EZE

Eze plays left, Esse plays right. He won't replace him
Ultimately Eze can play anywhere behind the striker, in the OG formation he is played on the left, i don't think it's his natural position.

Esse is only 19 so he will need time to adjust. I suspect cameos from the bench will be his main contribution this season unless we can injuries.

Ultimately he has been bought to replace Olise on the right, however, all teams need an adaptable squad - Liverpool have 5 to play in the front 3 positions and often interchange.

Kamada and Eddie N should be our 5 but both have been massively disappointing.

I dont think the issue is Eze's defensive abilities. Everyone knows the cant defend, but we dont expect him to.

What is lacking is a desire to win, and impact games.

West Ham were basically playing 'pass it to Kudos' yesterday as he looked like he might do something every time he got the ball.

Be careful not to associate his lethargic style with a lack of desire. I think he has plenty of desire, and that doesn't come across in his playing style. It was the same with players like Berbatov, and Ozil.

You are right, though, we do not expect him to defend. but we do expect him to be involved in 'the press', cutting off supply lines and positioning himself and pressurising the oppo. It obviously doesn't come natural to him and is therefore something he needs to work on in Glasners system.

That’s one of the differences between Eze and Kamada. Kamada isn’t ever going to tackle like Hughes, although he is getting better, but he does watch players around him and positions himself to try to cut off supply lines. Eze never looks like he knows what to do when we’re out of possession. Probably why Kamada on for Eze when we’re ahead with 20-30 minutes to play is a sensible decision.

So far this season I have been massively disappointed with Eze. However, there are many reasons for our upturn in performances and results and he is one of them. Turns, flicks and assists now resulting in positive plays and goals.

we need him to continue to get better this season to take us to the next level!!

OR Eddie to start scoring goals at a good clip! I have more faith in Eze being able to be that man!

Just objectively untrue.

Agree with you. He used to track back a lot and was often found defending on the edge of our box where we used to look to give him the ball once he started running forwards again.

I don't understand the stick he gets sometime. The other players used to praise his workrate and how much he cared. Even the last game before he left he just hung back on the lap of appreciation whilst Luka and Macca, who were also leaving, got all the plaudits.

He’s well off the boil compared to last season, but he’s probably still the first name on the team sheet. Hard to place why, but he doesn’t look as hungry.

I don’t believe the formation is the issue as he played so well in the same system at the end of last season.

My guess is that it’s a combination of sulking at not getting a big move and perhaps he’s getting more attention from defenders since Sarr is less of a threat on the other wing.

I like to think the arrival is Esse will provide some competition and hopefully a player he links up well with.

Re Wilf, tracking back and “ drive “ are two separate things.

In all the many years of me watching Palace I can’t recall many, if any, with the same drive as Zaha.

Ebs is a totally different kind of player and personality. I don’t expect him to be a version of Wilf.

As I posted earlier, what I do expect of him, while not in peak form, is getting the basics right in terms of keeping possession.

For me Eze spends too much time with his back to goal. He frightens defences when he’s running at them but we haven’t seen enough of that this season.

Now is the blame for receiving the ball with back to goal poor distribution from the defence or central midfield, or is it because he’s going back looking for the ball, rather than looking to run into space.

He’s certainly not playing as well as he was, but still very important to us.

nothing wrong with eze in my opinion. He makes assists. Relaxed off the ball. Fast when he needs to be. Tricky to mark. He is a player you want on the team for a bit of magic. Not sure what folks expect from him as a CAM

It's more to do with what the manager expects of him. If the other front players are instructed to press I can't see how Eze can be omitted from that instruction, rather than stroll round looking for the pockets on his Christian Benteke Pocketed Shorts™.

You think OG prefers another fast moving centre mid? Personally I quite free like having both style on the right and left but agree it appears a little disjointed. But it would be limiting for tactics without Eze’s style.
