Billy Stewart for me.Janis Joplin has been mentioned on here before for her covers, but one that I think was wonderful was her interpretation of Summertime originally written by the Gershwin brothers for Porgy and Bess. A brilliant version.
Summertime has been covered over 1600 times, second only to Yesterday by Lennon and McCartney which, at over 2200 covers, tops the list.
Roberta Flack was far better in my opinion. However, her version was also a cover, the original was co-written and recorded by Lori Lieberman in '72.I've always preferred the Fugees version of 'Killing Me Softly' to Roberta Flack's original.
Certainly some attractive covers there eagleman. These were the best for those of us of a certain vintage . . . Top of the Pops album series - Cover Heaven
