Everton vs. Crystal Palace match thread

If OG doesn’t sort things this week we will get handed our arses next weekend.

If Kamada starts again against Liverpool in favour of Lerma and hughes then honestly I can’t see fans backing him and then it’s all going to start again, the griping and moaning (rightly so). I cannot believe we will be hoping there are 3 worse teams again… especially when we have played 3 of them. 2 loses and a draw. (I refer to wet spam, Everton and Leicester). I thought we would be head and shoulders beyond them. Thought we would be in the upper mixed of Fulham, villa, Bournemouth, Brentford and the weed.

But hey what the f*** do I know.

Still pissed about yesterday.

Fingers crossed that it's one of those seasons where we beat all the good sides but are mediocre against poor sides. Staying up plus a cup run or even two, wouldn't be too bad.
Obviously, our whole mood will change if we beat Liverpool. And we'd have to be relatively ok with a draw.

I worry Nketiah is going to be of those hit and hope wasteful strikers like Benteke even when we play him correctly. His goal rate on shots is truly dreadful and having watched him invthe past he's world class at finding the keeper.

Don't these players aim it???? Quite incredible how they worm their way to these levels.
I never really wanted him, I was hoping that he would goto Forest. Perhaps they knew the cost of getting him was taking the p**s.

Plus the fact he never really wanted to come here in the 1st place. Just the fact that Arsenal must have told him he is not wanted and no one else would pay the money.

Even though it was much more risk, Smith Rowe should have been our big outlay during the summer.

I wonder if we thought Nketiah or Kamada could do a job out wide? It's not looking like it currently.

My take on the game was the first half we were in control scored a goal and Everton hardly had a kick. During this period Wharton i thought played very well and his first time passes were finding our players. We defended the set pieces well and looked a threat from our own. If the game had ended then everyone would be happy - 3 points and a clean sheet.
Second half, as will be the case at times in nearly all games, the opposition came at us and put us under pressure. You have to be able to manage this and in this one we did not. The first goal was poor and i thought Eze was as much to blame as Kamada in giving the ball away. The real problem though was our inability to create anything worth while after going behind. There was plenty of time in the game to do so and we had not chased the game and used up all our energy. We look over reliant on Eze who more often than not had 2 or 3 players on him - similar to when Wilf was at his prime. This should free up someone else if we move the ball quickly but this did not seem to happen. Wharton or and Kamada can do this but it was not happening in the second half. I still have not seen anything from Nketiah to get exicited about and Saar looks like he struggles to impact games. Mitchell has crossing opportunities but was generally poor in possession.
I think there is a case for dropping one of the 3 central defenders and getting an extra body in midfield.

I agree, was thinking about it and we pretty much have to go 4-3-2-1 or 4-3-1-2. The back three is seeing us overrun in midfield and meaning we have no flexibility when we need to change games. If we stick to the back three and lose the next few games, we may as well ring Roy. He never changed either.
It would also, quite obviously, suit our current squad better.

If he wants to play Nketiah and Mateta together then you either have to play 4-4-2 or 4-3-3. Either way you get the fullbacks defending with the occasional foray forward, Sarr right attacking mid, Eze left attacking mid, Lerma and Wharton in the middle. Lacroix and Guehi at CH.

Just an idea as a 4-4-2 set up.

It shows how much more flexibility we could get with four at the back.

I can see an appeal in this approach.

Sarr and Munoz would provide a lot of pace and thrust down the right and the attention of the opposing full back on Sarr may leave more space for Munoz.
We may be slightly exposed defensively down our right, but at the moment we look exposed and vulnerable to counter attacks with 3 at the back anyway.

We wouldn’t have as much thrust down our left as Eze tends to cut in and Mitchell looks uncomfortable further forward.
But that’s no different to the current set up.

Wharton is adept at sliding through balls where there are gaps but needs more targets.
With the proposed set up he could aim for Mateta, Nketiah, Sarr, Munoz and potentially Eze.

With 60% of possession, we should have scored two goals at least. A clue to the causes of this shortcoming might be that while Eze had 5 shots and Nketiah and Munoz 2 apiece, Mateta had none. That wasn't his fault entirely; service would help. We lack patience and ingenuity in the final third - which I think focus on getting the ball to JPM might help - and the wing backs get little support.

The injury blight at the back doesn't help and we probably have to accept there will be goals such as their second which shouldn't have happened while it persists. I would rather we had played Clyne and let Lerma play in his best position. While playing two attacking central midfielders seemed to have worked out in the first half, it got found out when Everton started to play. Even in the first half Wharton might have contributed more with the reassurance that Lerma was behind him.

I did wonder what had gone on in our dressing room at half time. A look back up this thread to helf time comments shows we expected Everton's dramatic improvement on the resumption. If the players had been warned to expect it and advised on counter-measures, it didn't show.

Was watching Ref watch this morning , Dermot Gallagher said it was a penalty and a red card for Tarkowski, in his opinion. 😒😒

What I don’t get is that anywhere else on the pitch it’s a dangerous tackle and a yellow card minimum as he went straight through him from behind and it’s irrelevant whether he touches the ball.

Plain and simple the ref bottled it and var should have intervened but didn’t.

Although we haven’t deserved a great deal we have had very little go our way this season. A 2-0 lead in this match would probably have resulted in an Everton capitulation and an easy win for us. Small margins and all that.

VAR seams to be getting worse. And as you said, pen, 2-0 up and we probably win that game.

I still cant get over the Vicario one a couple of weeks ago (handball at least twice outside the area). How some of these are not spotted is insane.

I can't see him changing until he has given what should be our strongest combination of Guehi, Lacroix and Chalobah a run at the back. The team needs a settled defence. But it also needs Lerma alongside Wharton

Looking at the fixture list pre season, I thought we’d have 16 points after 6 games. We couldn’t have asked for an easier start, avoiding the big 4. Wtf is going to happen when the fixtures start getting difficult, like next week?

You clearly needed to get the end of last season out of your head then, because we obviously wasn’t going to start that well. Everything clicked into place, a perfect storm you might say of us on a high with two great signings, a new manager and top players back from injury coinciding with us playing teams who were running on empty after long European seasons with domestic cup runs as well, some who clearly couldn’t wait for the season to end
You say what’s going to happen when the fixtures get harder? Well we might lose a few more games, but it’s a long season and I’ve slipped into that trap of not knowing where the next win is coming many a time since we’ve been promoted, but you know what we can be like, we’re capable of beating anyone on our day and a couple of wins and all will be well in the palace world again

Gallagher normally sits on the fence so for him to say that it had to be blatantly obvious. Unfortunately Goodison is an intimidating place for players and officials and the ref bottled it, realising he couldn’t give a pen without sending the player off.
