Palace v Ipswich Match Thread

This is the pertinent point. If a back three was working I could see why there was a risk in changing. Where’s the risk right now? We have the worst defence in the division, conceding almost 3 goals a game and we have a 75% loss rate. It’s almost inconceivable we could get worse defensively by changing it
Prehaps because none of our players have a clue on how to play that system without weeks of work on the training ground? If you've ever played football at a high level you'll know training sessions are tailored specifically to the system we play. Switching to a back 4 is asking the entire squad to rip us their training schedule and start again. That would be fine if 1. we had the players to instantly be able to do that and 2. we had a pre season and weeks to work on it.

The back four is pretty simple. Wider in possession, narrower out of possession, stay in a line, push up as a unit, use the offiside trap (the more complex part). It's no where near as complicated as what we're doing now. Which I could fully explain, but would take a couple of pages.
To put it briefly, we're going wide in possession, putting space between the back three and the two wingers push on. We're seeing very few offsides as we're not running a trap. Out of possession it's supposed to be a flatter five - but that isn't happening. We're caught out in transition with the ball in behind at the flanks for nearly every goal.
Add in our inability to press and there are our goals conceded.
You could say our attack, even with limited options is going ok.
Midfield and defence aren't. Both caught out in transition every few minutes. Hence, a chance for the opposition loads of times per match.

If Mateta and Nketiah had put away their chances against Everton we COULD have won…
If Mitchell had put away his headed chance against Manchester City we COULD have had a draw…
If Disasi hadn’t been sent off yesterday we COULD have won.

Sadly this is the world we now inhabit, a world of ‘if’s’ and ‘could’s’.

You might as well say if Henderson had been sent off in the FA Cup Final and they had scored their penalty , Manchester City could have won the final.

Personally I prefer not to hide behind the world of ‘if’s and but’s’ and face the reality of our predicament.

As the saying goes ‘if my aunt had b….s she’d be my uncle.’

The international break is imminent and should give Sage a spell to get the defence up to speed.
Management is a strange business - last year Emery at Villa was rightly praised now they have 1 point from 12 after having had the team gutted. De Zerbi has 2 at Tottenham after spending about £300,000,000.

But you agree that the current system is a complete defensive shambles though right? So if it isn’t working then why wouldn’t you change it?

To be worse a back four would have to be conceding four goals a game. Right now we are conceding almost three.

Now I understand why some players struggle when they go off on international duty: "Gaffer, at the Palace I play in a 3 at the back with 2 flying wingbacks! It'll take me weeks to adjust to your flat back 4! I've only been playing at this level since I was 16, before that it was playground kick and rush, so much more fun!"

Because we are only a couple of weeks into integrating a new system. We've fixed the issue of not being able to score, now we need to fix the issue of conceding too many/re-addressing the balance.

We played well on Sat until the sending off. We weren't wide open like we had been against Everton and City. Even Boro.

Being objective, it was actually the most solid we've looked. Enciso was quiet, Benitez hardly had anything to do. And with 10 men, I'm not sure they had so much as an attack in the 2nd half until their goal. It was all us.

Most people calling for 4 at the back, have zero idea what they are talking about and if it would help. they are just calling for change. Which of course we could do.

Or we could knuckle down to fix the issues we have, with the plan thats in place.

Really? I thought it was a clear as day red card. I'd be fuuming if it was the other way and they didint get a man sent off.
Above all else it was a reckless challenge that demonstrated a lack of self-discipline for which one can expect to be punished. That mindset will never help the other players on the pitch.

Very true!
Furthermore, Mitchell, Richards, Tomiyasu and Disasi have all played significant parts of their career in a back 4.
It's not exactly new for them.
Despite the claims from one poster, I have never seen any words from the Palace hierarchy that we are committed to only the current system, and frankly I find that very hard to believe.

Never heard that saying: but love it - and will now use it!

I agree with what you say - think everyone just feels deflated at the moment - and we are all searching for solutions and answers. A typical Palace season

Training systems are entirely tailored to your next opponent. These are premier league players, the general attitude is, you're already the best in the world, you're expected to do, pretty much anything a manager asks but I agree with the rest, he's not going to change the system now but he needs to work on us defensively.

As one of those posters who have 'zero idea of what I'm talking about' since I would like to move to a back 4 with an enhanced midfield , does it follow that a newly appointed manager who shared that view and implemented such system would also have 'zero clue ' what they are talking about?

We conceded three goals to a newly promoted team at home! By any measure that’s terrible from a defensive point of view. The fact it looked a bit more solid just means it’s been incredibly bad up to this point. The most all over the place defensively we’ve looked since de Boer.

Those of us calling for four at the back aren’t clueless we are just using the evidence of our own eyes of what is happening. We are the worst defence in the division. The only really good side we’ve played is Man City yet we’ve conceded 11 goals in 4 matches.

With respect I’d suggest those saying we just carry on as we are might be the ones ignoring the evidence.

Ladies and Gents. A question....

Is there a worse expression used on this website than 'Pant Wetting'? what a c***, Forest fan, sounding term of phrase used by people pissed off because other fans who give a s*** about our club use when they see problems now or coming down the track.

People are allowed to express there views I know... but the term 'Pant Wetting' really f***ing gets my goat. A broad f*** off just naturally springs to mind when I read that term...

Forgive me for wetting the bed over that saying.

Picture the scene a few weeks hence, Parish calls Howe or Frank in,
'We really like the cut of your jib....but you have to play a back 5 and Kamada as a number 10 because we only play two in midfield and we spent quite a lot of money on Timber...'
