Why do people think, they can automatically switch to a back 4? They have trained and played as a back 3 unit for the last 3 years, they can't do that very well. So going to a back 4 in a heartbeat isn't going to work.

Khalaili was bought to play as an attacking wing-back in the Munoz mould.
He appears to be better going forward than defending.
 
The few players i know left from two years ago did not look happy yesterday. Especially Wharton and Mitchell.
Our biggest problem right now (as with most other premier teams) is a constant new influx of personnel from DoF, managers, coaches and players who do not know each other very well, but who have moved for the money, fame and fortune. Sounds like most posters left the ground yesterday disappointed at our situation. I certainly did as did most fans i listened to walking away for the stadium.
I have no proposals as to improving our current plight, but do know my biggest disappointment overall is how money has altered the fundamentals of our great game and it looks like this is accelerating nowadays for the worst.
 
If a new manager comes in he may prefer a back 4 so regardless of what the players may have been used to , this would be the new reality for them.
I doubt Crystal Palace will play a back 5 for the rest of time because it has in the recent past.
Furthermore it's difficult to see how the defending could be much worse than it currently is, and there's a good argument that the system is not helping with a powder puff 2 man central midfield, a disorganised back 3 and a right back who doesn't understand defensive positioning.
 
The day after the game before...

Had to stay off here... I was fuming and it was not helped one bit by those c**** Forest winning.

Anyway, my thoughts.
We have not been entirely awful in any one game. Every game so far this season we could easily have got a much better result if not for clear missed chances. If our Khalaili puts that chance away near the end, we go on and win that game 3-2. That is football. If Disasi doesn't get sent off (entirely avoidable mistake... plonker) I think we go on to win that game.

However this is the premier league and it has to be said that a more experienced manager shuts the door at 2-2 and takes the point. I am not moaning because the best part of the game was that last quarter when we really went for it... trouble is we have the worlds worst defence at the moment so we were always going to struggle on the counter.

I am trying to see positives. Larson showed he can play and finish in the last 2 games. Timber looks a decent buy and there has not really been any drop off with Khalaili compared to Munoz. Honest looks a very very good player so we might as well enjoy him while he is here (I see max was missing for Chelsea yesterday) good job Chelsea cant recall him as he is not there player yet.

BUT... What is going on with Wharton. The boy needed to step up yesterday with the arm band on. He looks a shadow of his normal self. Richards... what the f*** has happened to him. He was Mr 7 out of 10 every game last year. Looks all at sea this year.

The Manager. I like him. I like what he has to say but I'm a fan and it's not me he has to get playing his football. Something is clearly not going how we want and now Canvot has been pushed down. The kid is learning but he has shown some decent play since Marc left. Why he is sticking with a back 3 when we just don't have the players for it is baffling especially when we could stiffen up the middle of the park much easier with the likes of Hughes and Lerma fit and ready to play.


We badly need to get some harmony back. If Sarr is not back next game then I would genuinely f*** him off and get rid in January. Same with JPM. I personally would f*** them both off anyway because I would not be held to ransom by a pair of greedy 2 bob c****... and yes I would happily cut my own nose off to do it.

Let's hope between now and the international break Sage sorts things out. I fear he will be toast if after the long international break we are still all over the shop. Parish will not panic but he will also not risk our premier league status. I still maintain that Forest could be a turning point one way or the other.

No player is happy to lose. Especially in yesterdays circumstances. We win that game with 11 men on the pitch. We know it, Ipswich know it. We fought back to a deserved draw and then the heartbreak comes on the 90th minute. A cruel way to lose. No point in reading anything more into player unhappiness than that unless you know something the rest of us dont.

You are right of course no team settles on a system they will never change. That would be stupid. However, Palace have made it clear in actions as well as words that we have no intention of changing that system at this time regardless of who the manager is.

How can you be so sure we win with 11 men? It was 1-1 when Disasi got sent off and they had plenty of good moments

This is the pertinent point. If a back three was working I could see why there was a risk in changing. Where’s the risk right now? We have the worst defence in the division, conceding almost 3 goals a game and we have a 75% loss rate. It’s almost inconceivable we could get worse defensively by changing it
 
I haven't read this thread except the last page. I have no doubt as usual there will be sensible comments as well as the usual hysterical pant wetting 'we're all going to die' pessimists.
Personally I feel gutted to end up with nothing in that game but I think there are a few positives that are staring us in the face.
1. Timber was fantastic and once we sort our defence out he will be even more effective.
2. Kalaili continues to impress. Yes his defencive abilities are not as good as his attacking ones but thats why we play 3 at the back. Full backs support the defence in wide positions they dont define it.
3. Strand-Larson is off the mark and up and running. He is a talented predatory striker and if we keep playing to his strengths he will score goals.
4. If/when Sarr comes back we will have even more of a threat going forward. He's only damaging his own career by staying away.

The balance of the team looked good yesterday. Defensively there is work to be done. Richards not at his best, Disasi still getting used to the way we play. God knows whats going on with Canvot. Once this is rectified we wont leak as many goals as we have done recently. In my opinion with 11 men on the pitch we win that game yesterday even WITH the defensive frailties. Yes I'm disappointed with the result and some aspects of our play but I am also optimistic that Sage DOES know what he is doing, he does have a clear plan of how he wants to play and how we can achieve that.
