Doncaster Rovers v Crystal Palace Match Thread

Doncaster couldn’t get near the ball for most of the game. If the pitch had been better we’d have won comfortably.
They had 15 shots to our 11, 4 on target to our 5.
I'm not suggesting we didn't win comfortably, but I was surprised by the space their attackers were given to get their shots away.
Fortunately their shots lacked power and Turner fielded them comfortably.

According to the idiot commentator Doncaster made it an uncomfortable evening for Palace, I disagree.

It's a cup tie, you expect the home team to up their game for the fans and give it their all. Well apart from a couple of good chances Palace were in control for pretty much the whole game, Doncaster’s best play was when they were 2 down and Palace were just trying to see the game out.

The midfield pairing from here on in will be / has to be Hughes and Wharton. Mateta picks himself. Neither Eze or Kamada have particularly impressed this season, which leaves OG with an interesting dilemma. Chilwell is only here for a few months, unless of course he becomes available and the club splashes out. I wouldn't get too excited about him.
Millwall will probably turn out to be a sterner test.
What is the dilemma OG has? Kamada doesn’t start in our best eleven, Eze does. Eze not at his best but still has more assists than anyone else and in the top ten in the EPL for chances created. So he’s been more effective than anyone else in his position.

As we were lining up for the free kick that led to our first goal, one of the announcers on the U.S. feed said, "They're planning something for Mateta, straight from the training ground. Normally he would be a target on the far post, but watch him – they're setting up something for him."

And in a flash, Kamada placed the ball perfectly to JPM, who pivoted, struck, and beat the keeper – to the post. Good for Muñoz to pounce. The lead announcer gave credit to his broadcast mate, who saw exactly what we were planning to do. Indeed, the replay from behind the goal showed two of our players flanking Mateta (Guehi and Devenny) muscling their defenders wide, to create a slot for Mateta to have a clean shot.

Two points:
1) The simplest of plays, but the execution was superb. Mateta should have scored.
2) On the training ground, surely Glasner made the call for Kamada to initiate the play, and he delivered. It was a well-struck low pass, perfectly timed (in relation to our players creating space for JPM) and perfectly placed. Even though I share others' frustration with Kamada, Glasner knows DK has the technical ability to create sharp chances for teammates.
Being able to kick a straight 10 yard pass is hardly a symbol of technical ability. Most would say you shouldn’t be in Doncaster’s side let alone Palace if you are not able to do it.

It was a decent training ground move however Mateta would not have had that space to turn in a PL match so it was probably created specifically for this game.

Kamada is just a bang average player. He’s not a goal scorer, he doesn’t take players on, he plays backwards more than he looks to play forwards, he doesn’t tackle well. His strengths are also his weaknesses in that he just does stuff ok, nothing fantastic, just ok. He is an expensive back up to Eze and shouldn’t ever be in our starting first 11.

TBF, it was his free kick that led to the goal, but otherwise I'd have to agree with you. His much less experienced counterpart on the right, Devenney, got into good goal scoring positions on three occasions; with the pass from Munoz where his shot was blocked for a corner; the complete fluff from Mateta's pass; and the goal,
In fairness Kamada was coming back more than Devenny looking for the ball. Devenny played more forward than Kamada and missed a sitter. Neither of them played that well but as a team we got a result against a side that battled for the whole match

It's an interesting one isn't it? Eze, below par this season, and as it turns out, struggling with injury (as has previously been suggested for his drop in form), against Kamada, headless chicken who at least shows good fitness (and is OG's own pick) - there's the dilemma.

If Eze isn’t fit to play Kamada may well play. If Eze is fit he gets in the first eleven. That’s been the pattern since October

Going off on a slight tangent, the way I understand you can only have two players on loan but Doncaster had three loan players in their match day squad, albeit only two on the pitch at the same time. Have I missed something?
the 2 limit is a premier league rule.

In the EFL i think they can have up to 6 (or possibly 5). Look at Sheff Utd - they now have 2 from us alone and i think Holding takes them to 7, so only 6 can be included in a matchday squad.

He shouldn't be coming back looking for the ball in this game. Hughes and Wharton had plenty of possession. He needed to be making the runs Devenney did.
Not that it ever happens, but in a fully fit team he would be a fifth choice DCM, 3rd choice L No 10 (behind Eze and Devenney) and 3rd choice R No 10 (behind Sarr and Esse)

I'm starting to think there was more than one game being played tonight.
The one I watched had some solid if somewhat last ditch defending, Guehi/Lacroix immense. Richards was a wall, but passed the ball to the opposition soooo many times. Wharton showed some good touches, but gave the ball away a few times - to be expected after so long out. Mateta didn't have his best game, hold up Play was poor, but still managed a threat here and there. Kamada looked pretty good; showed good energy high up the pitch breaking up play, but too often held the ball when the right pass would have unlocked the defence. Hughes was the best player on the pitch by a country mile.

good to see Chillwell get some minutes. he has a more multi-faceted game than mitchell, but looked like he was playing in a different team. this will improve. Esse was lively, kporha too. and great to see Franca get a run out.

all in all a job well done. we're really playing like a Team, which is nice to see. but we reallty lack a 2nd striking option. Mateta looked like he needs a rest by the end.
Good summary of the match I watched. Hughes in command. Solid at the back. Wharton starting to look like the old Wharton. Not sure about Turner. Not great with the ball at his feet. Chilwell toile the first half to find his feet but improved.
Catching up with the posts here the usual moans about Kamada before and after the game started but fairer comments in later posts. I thought he had a good game. Looked for the ball, won a few tackles, had an eye for a pass. Didnt always execute it although did well for the goal. Maybe a little hesitant at times to make the pass but overall I thought he filled the Eze role pretty well.
Workmanlike performance by the team. Millwall next!

Devenny worked much harder and more efficiently than Kamada. Hence getting in a position to score in the first place. Devenny played well, Kamada average.

When you say Chilwell toile in the first half, do you mean he was in the toilet, because he certainly wasn’t on the pitch 😁

He always does.

Then bounces right back for the next game.

Generally, last night was a professional performance and a great win from a game was always going to be difficult as lower league teams can have their day and on occassions can overturn top teams in the FA-Cup. This is what makes this tournament such great entertainment. Like every game, their are things we could and should have done better, for example creating and converting more chances and also we must improve our playing out from the back, I do wish we would not be so wasteful with erratic clearances that keeps the pressure on our defenders. It would have also been good to have seen more of Franca, as yet I'm not convinces he can live up to his alleged 20m transfer fee. Will Hughes performance was outstanding and credit to OG who has really turned him to a great player and club asset. Overall well done and now let's get some more EPL points and deal with Millwall!

When he made that run in the box near the end it was nice to see Ollie calling to him and applauding him for it. Aldo nice to see Lacroix pushing him forward to the fans after the game. Clearly they all feel for the kid after what he’s been through.
