Ipswich v CPFC Match Thread

I agree about OG not changing now and again to a flat back four during games. I think it’s a must otherwise we will continue with more defeats and draws than wins. Even last night you could see massive gaps in the midfield where we only have 2 centrally and that allows opponents to attack easier passing between them. Last night Ipswich were not good enough to take advantage of that. Now and again we need to close shop by switching to a back 4 with a stronger middle 3 instead we bring on substitutes just to replace players with the same formation. Perhaps I’m wrong but that’s how I see it when watching our games?

Agree. Marc Guehi plays for England in a flat back 4 so it's not rocket science to work out that might be his best position (and of course he didn't play during our great end to the season due to injury).

Essentially Hughes, Lerma and Doucoure have zero creativity so without Wharton we need a bit more attacking flair.

A 4231 would suit the player we currently have IMHO. Then Eze (and maybe if injured Kamada!!) could play as a proper No 10. Not sure why i'm even bothering to type this as it won't happen.

An important win, without learning anything new.
We have a solid back 3, a competitive midfield (when fit) and a blunt attack.

Eze continues to receive the ball too deep and with his back to goal, and seems to run back towards his own goal most times that the ball is passed to him.
He is getting over an injury, but to get the best out of him surely he needs to in around the opposing penalty area and facing forwards.

Sarr needs space to run in behind for him to be effective.
Fine against Villa and Spurs , who defend with a high line, but problematic for him against teams that defend deep.

To win games we will need to continue to be mean defensively, as the current team is not a free scoring one.

As the SKY commentators said on several occasions, we were happy to let their keeper have the ball and only began a press when he played it out. This allowed the midfielders to stay around the half way line and reduced the space available to the opponents. We were much more compact and solid in both this and the Newcastle game.

But as Glasner said in the post-match. we are still able to create chances playing in this way.

Yep an interesting set up for sure. All the pre match chat was about their threat in behind, but not over pressing potentially removed that option. And effectively blunted their attack. Good set up from Glasner.

Its why I find it so laughable when people say 'should play a flat back 4' or 'we need 3 in the middle'. Like they have any clue what they are talking about or how to set up a team. This is a perfect example of it being less about the formation and more about tactically how they set up.

I think last night showed we are a much better team on the counter attack than we are when we need to break down a defence.
The first half, we had more possession, our shape was good, and they offered little going forward. most of the time, we didn;t have the opportunity to break with speed, as they struggled to push on. We had little imagination, and were static when trying to attack like this, but still managed to create the odd chance. Sarr is a problem in this situation, as he is much better running onto or turning past the defender into space.
The Second half Ipswich were much more progressive and while it may have looked like they were 'on top' but they were in actuality, playing to our strengths. They committed more players forward, allowing us space behind them to break into quickly. Sarr had a better half due to this - although his final ball/decision making is seriously lacking.

I thought we actually managed to game well. They never really worried our defence, except for the header at the end which hit the post. For once, we got the rub of the green. it would have been extremely harsh to lose the points at that moment.

Special praise for Mitchell. I Thought he had an excellent game.

Yep, nothing much learnt. But we've seen over the last couple of matches that we are able to pretty effectively limit the oppos attacking ability. So whilst not overly pretty, we need to grind out some points.

But playing Hughes and Lerma/CD is never going to give you a very attacking base to play from. Wharton will be massive for us.

I was frankly surprised to hear how much Ebs was criticised by our fans at Portman Road. The guy is clearly not yet fully fit and to me it seemed like he's playing a role he's been told to rather than his natural position. Of course I could be wrong but I'm amazed when I hear him being slagged off by our fans. Maybe those fans involved were p!ssed or coked up, or maybe they just didn't have anyone else to criticise while Kamada is banned.

FFS he's our best player.

Other than that it was a great evening and I was impressed by the welcome we got at the Railway Hotel... 👍

I don’t think it’s laughable but rather fans having different opinions. I mentioned in my post switching during a game to a flat 4 at the back allowing a middle 3. Doesn’t sound laughable to be just asking for flexibility rather than subs coming on and playing the exact same way when we look like we have tired legs and the middle of midfield looking more open for the opposition 🙂

In bygone days I knew of a gentleman who consumed copious amounts of 'Stingo' to the extent he could be filed under 'Addlepated' when several had made contact with his larynx.
I haven't touched barley wine since an 'unfortunate' self-inflicted event during my time in the Railway Tavern whilst at Croydon Tech!

Not sure why it's laughable to you. If you don't yet realise football is all about opinions then i pity you.

OG's lack of pressing the keeper had nothing to do with the formation and you can hold a high or deep back line regardless of a back 3, 4 or 5.

For me the main thing yesterday was Ipswich were a pretty average team. Regardless of set up or formation we should have won.

We will be playing better teams than Ipswich over the next 3 games. Let's see how our 2 immobile CMs get on in those games.

last night we created three clear chances including the one we scored from. Eze played the pass for two of them and made the run to get on the end of the other one. He’s not a player who needs critcising.
