Esse has been at the club for a year now.
He had the best of starts with that tap in against Brentford on his debut, but since then he's found the going tough.
I don't think he's benched purely for making mistakes. He has an opportunity to impress OG in training every day. But a year on and he hasn't earned the managers trust. That's not good for him but for the team they can't miss what they haven't had. Every player makes mistakes, and coping with adversity is all part of the game. Players do receive psychological coaching as well.
I don't think he's been mismanaged in the least.
I couldn't agree more.
I'm baffled by the idea that Esse's limited game time can only be explained by a personality clash, tactical issues, conservative management, or poor coaching. I think it is explained perfectly well by the lack of quality he had shown in his few outings to date. It's easy to say he can't be any worse than Deveney or Kamada, but that's nonsense. Of course he can. He often has been. We played a child in his position in Europe the other night, and he looked a better bet in terms of awareness and class.
I get that Esse must've done something right at Millwall for us to buy him, but taking a punt on what you hope is a burgeoning talent is a risky business. If we wait longer to be more certain of the player's ability, we risk losing out on him or paying far more for him. If we gamble early we get him cheaper, but are getting far more of an unknown quantity. Look at Franco.
It's quite possible that, in Esse, we're dealing with a player who did better than expected for a raw teenager playing his first games at a lower level than ours but who, had we not intervened, would have hit a natural plateau at Millwall by now. We opted to pay the premium for hope value, but that doesn't mean he was a safe bet, or that his omission from our side indicates something unnatural or wrong.
I hope of course that he becomes an excellent top flight player, or even just a useful one to us. More than that though, I hope he's being sensible with his money and has a level head. Even with everything that has happened in his young life and career to date, it's still so easy to end up not even a professional footballer. I was at AFC Whyteleafe Vs Croydon in local non League football the other day. Luke Dreher, Nia Kirby, and Brandon Pierick were all playing for Croydon. These were premier League prospects five minutes ago.
If I were Esse I'd jump at the chance of a loan somewhere just to get to 100 professional games ASAP. Never mind developing into our next big star, just establish yourself as an effective, battle hardened professional footballer. Playing is everything, and it isn't happening here.
