Crystal Palace v Aston Villa Match Thread

Players coming back injured from International tournaments, isnt the clubs fault.
True but leaving signing Lacroix until the last minute ( which resulted in him getting injured) was, despite him having to agreed to sign early summer. The lack of cover at LWB was also the clubs fault. We are incredibly lucky to have OG and sincerely hope we keep Ho,d of him. Bright times ahead

Compared to the Everton game when the marginal decisions went their way we were on the right side of 2 crucial ones - Richards been possibly off side for our first goal and then the offside for Villa's potential equaliser. It just makes a big difference to us is we play on the break or have to chase a game.
I also thought we did well not to get undone when Villa matched our formation rather than playing their 4 at the back at the start of the game when they had the better of the early play.
Having said that once we got in front we did not sit back and Munoz and Mitchell were still popping up in their 18 yard box. I think this is very positive going forward and showing the confidence that goes with the good run we are on.
Second haul of 20 points with Glasner being my assistant manager in the fantasy premier league
🙂
Not quite sure, but I thought Richard was the only one in our frontline who was onside.

Watching the replay last night it wasn’t Richards who was offside but Sarr himself. As Wharton kicks the ball Sarr is still in front of the defensive line. I don’t think it was even reviewed so alongside the very doubtful one that went the other way the Gods were on our side yesterday.

We played some games earlier in the season when we deserved much more than we got so getting something that went our way is only partial pay back though.

Whilst I am happy that VAR made the correct decisions about offside the rules need to change.

It's ridiculous that goals are judged on whether somebody's toe or hand is a few inches further forward then it should be.

The balance of doubt should go to the attacking team and only if there is clear daylight should it be ruled offside. Quite how you would draft a rule for that I am not sure but hopefully you get my point.

If I was a Villa fan I would not be happy.

True, but when Richards heads the ball, he wasn't offside - isn't that correct?

They even out. Eze at Brentford !

I agree, obviously I was glad their goal was disallowed, but when I got home and see how close it was, that was ridiculous, no one would’ve been bothered by that in the passed, it would’ve been a goal, no complaints, when it’s that close, it’s just not offside. VAR as we all know was to do away with the glaringly obvious mistakes and that wasn’t one

Precisely.

I was concerned when they equalised. We had missed a couple of good chances and they had two goals ruled out for offside, one very marginal. It was even at best up to then and they seemed to have the momentum. The big difference was, I think, the change of keeper. The defence had no confidence in him and looked shaky all through the second half.

Nevertheless a good performance from us, even if the result was perhaps a little flattering. Bags of energy and commitment with no shortage of skill either. Villa are a good side and we are looking every bit as good.

Did you see Emery’s reaction at the end? He barely acknowledged Glasner and looked as though he was about to confront the referee.
yes VAR (finally) seemed to be in our favour last might. Two of our goals were marginally onside and their 1st half effort was inches off. Fine margins etc

Having said that our response after their equaliser (which whilst well taken was poorly defended by all 3 CBs) was excellent. When we attack at pace few teams can live with us.

Emery was really up for it and celebrated their goal accordingly so it was nice to stick it to him.

Well done lads, let's keep it going now.

Disappointing yellow for Hughes although i think McGinn got away with murder a few times and was canny in front of the ref. Can play in the cup games though so i'd definitely start him on Sat

Emery is one of the biggest ref whingers in the league.

As for the keeper I don't know. What could he do about any of it? And it was Martinez that palmed the first after a delightful ball from Wharton and fantastic header from Richards.

I said to the old man that it's Emery's fault, his subs wrecked what they had going forward chasing the game. They lost the midfield totally at that point, Lerma did a great job at getting stuck into them, and it was also countered by Glasner making tweaks so we were more on the break. Truth is Villa defend poorly as a side generally but they have a lot of fast players breaking lines so they are dangerous, and he just replaced them with less effective players.

??

Sarr wasn't offside when Richards headed the ball and that is what matters.

Sick of Glasner, I knew he would be trouble.

Giving us hope that we are going to compete.

OG out now before it's too late and we are talking about winning a cup and finishing top 8.
It's the hope that kills you.

Worry not though before the new season:

Glasner will be poached by a major club and Dyche will be our new manager.

Guehi, JPM and Wharton will be sold.

Parish will be telling us that work on the stadium will start at the end of the next season

Etc.

I agree with this. The peril the offside rule was designed to deal with is goal hanging. Having a goal disallowed as the player forgot to shave that morning is a very different thing.

Perhaps only VAR where the remote team spot something clear and obvious. Didn't Marco Gabbiadini score a goal against us years ago when he was about 10ft + offside.
