EZE

Why is it the 100% effort players never get slagged off for there lack of ability.

Because as fans I think most can except a lack of ability(within reason) but 100% effort is a minimum we expect, especially given the money they earn now.
One of my all time favourite players is Clint Hill, obviously not because he’s one of our best ever, but because he would sweat blood and go to war for the shirt if necessary, everyone loves a warrior who gets stuck in and works their socks off

I think most would agree that Eze is our most naturally talented player, capable of moments that few in the Premier League are capable of.

However, if you were objectively to seek a player to fit the role in Glasner’s system then Eze probably wouldn’t be a candidate.

The role requires high pressing of opposing defences , getting close and forming tight links with the other 2 of the front 3, and playing first time quick passes to catch defences off guard before they can organise.
Eze likes to drift, to meander, to glide over the field in his effortless style and adorn matches with moments of brilliance.
He rarely plays first time passes, having to take 4 or 5 touches and turning 2 circles before deciding upon a course of action or getting fouled.

Nothing wrong with this at all, but does it suit Glasner’s system?

It worked for a brief period at the end of last season when we had better players and the whole team was on song, but realistically how often do these optimum conditions apply?
Glasner himself acknowledged himself that Palace fans should not see that period of incredible results and performances as being the norm.
More often it’s a grind over the course of a season.

if there is one defining quality Eze lacks imho it is this: URGENCY. We don't want all workrate and no flair but when he first came to us he was appalling off the ball, jogging from position to position like he was in a playground, no darts, twists or change of pace to block channels and find spaces to make runs, it's why Vieira wouldn't play him. The poster who said he he needs to grow up was spot on, Hughes, Lerma, Munoz and Mateta play like men, Eze plays like a boy - nobody wants him to dilute his flair with graft, just get his bloody finger out a bit more.

Eze must frustrate Glasner so much. He has such talent but there is something lacking. Ollie has improved so many players in this team but so far not Eze. He’s never going to tackle like Hughes or indeed put in that sort of shift but he should be able to find space, and he should know when to pass and execute it. Most of the time he receives the ball with his back to goal and closely marked, with teams doubling up on him. You could argue that gives other players space but I’d like to see him show the close control and skill he had last season to break free with the ball rather than run up blind alleys or come short and pass back. His biggest asset currently is his ability on set pieces. That might be enough to keep him in our team like Ward-Prowse at Southampton but it won’t get him a move to a bigger club. I’m hoping that when Esse signs this might take some of the pressure off him and we might see the Eze we had last season.

It also doesn't help him that any midfield combination we put out carries virtually zero goal threat. Munoz got a couple and can get into good positions but apart from him there isn't a lot so defences are more able to double up on Eze.

I’ll say again that while Eze has definitely not played to his potential this season he is our leading player in terms of assists in the EPL. So he has been one of most effective attacking players. I know stats aren’t everything but it shows we need him in this squad. For me it is right to say he can and should offer more but also that calls to drop him etc are very wide of the mark as we would be a less effective team without him even playing the way he is.
