Lets assume that Iran IS involved. What does it actually gain from it? In terms of an actual terror attack, then probably very little. They would be aware that there is very little public appetite within the UK, or much of the rest of the West for that matter, to get drawn into this all for a myriad of reasons. So why look to change that up?
But lets imagine that fancy they have a somebody leaking info from the inside? So you set up a few idiots in London. Spin them a story about schelping out to the shires where they can easily nick a bit of red diseal then drive it back down to the smoke where some dodgy types are ready to take it off their hands straight away. Even lay on the vans for them, complete with fake signage. Most crims are not that smart after all and if a couple of grand is dangled in front of their noses....
Then you allow this info to feed in the direction of the person you suspect of leaking information? All talk of a significant attack against a US airbase in the UK. Drip feed the details.
Worst case scenario for the Iranians being these bozo's drive up, attempt to nick a bit of fuel and so on. No actual harm done.
Best case scenario, we get all the drama on Sunday. The US and Brits laying on the full show, wall-to-wall media coverage as our brave secret squirrels come to the rescue, the politicians get to go all COBRA on us and so on...and its all a load of bollocks. Brits and Yanks playing the blame game with each other and those dopey bastards bailed before they know it. Everybody just scratching their heads in utter bewilderment.
And the Iranians now have the person leaking this s*** banged to rights.
A load of old bollocks? Probably. But is it any more far fetched than what is playing out?
