Doncaster Rovers v Crystal Palace Match Thread

Tonight showed how we miss Eze, someone for all his faults capable of holding the ball. When he's back in partnership with Wharton we can start looking hopeful of a minimum 10th place finish.
Our home form needs to improve and Everton will be a big test on Saturday, as will Millwall in the 5th round.

We are now building a solid strong squad.
Good to see Wharton back for over an hour. He really is a very classy player. Nearly all his passes are superb.
Chilwell showed us after ten minutes on the pitch what a class act he is. Some of his positioning and passing were what the left side of the pitch has been missing. He is a proper LWB who likes coming forward. Once Chilwell, Eze, Guehi, then Kamada, Devenny, Wharton, Hughes, Lerma start linking together we are going to be awesome.
Quite a few comments about Kamada tonight. He is shaping up to be good cover for Eze. When Eze is back Kamada will be benched. Mitchell will be good cover for Chilwell, albeit in a defensive role. He has had his chance to play LWB but he has struggled. Chilwell gave some glimpses tonight why he was an established international. Im sure after a couple more outings he will be there.
Great seeing Esse and then Franca back in the action, but both will continue to understudy Sarr when he is back. But they both showed good energy.
Very pleased to see Devenny take his second chance so well. Really good goal that got him off the hook for his miss of the match five minutes earlier.
All in all a good night on a lousy night (weather).
Glasner must be very happy with our progress.

I'm starting to think there was more than one game being played tonight.
The one I watched had some solid if somewhat last ditch defending, Guehi/Lacroix immense. Richards was a wall, but passed the ball to the opposition soooo many times. Wharton showed some good touches, but gave the ball away a few times - to be expected after so long out. Mateta didn't have his best game, hold up Play was poor, but still managed a threat here and there. Kamada looked pretty good; showed good energy high up the pitch breaking up play, but too often held the ball when the right pass would have unlocked the defence. Hughes was the best player on the pitch by a country mile.

good to see Chillwell get some minutes. he has a more multi-faceted game than mitchell, but looked like he was playing in a different team. this will improve. Esse was lively, kporha too. and great to see Franca get a run out.

all in all a job well done. we're really playing like a Team, which is nice to see. but we reallty lack a 2nd striking option. Mateta looked like he needs a rest by the end.

Yes, apart from the fact that he quickly saw that Mateta was unmarked, played the ball quickly and thus initiated the 1:0, which calmed the game down, he did little.🙄
Fair point hold my hands up to your correct comment. But I still don't think he is good enough, just seems lost at time running around not doinģ much imo

I'd watch the game again then
No need I've watched very game Kamada has played and I still think he is not good enough. But I would love for him to prove me wrong as it has been reported he is paid over £100,00 a week. If the figure is true then he should start earning it IMO. I feel there are better players them him earning less

Every time I noticed Kamada he either ran into trouble and was easily eased off the ball or he was hanging onto the ball rather than playing the quick pass forward that would have released a player making a run behind.

Yes, the free kick that led to Munoz's goal was well played by him but overall, I thought Devenny, despite his glaring miss, was more effective in the No 10 role, especially in the first half.

It's all about opinions and we fans see different things depending what we're looking at.

Hughes MOTM, I thought he was comfortably the best player on the pitch. He and Wharton back together will take us up levels. We need Eze and/or Sarr back for the Everton game .

I thought it was a boring game, but we got the result we needed and also importantly Chillwell, Kporha, Esse and Franca got minutes.

I saw a video at the end of the game where a coach says something to Lacroix and he runs up to Franca to push him in front of our fans. Wharton and a few others are smiling. Lovely to see and shows the team cohesion they are working on. Kporha looked very quick and impressive, I have to say I previously thought he was a bit slow but perhaps working on his fitness even if it was only a short cameo

We all want Kamada to be a success but had tonights performance been against Premier League opposition it would be a bit more meaningful. Unfortunately for him a few good touches against Doncaster might help his confidence a bit but won't otherwise convince anyone.
Based on what we've seen how many other PL teams would he be getting in?

I agree with you. Overall, he's a disappointment, no question. But I don't think he was too bad today. Regarding his salary and his performance for the club: I could tell dozens of similar stories from the company where I worked for decades. Unfortunately, that's just the way it is. But anyway, we're through to the next round, COYP.

Maybe I'm being a bit harsh but what does Kamada offer the team. He seems to have no idea how to play in premiership side and just runs around doing very little. Watching him tonight he did not make a single challenge or any sort of tackle. Offered very little going forward. About as much use as an ashtray on a motor bike
On a positve note great to see Franca on the pitch think he will be a good asset if he can stay fit
TBF, it was his free kick that led to the goal, but otherwise I'd have to agree with you. His much less experienced counterpart on the right, Devenney, got into good goal scoring positions on three occasions; with the pass from Munoz where his shot was blocked for a corner; the complete fluff from Mateta's pass; and the goal,

Not a perfect performance by any means but we move on and that is the important thing. Hughes MotM for me, was exceptional. Same for Devenny. Turner did what he had to do when called upon.

As for Kamada, I think people do not realize the subtle things that he does that makes the game tick. Perfect pass to help the opening goal and other parts of it also.

He will be just fine.

As we were lining up for the free kick that led to our first goal, one of the announcers on the U.S. feed said, "They're planning something for Mateta, straight from the training ground. Normally he would be a target on the far post, but watch him – they're setting up something for him."

And in a flash, Kamada placed the ball perfectly to JPM, who pivoted, struck, and beat the keeper – to the post. Good for Muñoz to pounce. The lead announcer gave credit to his broadcast mate, who saw exactly what we were planning to do. Indeed, the replay from behind the goal showed two of our players flanking Mateta (Guehi and Devenny) muscling their defenders wide, to create a slot for Mateta to have a clean shot.

Two points:
1) The simplest of plays, but the execution was superb. Mateta should have scored.
2) On the training ground, surely Glasner made the call for Kamada to initiate the play, and he delivered. It was a well-struck low pass, perfectly timed (in relation to our players creating space for JPM) and perfectly placed. Even though I share others' frustration with Kamada, Glasner knows DK has the technical ability to create sharp chances for teammates.

I wish we had the cojones to put analysts like that on our commentary teams. All we seem to get is DEI hires !

A good, solid performance last night, very professional. We controlled the game and were never seriously threatened. At no point did we look like losing. Hughes was excellent and ran the game from minefield. We kept possession well and you can see the difference Wharton makes collecting the ball from the back three and moving it quickly. So good to see him back. Kamada was neat in possession and broke their play up well a few times. Felt like we won while being able to coast for the last 20 minutes. Only concern for me is Richards’ passing.

Best thing was seeing Chilwell settle, Wharton get some minutes in and Franca on the pitch. Although only on for a few minutes Franca looked keen and sharp. Fingers crossed he stays fit as he could be a good option from the bench.

I was surprised that we gave up the chances we did ( possibly more than in a Premier League game).
Fortunately their efforts were largely powder puff.
Hughes had another good game and Devenny showed a few nice touches, but I don't think much was learnt.
Job done and no complaints.

Doncaster couldn’t get near the ball for most of the game. If the pitch had been better we’d have won comfortably.

The midfield pairing from here on in will be / has to be Hughes and Wharton. Mateta picks himself. Neither Eze or Kamada have particularly impressed this season, which leaves OG with an interesting dilemma. Chilwell is only here for a few months, unless of course he becomes available and the club splashes out. I wouldn't get too excited about him.
Millwall will probably turn out to be a sterner test.
