Crystal Palace vs Brentford match thread

Under dreadful conditions today, neither squad was going to play pretty, or even effective, football. To the critics among us, I'd simply point out that the in-form table says that for the past 10 matches we're still 7th in the League.

It’s a funny one this. We are clearly well organised defensively as a team and have enough to beat teams in poor form. We also have a bit of resilience to get draws against some good teams. However, when we come up against hard working and organised teams we struggle and our attacking play is poor. At times it still looks like the players just can’t make OG’s system work.

Unless we see a huge collapse we aren’t going down. However, it’s also clear that the disjointed attacking play and lack of fluidity is what it’s going to be this season. We could well finish on one of our lowest points totals since being promoted.

Football is a game of attrition. Over decades various systems have been tried and tested to find the key that unlocks the opposition's defence whilst not succumbing to the same. Quite often the key comes in the form of players with that little bit extra ability. In our case those few players we have are not performing to their full ability and so we have become a workmanlike and predictable side lacking that cutting edge.

Yep it is all feeling a bit ‘last days of Wilf’. Teams know we basically have one creative player in Eze. Nullify him and you nullify our whole attack more often than not. When he’s off form that compounds it.

Too brassed off to post yesterday…

An absolute stinker of a day, the weather was shocking and so was our football.

Firstly the positive(s), I thought Hughes was superb and worked his socks off in appalling conditions, Henderson played well and made a fantastic save in the first half - unlucky with the penalty. Esse to bag a goal with his very first touch for us was quite something.

Sadly the negatives made it a tough watch, devoid of entertainment or excitement. Outplayed and outfought by Brentford at Home! We didn’t seem up for it and too many players had poor games.

Richards gave the ball away repeatedly whilst passing out from the back and was too slow to react for their second goal. Mitchell was at fault for both Brentford goals - stood watching the bouncing ball and then slicing a miss-kicked clearance for the first and letting Damsgard cross way too easily for the second. As for his forward play, the less said about that the better. Eze had another one of his meaningless games but this time without a redeeming moment of quality where he scores a worldy or sets up a goal. As a previous poster said earlier, Damsgard was by far the better creative midfielder yesterday, Eze was just a passenger - which is such a waste for his level of ability.

We desperately need a fully fit Wharton and a new LWB, also an upgrade on Richards on the right of the back 3.

I have a feeling it will be a tough February for league points with Manu Utd / Fulham Away and Everton / Villa at Home. Hopefully the FA Cup will give us something to celebrate.

I garland these comments, rooted in sound judgement, with approbation. 👍 👍

I have never been keen on the "one outstanding player" type thing, for me it's a team game and all players have responsibilities for the whole thing to work. Against Brentford more than a few were way below par, not good enough.

One loss, and suddenly Glasner is inept again, formation is wrong etc etc.

Sometimes it just doesn't work.

We weren't battered, it was a pretty right game with both teams mostly nullifying the opponents threat.

I think I must have been at a different game from some of you.

I saw a low quality game being played in very poor weather conditions by two evenly matched teams.

I thought at half time it looked like a 0-0 unless one of the sides either made a mistake or conjured up an unlikely piece of magic. Unfortunately it was LaCroix making a mistake that turned the game in Brentford’s favour.

So ultimately a disappointing defeat that brings out the usual suspects on here questioning the manager, the tactics etc etc. Doesn’t matter that we had previously won three games in a week without conceding a goal. Some of you need to get a grip.

Brentford are the new version of Eddie Howes Bournemouth team. Media darlings that shithouse their way through games . Yesterday’s conditions made it ideal for them to do just that.

Apparently Esse's goal was the first time we've had a one scored by a sub all season. Alright quite a few sub appearances have been from Eddie N whose lack of success has been much discussed but even so it indicates the lack of depth in the squad.

Yes your right but it was another poor home performance and another home defeat , there was no pressure from us the fans yesterday so what is there playing at home excuse.

I think you're central point is fair.

However, it's not so much that Glasner is inept, it's just wondering why he doesn't try something different when it's not working - as was the case yesterday.

Give Brentford something to think about.

Eze e.g stays in the same area more or less every game, rarely venturing from that inside left position, even when he's having little influence on the game.

JPM was having no joy against their 2 strong centre backs yesterday.
Why not give them something else to think about by trying 2 up front for a spell?
Nketiah did come on yesterday, but played in that inside forward role which it's clear doesn't suit him.
Why not try him closer to Mateta to play in and around the penalty area?

There's no guarantee that more flexibility in our approach will succeed, but there's nothing to lose in at least trying.

Nketiah has not been a regular starter for most of his career.
He was bit-part player at Arsenal and when he was loaned to Leeds, then managed by Bielsa, he only scored 3 goals in 17 Championship appearances for the club.I witnessed some of his games at Leeds and I never concluded that he was overly impressive.
He is of course not getting regular starts for our club and I believe a 'Loan' to a Championship club could be beneficial both to him and us, however I suspect this is not on the agenda at this juncture.

That's all true but it's a concern that we haven't had anyone else coming off the bench who could score either.

My takeaways

1. The weather. It's a leveler in rugby or football. It isn't an excuse. It's a fact. If it's a dominant England playing a (then) lowly Scotland in the egg chasing or a David + Goliath cup match in football, history tells us that stormy weather brings out the upsets. Folks refer to flat performances, little energy. That's because stormy weather is sapping. You are running into a force 9 gale. I reckon had we played them Saturday we would have won with ease. Bad luck.

2. Of course, Brentford are good. However, they are poor away and we had momentum. And we are better. So why lose? Because they are jammy feckers and we can never get the run of the green against them. Bogey team. Bad luck.

3. Eze. The fans are turning on him for good reason. There were so many errant passes and lost possessions. It was if he had never played the game before. I still hold out hope. Perhaps Olise was his muse? Maybe Esse can be? Perhaps Wharton always was?

4. Nketiah must be looking at that Esse goal and wishes he had scored one with his first touch. The guy is all about confidence; and he currently has none.

Thats how I saw it.

It wasn't pretty, but was drab all round. Brentford weren't great either.

We couldn't get anything going, but they couldn't either if we are honest. And broadly, we kept Wissa and Mbeumo pretty quiet.

2 teams that were set up to nullify each other pretty effectively.

I would agree but it can depend on who that player is - Tottenham without Kane?
