come January given we have the option to recall him. I guess that notion has some credibility if, as has also been suggested, we didn’t expect any champions league club to trigger Olise’s release clause this summer. If so it perhaps goes some way to explain why we find ourselves without the balance we had last season. It’ll be interesting to see what we do in the January window.

I really don't get this notion that we we didn’t expect any champions league club to trigger Olise’s release clause. Clause wasnt crazy for a CL team and a player with his potential. I would have been surprised if he hadn't gone.

A season with Bayern and the price they paid will seam like a snip.

You’re right of course but they may not have considered Bayern or one of the big European teams coming in for him and in terms of English teams the clause option seems to have worked with Eze. If so it was a mistake.

IMO thats because of Eze's performances. Out of the england squad too. No way he'll get a big move unless his form improves.

Olise's only real issue was staying fit.

We were hamstrung on the price though. We could have set the price at £200 m but he wouldn't have signed.

Yeah of course. Not questioning the price, we did what we had to do to keep him for another year.

Only questioning this odd notion that we didn't expect any one to come and pay the price.

I think you know the players that when one, will go on to perform at a higher level.

For me Olise was certain, and IMO Wharton will do too

Always felt like Wilf would struggle elsewhere, and think Eze will do to.

Don't think we didn't expect anyone to come in & pay the price, i think it was the quickness of it. The club(& us) probably thought he would go this Jan window or at best next summer, instead Bayern saw a bargain & that was that, not too dissimilar to what we did to Reading. I see he's been called up to the full French squad, but not JPM.

I love the optimism of 12-14. Right now I would take not getting relegated. We’ve had one of the easier starts to the season on paper had no wins and not looked like winning a game. Next lot of fixtures look harder so it’s more than likely we will get 9 games in with no wins and 3 or 4 points. Worryingly performances are not improving and if anything are going the other way. Coming out of the transfer window we have brought in a few players who are at the level of being subs in the EPL (Kamada, Nketiah, Sarr) and lack quality. Sorry for the doom and gloom but I look at this and worry we are in a real relegation fight.
