Edouard

Whilst this thread is about Edouard, quite a lot of angst seems pointed at Eddy Nketiah, with most of that suggesting that we paid way too much for him -

One suggests: A super sub, below 10 million would have been appropriate.

I would be interested to know what others think would have been a reasonable / acceptable price to pay, for Nketiah, in a competitive market, bearing in mind what it costs these days to buy a 23 year old striker, from a top 6 club with any number of PL minutes & some goals to their name.

Its not unusual in the current market to see PL clubs spending 15 million for squad players / benchwarmers

V sensible. 10m in striker terms doesn't get you much. In Nketiah, it was a young striker who has shown he could score when given the opportunity.

The difficulty with signing a young player from a bigger club, is the expectations (probably by most parties) that if he's nearly good enough for Arsenal (and always scored when called upon) then he'll automatically be one of of our best players.

Hence high wage and high fee.

But sign a player from the championship, the assumption is that its going to take him some time to get up to speed etc.

Last season Nketiah scored 6 goals in 38 games for Arsenal and 3 of those was against a struggling Sheff Utd team. The previous season he never scored in his last 14 games for the club.
I will accept that Nketiah, not being a regular, in the main only made appearances from the bench.

And it's safe to assume he had more chances to score for them. Still, as has been pointed out, anyone capable of putting away his header like he did must have something about him.

*** Arsenal looking to sign Odsonne Edouard as an emergency striker in shock new development following the breaking news that Gabriel Jesus will miss the rest of the season with a serious ACL injury ***

The 26 year old Crystal Palace forward is set to revive his goal scoring exploits from North of the border by signing a 3 year deal at Arsenal with the fee rumoured to be ITRO £40M. Arsenal are looking to get the deal done before the weekend, with Palace set to terminate Edouard’s loan deal at Leicester and the higher than expected fee reflects the fact that the player has only recently signed a new contract extension at the South London club which runs until June 2027. Arsenal are confident that with their high ‘Expected Goals’ rate and ‘Chances Created’ statistic that he can return to the form that saw him net 29 goals in his final season at Celtic.

Might have fooled people who didn't realize a player can't play for three clubs in the same season

We should have put the rumour out that we're interested. That'll get them jumping the gun to sign him. They might be in such a panic to get him before we do that they dont realise who it is they are buying him from! 😉
