El Hadji Diouf

Just out of interest, for all of you that say 'just pay the money'

What are we talking here, would you go to £18m, £20m, £25m?
If clickbait is correct on numbers, Slavia P want £20m. We offered £13m which apparently was turned down.
I would go back at £14m plus £1m of top ups based on performance.
We may have already done this.
The problem we have is very dubious information feed.

Good idea, then watch someone else buy him

That is the risk yes.
But nobody knows as there is no club info feed understandably.

Where I am coming from is we need to agree a deal very soon for an LWB and a central defender based on yesterday injury news. Without reinforcements we will be going into the rest of the season very thin on cover.

If we are unsuccessful Lanzo, Glasner may just have to heed your advise and go for a back four.
Why ?

I understand the interest in a specialist LWB, but the injuries to Riad and Doucoure could mean attention is now focused elsewhere on covering those positions.

So that would mean Mitchell continues as he’s been all season. What would be the rationale for changing now given Glasners preferred set up ?

...or whatever it takes?

Buying players with no PL experience is a risk. Big money has been paid and left clubs with egg on their face.

Clubs like:
  • Arsenal (Pepe)
  • Man U (Anthony + lots)
  • Chelsea (Mudryk etc.)
can afford to let that happen. Clubs like Palace can't afford to make such mistakes too often.

I trust DF and SP to know where to set the limit for each player they're willing to take a risk on.
And yet we took the plunge with Eddie and Kamada

Failure to secure the necessary cover.
Besides, if we are going to continue with 3 at the back, apparently LWB is an area Glasner is looking to upgrade which makes sense if we can secure a new player in time.

I think “in time” is the issue now…knowing how long it takes us to do anything!

Both of these were a 'safer' bet, Nketiah has scored goals in the prem, and Kamada is an experienced international and has played in top leagues. And we may well end up with egg on our face with these 2.

It very easy for people to sit and say 'just pay whatever it takes', 'typical Parish' etc with no understanding of the finances or the trade offs.

De we need to hold a little money back for a CB loan? Tie JMP into a longer deal? Pay Franca's medical bill?!

If the news of the latest rejected bid is true, it's essentially matched the highest ever sale from that league.

Sorry but I don’t understand your thinking.

Failure to supply the necessary cover ? For whom ? We now need cover at CB - we haven’t had cover for Mitchell all season whether we play 3 at that back or 4 .

I’m aware of the bid for a LWB and of course that should mean continuing with Glasners preferred set up.

We now need cover at CB and cover\ replacement for Mitchell. If he goes down now, who covers?
If we dont get cover for our back three (since Riad injury and Chalobah going back) well then maybe we will have to revert to back four in the event of further injury to any of the three (eg Richards Lacroix and Guehi). Either way we need an extra LWB/LB and have done for some time.
Hope this helps you understand my thinking.
But, hey dont get too wound up, Im just a fan giving my thoughts. Im not part of the decision making!

Thanks, I was just interested to know what you thought would prompt a change to a back four.

Kamada I can understand. Glasner knew him, he had a reasonable career and the hope was he could fill a need. And ,at worst his total cost was 11 million. Nketiah on the other hand was a known limited commodity who was only ever going to be a backup unless Mateta left. And he is on the books for 50 million

From the limited viewing I have seen, Diouf looks good. He's a big lad so might also serve in a back 3 with the ability to advance with the ball and pass well

My point was there are absolutely no guarantees any player will be a success or a failure. 2 years ago, Mateta looked like Bambi on ice, looked a total waste of space. Now he is one of the first names on the team sheet. Eze was the first name on a team sheet, now he may be in contention to be dropped. Bottom line, if the powers that be think Diouf is ready and able to slot into a position we all know we need cover or options for then going to say £25 million does not seem too bad. If they don’t think he is worth cutting out the messing about like it’s a flea market in Morocco then just leave well alone and move on.

None of us know the ins and outs but it does appear we haggle all the time instead of just getting in and doing our business so the manager can crack on.

Well it does if we've only got £25m to spend, he's valued at £15m and we now need to find some CM cover. (for example)

And yes, or course there is no guarantees, which is why its prudent not to over spend.
