Everton vs. Crystal Palace match thread

Interesting stat: Since Wolves got promoted and they sold their two best players this summer, only Palace and Brighton have a lower net transfer spend. I can't understand why we got Kamada on high wages, other than he was on a free; we would have been much better off trusting Ozoh and giving him the game time, with Hughes or Lerma or Doucoure, to partner Wharton.
Ozoh isnt good enough yet and he hasnt won a European trophy. Kamada will come good, his deal costs £10m over a 2 year contract, his value on Transfermarket is £18m.

Looking at the fixture list pre season, I thought we’d have 16 points after 6 games. We couldn’t have asked for an easier start, avoiding the big 4. Wtf is going to happen when the fixtures start getting difficult, like next week?

Transfermkt valuation doesn’t really mean anything though. Eye test over 6 games proves Kamada isn’t worth £18k let alone £18m.

His stats from lazio showed he was a player in sharp decline and we have been silly enough to throw a load of money at him. Max Meyer 2.0

I still think there’s a good player in Kamada. What I don’t understand is why Glasner is playing him in a midfield two? The best I have seen him play so far is in the nketia position on the right of the front 3. We seem to have screwed up by buying players for positions where we don’t need replacements and then playing them out of position? We need a couple of players for each position granted but then to play them together doesn’t make sense? I genuinely thought Glasner was the manager for us at last but now I’m having serious doubts :-(

As its been pointed out before. You either have the team built to fit the system, or you adapt the system to fit the players, or you buy young talent and play the long game waiting for them to suit the preferred system.

We are a half way house on all of these fronts. At the moment I'd say we have to tweak the system.

We have two good forwards, who haven't played as a pair/partnership, why not let them try for a while.

We have a player in Eze crying out to be a proper No.10 just behind the front two, he will find more space there and be more influential.

We have one AWB and one FB who cant really play AWB so as there is no other option, play a back four and adopt a proper DM with two CM's. This should make us more compact.

Sorry, but take a look at the table. How many teams got 16 after 6? That’s like going to a restaurant, ordering mussels and expecting to pay the bill with the pearl you find in one of them.

Why play Kamada as CM? Eddie as a right sided attacker? We have actual players sitting on the bench for these positions. What yesterday tells me is OG wants Kamada in the team, even if it means shoe horning him in. Have the balls to drop Eze and play him there and show us what you see. Ffs put Sarr on the right and make a choice between Eddie or JPM.

January, we will desperately need additional full backs and if Sarr is not going to play then we need an attacking right winger (which Sarr may well be but clearly OG does not fancy him there). Oh yeah I would absolutely cash Kamada in already he is not going to work, we can all see that.

If not then as Roger’s suggested a formation change is required at which I would suggest…

4,3, 1, 2

Hendo
Clyne, MG, ML, Mitch
Munoz, Wharton, hughes (lerma)
Eze
Eddie, JPM (Sarr)

Worth a go, may give life to Eze because he is currently doing nothing.

Either this or we stick to the plan and don’t keep changing things. We actually have cover in all positions except left back/wing back.

I’m still really pissed at yesterday.

So are you happy with 3 points with that fixture list behind us?
No, not at all!!! But there is something between 3 and 16 out of 6. We have a poor start, no question. But nobody could realistically expect that the run at the end of last season, which was achieved under favourable conditions, might continue endlessly. Better days will come, still some time left this season till the fat lady sings.

Mitchell is a major problem when attacking, can't beat a man. Gets in good positions down that left hand side and then turns back because he hasn't got the skill to beat his man and get a cross in. This then slows everything down and the attack petters out.
I would suggest Eza (a fan’s favourite) is just as bad as that in slowing things down and allowing opponents to regroup. At least Mitchell bombs down the left side

I don’t blame Mitchell exclusively, I think the kid is ok. What troubles me is Eze, when Mitchell gets forward, never pushes himself far left the way Olise did on the right with Munoz. So now we have no real threat and we end up cutting inside and running into trouble and our attacks are muted. Eze then try’s to beat every man including the subs on the bench and loses the ball.

Eze is most effective when we play fast. Which we are just not doing. Amazing talent but not doing the basics and trying to do too many amazing things and doing none.

He goes out wide, past Mitchell, then can come in, possibly getting a penalty or crossing, delivering for JPM/eddie or cutting back to Wharton/hughes or god forbid Kamada.

It’s really not hard this game.

This is our entire problem. No wide players. If we have none, then we need to use a system that doesn't rely on them.

This is the formation I would go to. Probably not quite the players you've picked but the general idea, yes.

But he does, often put in decent crosses.

TM isn't the issue here.

Eze has been sub standard all season, JMP is poor with little service, Kamada shouldn't be playing CM, and Nketiah isnt a winger.

In the first half we had some very good spells of play when we were starting to tick as a team. Sharp quick penetrating passes etc. But they were short lived. If Glasner can build on these, then maybe there is something there.
But you cannot ignore the many comments on here re players playing out of position, Kamada and his shortcomings, Mateta/Nketia/Sarr, setting Eze alight again etc etc. Fans rarely get these things wrong.
Overall I didn't think our players looked happy.
The question is can we put it right?

I guess we have to hope that OG is having his usual slow start to a season. Some of the things he does defy logic but then the best coaches often see things in a player that others don’t. Having said that a blind man could see that Kamada isn’t a DM and against a physical Everton side he would struggle. Lerma in there with Chalobah in the back 3 would have been better. Kamada could have come off the bench for Eze who was having a poor game.
It’s also true that Glasner, like Kamada, has no EPL experience and both will take time to appreciate the pace and physicality of the game here. I wouldn’t write either of them off just yet.

Final thought. All the pundits agree we should have had a penalty. 2-0 at half time and the story could have been very different. The ref was the classic homer and VAR didn’t do their job.
