Liverpool Match thread?

Hard to disagree with any of that Teddy, on that basis it’s difficult to understand how the loss of Olise has made so much difference.
Its to do with what Munoz is doing. Olise's possession released Munoz, who last season was a spectacular player.
It was only today (I think) that Sarr started, giving Munoz more freedom, sadly it didn't last long but I think its the way forward on that wing.

I like Munoz but I do wonder whether our system of wing backs works particularly well. I’m convinced Munoz can play as a normal full back and still make the occasional foray forward. I would rather see us strengthen the midfield and build from there.

It’s Glasners call however we have suffered this season with our current system.

It may be a minority opinion but I'd make that one player of real quality. Andersen to me was alright but not much more. Not particularly dominant in the air, gave away some dodgy free kicks and for all his vaunted long passing ability he didn't actually do it very often. We might miss his organisational qualities but not his tendency to fall over at important moments.
Not outstanding but still our best player in the air. The threat of his long balls meant they had to be covered leaving more space elsewhere. He had some passion. I know Guehi is often talked of as good captain material but it rarely shows itself on the pitch

The threat of his long balls notwithstanding he should've at least been replaceable.

Could be worse. The U21s lost 10-0 to Brighton today.

That isn't a typo.
10-0! And there was I thinking our Under 21s were a handy side.

What's going on lads?

It's beginning to feel like there's trouble at t'mill.

negatives:
  • Guehi had about his worst game for us. Should have cleared the ball for the first goal, also let in Liverpool at the end. And didn’t even turn around. Lecroix totally bailed him out.
  • Mitchell was dreadful going forward. I can’t remember him having a positive pass completed all game.
  • Wharton is playing poorly. Tbf he doesn’t lose the ball in our half, but is having issues playing positive passes.
  • Eze is not playing well, although part of that could be Mitchell on his side playing poorly.
Positives:
  • Nketiah looks like a good buy, definitely our best player in the first half.
  • Lecroix played very well today. Getting better every match. Did anyone notice it was him that Wharton played the ball to down the right after the corner? Also saved Guehi when he gave up.
  • Mateta and Hughes looked very good today when they came on.
  • Henderson playing well.
I haven’t lost faith in Glasner. Still think we’ll be fine. Just a matter of hitting the back of the net.

So apart from the loss of Olise, Andersen, Johnston and Ayew. What other things have changed to make the squad loose there way so much? Have the coaching staff changed? Why aren't the guys not buying into their roles, that they seemingly bought into only a few months ago?

Just throwing this out there, but are the new "chosen" OG new boys unsettling the squad dynamics?

Is there a them and us mentality?

Or is it just down to good old confidence?

To be fair to Glasner, he tried Nketiah up front with Sarr wide, but it seems clear that we need another creative player to replace Olise. Sarr just doesn't appear to offer the same threat to defences. He is quick but lacking flair. Eze has it all on his shoulders now and after last season, it should have come as no surprise that we were nowhere near as effective in those circumstances.

We (still) also need to sign another wing back and hope that Doucoure gets fit.

The Liverpool game is no a good indicator of where we are. They are on top form and flying.
We have to dig in a grind out results against the lower sides. There are still 31 games left.

when roy was in charge he made sure we did the simple things correctly like passing and basic defending we now seem to have lost that ,the same thing took place when pv took over, i think we might have to go back to the basic technics of the game ,the playing squad is good enough to get out of this mess but we might have to bring somebody else in to do it :not roy: but in his day he really was a great manager

Once again we reflect on a very poor 45 minutes but with a much improved second one.

This team have not been outplayed for 90 minutes this season. Neither have they dominated over the full course of the game.

Lots of unforced errors early in the game and conceding looked the inevitability it was.

The substitutions improved the play, Hughsie was a real thorn in their side.

But against the top teams, chances are usually at a premium. Take one and you may get a hard earned point. Miss and you get nothing.

I do feel sorry for Glasner. Pre season was a farce and then we elected to sell two players that until that point were very much part of the squad.

If we don't win one of our next three games, sadly I think he will be gone.

Sadly the form at the end of the season looks like another false dawn.

It’s possible to draw parallels with the early period under Vieira when we pressed with real energy from the front with the charge led by Gallagher ably supported by a rejuvenated McArthur.
We achieved excellent results including an excellent and deserved 2-0 away win v Manchester City.

It didn’t prove sustainable with injuries and loss of form and we didn’t strengthen in the right areas and we fell away.

Now Glasner has a far better managerial track record than Viera , so I’m not making a comparison in this regard, but it’s more an observation that for whatever reason periods of promise for Palace fail to deliver anything other than promise.
We don’t seem able to get over that final hurdle to deliver anything other than potential.
I’m unsure how we crack it, because to do well we have to players excelling and when they excel then other clubs want to buy them.

It would be a start if our players put chances away. We have missed probably 10 or so clear cut chances already this season. Even 50% of those hitting the back of the net would see us comfortably mid table.

It wouldn't be a surprise to see us stuff someone 5 or 6 with everything clicking like castanets then revert to type. Watch out Forest.
