Labour Party politics

She made her career on pointing out Tory MP's on the make, well fair enough but commonsense says that if you are going to do that you ought to put your own house in order.

She has now said she did not knowingly avoid paying tax well that is not true. She set up a trust fund the reason people do that is to avoid paying tax.

She's a hypocrite of the first order.
From my understanding, the trust beneficiary is under 18 and selling a percentage to the trust makes no difference as the son is a minor. Whoever advised otherwise is not much of an expert.

The tax rules should be simplified so you pay stamp duty in all cases. (Not that I am in general support of all the taxes inflicted on us, it is like giving whisky to an alcoholic. Publics spending and many layers of government should be cut drastically too.)

Without pre-judging Rayner, it does have the whiff of something nasty. She probably hoped she’d get away with it by fudging what she disclosed to her conveyancing firm about the trust. I’d also be interested to hear how much she sold her interest in her Ashton/Stoke property to the trust to be able to buy such an expensive flat on the south coast. Was it at fair market value or did so over-egg the valuation knowing there was a million or two quid in NHS damages sitting there and it was a family transaction? Who knows… but something doesn’t add up here.

So if she is blaming the lawyers SHE appointed, even if you believe her lies, it makes you wonder how many other mistakes she is making on the country's behalf as deputy prime minister, and even worse, Secretary of State for Housing!!!!
Get shot. She is a total hypocrite and a liability to us all.

A very adept and damning summary. She consulted with a few advisors, before succumbing to the "Tax evasion" option.
We've probably all done cash-in-hand jobs when we were younger , or paid a builder in cash for a small job "to keep the petty cash tin full"
The trouble is, tax rule enforcement is harsh. Anyone here handed in their Tax Return 5 minutes past midnight ? You get an automatic fine.
Rayner's problem here, is it could potentially open a can of worms, if there is shown to be systematic abuse of the system over a period of time.
She must be concerned about losing her job, but also HMRC should be involved. Unfortunately, HMRC doesn't normally chase political figures.
And the reason the other MP's aren't clamouring for wholeheartedly for an investigation ? You can bet there's a whole load of them from all parties who've done exactly the same
The difference is Forest (correct me if I'm am wrong), but you are not in the Cabinet of the ruling party.

HMRC has little sympathy for normal people caught underpaying their tax by such a large amount. Ignorance is no justification in law.

She should be fined the going rate that any of us would have to pay. If she isn’t then that is another travesty of justice.

As for her argument that she took advice well she is free to sue whoever gave her that advice to recover any HMRC fines and costs and to report them to their official body for malpractice. I doubt she will because I suspect that she did not use a tax specialist or properly divulge her complex trust arrangements.

Agree on your last point in particular, she has exposure to stamp duty and capital gains I'd have thought

Labour ran at the electorate with a "holier than thou" ticket and then get caught up in hypocrisy after hypocrisy.
They believed that having a plan to win, is the same as secretly having no plan to govern.
They keep persisting that have achieved successes, when the publicly available evidence is the complete opposite.
The wheels have truly come off and I have no faith in Labour having the ability to rectify the situation.

The only reason the Tories haven't been totally damning, is because they are ALL at it.

I bet the whole HoC is scurrying back to one of their many homes to sort their tax affairs out before it all comes under very public (and HMRC) scrutiny

And AR got caught because she was careless in taking the pl55. No excuses, she has to go.
