That’s aged well (and I don’t mean Rayner 🤢)
The way to unlock wealth that say a pensioner is sitting on is to allow them to pass on their wealth to their children whilst they are alive. Now I don't mean a free for all but under specific terms. This is an interesting move by Keith Starlin.
Firstly, the following I assume is a direct comment: “the idea that you are successful because you are smart & hardworking is pernicious & wrong." I guess she’s thinking and suggesting everyone in this bracket in her mind had a privileged upbringing and education. Now some will have, and some will have relative to some others. But a lot will have had an average upbringing. And I’m assuming her view is that relative success means going after the above average in success terms more, which has been the tax trend in the UK already.
Secondly: She also proposed “the imposition of property taxes which would direct a flow of capital from those in high value properties to those unable to get on the property ladder, through a capital endowment scheme.”
I don’t know how this redistribution of wealth is going to work, but I do see the argument for it. I see it more as a redistribution of opportunity to live rather than redistribution of wealth. When you see and know of 1 or 2 elderly people in 5-6 bedroom homes and young people who cannot get on the property ladder because the average price of homes is 9 times the average wage, then you have to see something needs to be done for the future of the country. Why people ask? Well many don’t like mass immigration, but many young people can’t afford to produce the babies to earn the income to pay the taxes to run the country etc etc etc. More homes would help, but it won’t be enough.
Her proposal to ‘Make everyone pay inheritance tax by scrapping the nil-rate band’ I don’t agree with especially if it’s at the level you expect it to be.
Some of the other ones are very aggressive and others going after richer people in a big way…
When the f*** will Labour learn that normal people are not interested in their communist wokery? Including their own supporters - if they have any left. Is there any group they haven't alienated? It's like they pick these people up from lists of Guardian subscribers at University debate clubs. Hands off my pension is the first placard I can see here. Perhaps some simple logic for this one here: pensions are literally paid for by working. In order to be secure. Take people's pensions and you take people's security. They won't just sit there taking it from another ridiculous crusading activist. This is an interesting move by Keith Starlin.

Yes I forgot to add this point I agree with. There are people who view higher taxes as fair enough if they weren’t wasted. The way to unlock wealth that say a pensioner is sitting on is to allow them to pass on their wealth to their children whilst they are alive. Now I don't mean a free for all but under specific terms.
For example Grandad could pay the deposit on a mortgage direct to the building society. He could also pay off part or all of his grandson's student loan which would help the government. The benefit for Granddad is that not only does he help his kids he also reduces his IHT bill when he finally dies.
Taxing people to redistribute wealth never works it just goes into a black hole. Besides I don't trust the government with my money.
This X thread explains what’s happened with her property matters.
She hasn’t done anything illegal, but where the optics don’t look good, is that she’s saying her primary residence is in Ashton, after taking herself off the deeds with her ex husband. That’s because her kids live and go to school there. Therefore she only had to pay £30,000 stamp duty in Hove rather than having to pay £70,000 as it was going to be the only home she was about to own.
Which home is her primary residence doesn’t come into it when paying stamp duty on the Brighton flat. Only whether she owns another property which she didn’t when buying the flat in Brighton.
But this looks murky because her primary residence is Ashton with her ex husband without being on the deeds, while showing she doesn’t own any of that house, meaning she pays £40,000 less stamp duty.

Not a good enough reason or excuse. She didn’t do anything wrong but after all the reaction she now admits she should have paid more stamp duty. Now is that now avoidance or evasion? I’m not sure, but I bet she remains. They’re a joke.Oops...

I'll try it, sorry HMRC you caught me out but it was a mistake not tax evasion just like Angela. I'm sure they will be sympathetic. Not a good enough reason or excuse. Donors hedging their bets on Starmer. The hypocrisy with Angela Rayner really stinks with all her previous finger pointing at Tories and self employed people and I hope and want her gone out of the cabinet and deputy PM.
What will be funny if the unlikely happens is that she’ll have a new mortgage she’s going to have trouble affording as a back bench MP only lol, but then I wondered how she was offered the mortgage in the first place.

Complicated because she's there by the fact she was elected under Labour rules? The hypocrisy with Angela Rayner really stinks with all her previous finger pointing at Tories and self employed people and I hope and want her gone out of the cabinet and deputy PM.

I was always old Labour. I left with the suspicious death of John Smith. I've never voted Tory but I've also never voted Labour since Smith's death.Unrecognisable as a labour government.
