In your case, understandable. In Lineker's it's tax avoidance - from both parties, BBC and Lineker. That's unless your one year deal was a couple of mil.i'm guessing you have no idea what the IR 35 regulations are.
I have previously been employed in short term contracts and as such signed say 6 month contracts. I got paid x per day on the days i worked. I got no holiday or sick pay and i could be dismissed at short notice.
The company paying me avoided paying employer national insurance as i was not classed as an employee.
I paid tax through my own company - paying both income tax and corporation tax.
This is essentially how Lineker appears to be employed.
IR 35 would class me as an employee and would tax me accordingly. However, i don't get the other benefits that direct employees get. Furthermore i would have to pay the employer NI (over 13%) on top of the employee NI and income tax. So you are an employee for tax purposes only.
Seems unfair to me
