Crystal Palace vs Brentford match thread

While you may be right it’s all academic as OG won’t change the formation. I felt we should have changed it earlier in the season when we had new players bedding in. Still think that would have meant we’d have a few more points from our opening fixtures. If OG wasn’t going to change then, he won’t now.

I also think that, formation aside, our more fundamental issue is that we just have very little depth in the squad. Mateta is our only viable striker. Eze is our only creative player. Lacroix and Guehi are good but beyond that there isn’t a lot of proven depth at centre half. We have one midfielder who is good at passing and he’s injured.

We can put out a decent starting eleven but beyond that we are weak. It means on days like today or if we get an injury then it’s a problem. Not a surprise given our budget and spending power.
But isn't it a managers job to get the best of what is available, Frank changed formation 3 times in the game today, we made our one change in the 85th min, 2-0 down, formation not players

Yes I agree. Both things are true. The squad lacks depth and OG is quite tactically inflexible. Today we should have been hitting the channels more quickly and looking to turn Brentford around. Playing in front of them was never going to work. Don’t know if that was tactics or the players not doing what OG wanted.

Thomas Franke made changes due to injuries, then to stop us from getting a second goal. He got lucky today, but we certainly don’t get any of that against Brentford!

A day like this has been coming. In OG’s defense we have stuck to plan A for the full 90 mins and squeezed out some good results!

Whilst not playing well, it was as likely we would equalize as ship a second. With Eddie and Eze playing so poorly there is no real plan B available.

I’m sure OG doesn’t tell Eddie to run around like a headless chicken or Eze to stop taking on defenders. Add in Michell’s limited crossing ability and the left side looks dysfunctional at times!

I am told Carlos Corberan (Now at Valencia) deploys a number of systems. One cannot predict with any certainty which formation his team will start with and he changes formations during games.

Though given they just got stuffed 7-1 and are second from bottom of la liga maybe that isn’t such a good thing?

Having put a bit of time between the result and now I agree with people who say it wasn’t our day.

However, what I find a bit depressing is I think this is the team we are and what we will get for the rest of the season. Everyone who said it would click and we’d be back to playing attractive football I don’t think is right. I think we will be largely solid, difficult to beat and have enough quality to win a few games. What we won’t be is fluid or a team that plays exciting attacking football and there will be more days like today.

That’s not a disaster by any means and maybe realistic for our club but it doesn’t feel like we’ve progressed.

They were actually away to Barcelona !
Valencia were struggling when he was handed the 'Reins' last month with only 2 wins in 17 games.

WBA were 23rd after 16 League games when Corberan took charge. They finished 9th that season.
The following season WBA finished 5th and lost in the play-offs to Southampton who proceeded to gain promotion to the PL.

He got Huddersfield to the play-off final where they lost to Nottm Forest.

It was a thoroughly depressing day.
Greater excitement would have been had watching an Agave flower in the Mexican Desert.

I’m not convinced a change of system makes that much difference. If your flair players Eze, Eddie and Kamada don’t contribute that much it is difficult to make any system truly purr. Accurate passing, on target shooting, tackling etc are not conducive to any system working effectively?

Regardless on his performances of late, Eze is still imo easily the most talented player we have in this squad. All players go through bad patches, hopefully he can correct himself as it were and get back on track.

On a side note: Brentford will be straight f***ed when Frank leaves as I still think he will at some point.

I say a fair bit of both. Has Glasner's tactics(Today included) always been spot on? Well no. But I don't totally believe the whole fault lies with him either. We just didn't do the simple things a professional footballer is supposed to do, the system he employed had nothing to do with that.

Lucky I’m in Mexico then and missed the game. Much warmer here in Cancun as well 🙂 Still not happy having seen the result though and reading this thread about our performance today :-(
From me came noisy scoffs of disgust at what I witnessed this afternoon.
The result and performance led to wailing and lamentation in the Willo abode on my return much to the chagrin of my dear wife.

I thought Franks set up his side well - JP wasn't given the freedom to receive long balls played up to him, and they doubled up on the wings so our two main outlets were stifled, the only time we played down the middle effectively was early on when Eze did just about the only good thing all game when he flicked the ball on for Mateta. Brentford seemed to have more purpose and plan to their attacks while we were a bit haphazard. I thought we got found out a bit today, we've been grinding out results against off-form teams lately and our predictability in attack was exposed. I'd have Damsgard over Eze every day of the week. Hopefully we get someone with a bit of attacking sparkle in by the end of the window, Esse will hopefully push Eze into form, and we will improve when the injured players return, but Doucoure is struggling, Franca moreso and Whaton's comeback is still on hold, so we're not going down but 12th looks our best hope for a league finish. We need a cup run or it's going to be quite a forgettable season.

Indeed.
Still, we can count our blessings that we have Nketiah and Kamada !
Furthermore our squad contains players in the twilight of their careers.
I envisage us sliding down the table.
