Romaine Esse

It’s disappointing how OG has all of the time in the world for some players , Devenney and Kamada spring to mind but Romain ….
He did cost a goal and game early in his career with us ,

Kamada chopped Tete and got sent off finishing the game off for us. That was very early in his time here.

Esse has been at the club for a year now.

He had the best of starts with that tap in against Brentford on his debut, but since then he's found the going tough.

I don't think he's benched purely for making mistakes. He has an opportunity to impress OG in training every day. But a year on and he hasn't earned the managers trust. That's not good for him but for the team they can't miss what they haven't had. Every player makes mistakes, and coping with adversity is all part of the game. Players do receive psychological coaching as well.

I don't think he's been mismanaged in the least.
I couldn't agree more.

I'm baffled by the idea that Esse's limited game time can only be explained by a personality clash, tactical issues, conservative management, or poor coaching. I think it is explained perfectly well by the lack of quality he had shown in his few outings to date. It's easy to say he can't be any worse than Deveney or Kamada, but that's nonsense. Of course he can. He often has been. We played a child in his position in Europe the other night, and he looked a better bet in terms of awareness and class.

I get that Esse must've done something right at Millwall for us to buy him, but taking a punt on what you hope is a burgeoning talent is a risky business. If we wait longer to be more certain of the player's ability, we risk losing out on him or paying far more for him. If we gamble early we get him cheaper, but are getting far more of an unknown quantity. Look at Franco.

It's quite possible that, in Esse, we're dealing with a player who did better than expected for a raw teenager playing his first games at a lower level than ours but who, had we not intervened, would have hit a natural plateau at Millwall by now. We opted to pay the premium for hope value, but that doesn't mean he was a safe bet, or that his omission from our side indicates something unnatural or wrong.

I hope of course that he becomes an excellent top flight player, or even just a useful one to us. More than that though, I hope he's being sensible with his money and has a level head. Even with everything that has happened in his young life and career to date, it's still so easy to end up not even a professional footballer. I was at AFC Whyteleafe Vs Croydon in local non League football the other day. Luke Dreher, Nia Kirby, and Brandon Pierick were all playing for Croydon. These were premier League prospects five minutes ago.

If I were Esse I'd jump at the chance of a loan somewhere just to get to 100 professional games ASAP. Never mind developing into our next big star, just establish yourself as an effective, battle hardened professional footballer. Playing is everything, and it isn't happening here.

Agreed. Esse only made 60 appearances for Millwall so he is relatively inexperienced. We took a punt on him and so far it hasn't worked out.

The best thing is for him to go on loan and see if he can develop.

He may turn out to be another JRS / Franca, an almost but not quite player or he could be a Salako (Swansea City) and come back a much better player . Coventry are flying at the moment so a could time to join.

For some reason some fans get really touchy about Esse not getting more game time. As usual I trust OG to make the right decision. He works with him every day. There are reasons why he has not progressed and in view of the holes in our squad he should be concerned that even now he is not being used. Again I reiterate this is OG's call and he knows way more about the situation than any of us.
Maybe a change of scene would do him good? As with JRS I see him moving on permanently. Sometimes tranfers just dont work out. This is starting to look like one such deal.

Agree, however, he seems a similar type of player to JRS, skilful but a little lightweight and can drift in and out of games.

As we already had JRS, who OG has never rated, seemed a little pointless getting Esse in.

This is a smart move for Esse.
This will show just what he's made of because he's joining a a good team playing decent football and now he needs to show some minerals and get himself firing.
If he can do this and maybe knock half a dozen goals in his confidence will return and hopefully next season he'll be playing for Palace against Coventry.

I know nothing about the Coventry set up, but I can see that they are streets ahead of the nearest teams below them in the championship, so why do they want Esse on loan ?
Have they had an injury problem or something happened to make them want to bring in someone else ?
If they are doing so well, how will Esse get game time there ?

Whats the X Factor that makes this make sense.

Whatever happens, it's a cool name. I like getting ironic names on my shirt. I got bollocked for wearing a "We've got Edgar Davids" T-shirt to a recent game. I gave some smart-arsed answer, which is unlike me I know. It would be funny if that were someone on here.

They've only got one point from the last three games so maybe they want a bit of a boost.

you dont have a clue lad

I had a good chat with him at the hotel in Norway. He was in good spirits and seemed like a really nice lad. He said he was working hard for his opportunity in the team.

I also spoke with a couple of his school mates from STAC whilst at the Arsenal Carabao game. They said he was still working hard but that he had said he was going to go out on loan in January to try and get his mojo back.

There’s a good player in there somewhere, we’re just yet to see it properly. Perhaps his opportunity will come next season, if he does well at Cov and if Glasner decides not to extend his contract with us beyond the summer.

Esse is the last of a series of excellent finds (Eze Olise Guehi etc.) by Dougie Freedman, they cost very little too.

I think we are seeing the consequences of his departure at Palace, we look quite average.

😎
Freedman’s record as director of football was great. Eze, Olise, Wharton, Guehi, Anderson, Sarr, Munoz all signed on his watch. Only the occasional transfer like Nketiah hasn’t really worked out. Esse, let’s see. If OG stayed it would be a very long way back for him and I would see him getting sold. Given it is very likely there will be a new manager in the summer then he has more of a chance

If he does well they will sign him, if he’s useless then he’s miles off it.
The only way I think he could have a future at Palace is if he’s sent back injured and there’s a new manager next season.

Freedman's record was good overall, however, there have been a number of terrible costly buys that can conveniently get overlooked.

Only today we have just released Ahamada who cost £10m and probably at least £6m in wages over the last 3 years.
Holding and Franca were questionable buys at the time and nothing since has changed anyone's opinion.
Albeit cheaper, but the 2 lads from Derby were completely out of their depths.

Perhaps the biggest error was Max Meyer - the wonder kid who was clearly too lightweight for the prem and a team like us who had so little possession under Roy. That cost us over £20m in wages.

The issue we have, and I think it's the same thing for Tuchel as England manager, is that OG has a 6 month contract so there's no real motivation for him to develop and blood youngsters.

That's not to say he hasn't given anyone a chance, because he has. But realistically, assuming he leaves, his only focus is on the next few months and not the future.

In a sense this is good for us because maybe we'll win the Conference League (although not based on how we've played so far) but I feel like if he was tied down for another 2/3 years he might factor in the future as well as the present.

All that being said, he obviously has concerns about Esse's defensive contributions and we should all trust him on that as he knows best.

Let's hope he smashes the loan and then we can either sell him for a profit or he can play a bigger part next season, whoever is in charge.

We are also in a situation were he's fighting for game time amongst much more accomplished players, mostly full internationals with bags of top flight experience.

Even when the first choice 10's are out, he's behind Kamada and Nketiah.

To get any game time with us he needs to be really good. So far, partly I'm sure down to confidence, he's shown that he's not up to the level.

But as you said, lets hope he does really well there.

Yes I take the point but I think buying players is always an imprecise science so getting two thirds of them right is pretty good. I think this is especially true for a club like ours where we are buying a lot on potential rather than the finished article.

The hits have been big hits as well. We got great play and realised something like £80m in profit from Olise and Eze alone.
