Thoughts on the window

I know we’re only in October , but stories have already emerged in recent days about the January window.

1) Galatasarray are linked with Lerma for an £8 million move.
We’ve seen with the moves of Ayew and Anderson that Palace are not averse to a business deal where older players only have a year or two remaining on a contract, even if the move causes at least short term pain.

2) On the back of his excellent form at the end of last season and during the Olympics , Mateta is apparently looking for a bumper deal which it’s said Palace is reticent to offer.
I’m sure there will be interest in him during January, so the club may have a decision to make.

I suppose both of the above will partly depend where we are in the table in January and which players we are looking to bring in at the time.

We’ve hardly had any continuity is selection availability this season and I think there’s yet another international break next month .
I have some sympathy with Glasner in trying to organise a settled team and I see this potentially being applicable when the transfer window opens too.

This is a really good post with which I agree. There’s a danger of selling on too many players leaving us with no continuity at all. Lerma has been a really good and solid player, part of our ‘spine’ I would say. If Guehi goes too, and maybe Eze too, Who is going to be left?

I can’t see Lerma being sold in January. He is in the penultimate year of his contract but we have an option to extend for a year. Given Doucoure’s injury problems and Wharton’s issues he’s an important part of the team as a DM while also being able to fill in at centre back. He might be moved on in the summer if Ozoh looks ready to stake a place in the first team.

I feel as though we're a team lacking a strong 'identity' atm. Not a criticism at all, just an observation.

For better or worse, 'plucky small club', 'one man relegation battlers', 'trying to punch above our weight', and 'Hodgson steadying the ship, albeit it's boring' are all identities I have felt we've had.

'Winning the league undefeated with Glasner' was never likely to happen, no matter how last season ended. We're now in a position where a new identity is not yet known, we lost a couple of prime assets and the newish manager plus a different looking squad is trying to take shape.

Personally, I'd wait this season out before doing anything dramatic and try to navigate the window unnoticed, as best we can. Speculation will always be rife though and the emotions/money in football do not often produce logical thinking (not saying mine is, it's just an opinion), from clubs, managers, players or of course fans too!

I think Guehi is a certainty to go, will not get more than 50m, Lerma's contract will be extended, nobody will pay the money for Eze, Mitchell will go, unless you want him to leave on a free, Mateta will go, Sarr is on a 5 year contract, unless their is a real release clause 30m, might make Chalobah permanent, if he wants too, left footed attacker and left WB/FB still needed.

Lerma is 30 in a couple of weeks.
I don't think we'll extend his contract if we already have a existing one year option.
I also believe that we would sell him if an acceptable offer came in January.
It's clear that finances are heavily dictating policy and the reputed £8 million fee for Lerma (a free transfer acquisition) may well prove too tempting to turn down.

I also believe that if Mateta hasn't signed a contract by January he could also move.

The summer window hasn't fixed the squad and I can see a further balancing operation coming into play in January, although Parish always says he doesn't like transfer activity in 'difficult ' January markets.

I haven't heard Parish say that since Palace picked up Munoz and Wharton in the last one. Our drastic underspending relative to rivals in the summer should mean we will be in a good position to take advantage of any opportunities: and it's looking as though we will need to
