Immigration

Aren't they actually different countries with their own devolved parliaments? Cornwall's overweening self regard notwithstanding it is still just a county.
Administratively Cornwall is currently still a county but the Cornish are a recognised national minority giving them the same status as the Scots and the Welsh.

So it’s possible to look at it both ways. Some of the Cornish regard themselves as British Cornish and certainly not English, preferring to support the other Celtic nations in sporting contests. People in England dismiss that of course.

It’s not taken too seriously. About as important as whether you put the jam or the cream on the top of a scone.

the greatest enemy of the Welsh & Scots ? that will be Edward II....hammer of the scots.

greatest enemy of the irish ? Oliver Cromwell ...the Lord Protector

greatest enemy of the Cornish ? Nigel the London stockbroker, Surfer, 4x4 driver, buyer of a holiday home....Auction-room-hammer of the cheap-housing protectors. Coming over here to rob our Pasties & cider.

That was Edward 1. Edward 11 was the unfortunate poker player.

Isn't this all wonderfully explained in Braveheart? Completely historically accurate I might add. Just lacking some Guinness, leprechauns and a ferry to Liverpool.
Braveheart the Official SNP movie according to Alex Salmond.

Historically inaccurate fiction, written and directed by an Australian and filmed in Ireland. So yeah fake Scotland, just like the SNP. 😀

I am just back from the hospital in Truro where I can assure you I saw many from “an ethnic background”. You won’t see them in the tourist spots. They are too busy working. I was in Truro on Saturday and was struck by how many people who appeared to have a South East Asian heritage were there. I assume, but don’t know, they work in the care sector and were on a day off. Living in Truro it’s very noticeable how the numbers of overseas workers we are now seeing here is increasing. No one has suggested it compares to some other places up country. Only that it’s changing.

You might be surprised at the number of high tech industries who are based here. Nobody just passes through Cornwall though. You come here for a reason. If that means we are a backwater I think we are all very happy about that.

Anti-tourist groups are unknown to me. If they exist then they keep pretty well hidden. There are many concerns about the number of second homes being bought by those from outside the county and only used for a few weeks each year. Whilst locally born youngsters cannot afford them. This is of particular concern in the coastal towns and villages and isn’t unique to Cornwall.

Enjoy your stay.
I have just spent 3 hours in Truro, visited the Cathedral and wandered around in the (nearly) sunshine. I saw 5 people who were obviously from an ethnic background and all shop workers seemed to be English. Even the Big Issue seller was English. Now many will be at work obviously but Truro certainly has a long way to go before it can be classed as ethnically diverse imo.
Given the nature of many food outlets, I would suggest Falmouth is more so but even then a lot of catching up to do

yes. I do stand corrected. The former was a bit Vinny Jones while the latter liked a rainbow soya latte and doddering about in a punt.

And on the subject of the successor of a violent scary bloke, Oliver Cromwell's son Richard was nicknamed 'Queen dick'.....and didnt last very long in office.

now , getting back to the OP. Immigration. Do i recall in 1939 the UK population being given a scare story about "oh, the country will be invaded by foreign men who will rob all your stuff and have all your women' ? And so a whole generation of British men stormed the beaches in Normandy. To protect the homeland.

I presume you reported those 5 to the Cornish authorities.

You'll be giving the MOD ideas. Every piece of kit will now need to be "small person" accessible. Tanks can be half the size - reducing costs - and transport costs will be halved.
Not sure what the brigade will be named. But the nickname will be scary.
The Gimli Grenadiers has a nice ring to it.........

That’s definitely untrue. Falmouth has more students, some of whom will work part time in food outlets, but Truro has a higher number of overseas workers simply because the Royal Cornwall Hospital is there. If you only saw 5 then you are selective in who you classify as being from an “ethnic” background. I know it’s February but there are visitors here off season, a high proportion being from overseas. I suppose “obviously” is your get out as many of them are from Europe or the USA and look like us.

Nobody would suggest that Truro is as ethnically diverse as some other places, but it has noticeably increased in recent years and is more ethnically diverse than many others, in Cornwall and elsewhere. There is a lot of the UK that isn’t inner city!
