CPFC v Man City Match Thread

The gradual improvement in confidence, intensity and balance has us becoming much more competitive. Is it something do with Kamada not playing? Still, we are missing that link up play we had at the end of last season. Wharton';s return might go a long way towards sorting that out perhaps?

We all find Nketiah to be questionable, he clearly has some skill, but no end product - will be interesting to see if Glasner can coach (or not) him to be more impactful, since our forwards have yet to click. Sarr beginning to be a handful though for the opposition, with his speed and direct approach, but his decision making / passing is more often than not quite poor.

The "Olise factor" remains an enigma to be solved. I read he has gone off the boil though at Bayern and had poor games for France. That partnership with Ebs had was sprinkled with some magic fairy dust, yet to be replicated!

Agreed. Mouthy little t***
When he scored at Palace last year, he cupped his ears to the Holmesdale ( who had not been giving him any stick) so it was quite enjoyable giving him a deserved reception as he walked past. All the pundits seem to be ignoring the fact that his first yellow was avoidable

I could be totally wrong here, but it seems to me that the shape of the team is different from a couple of months ago... as in where they stand on the pitch rather than how the teamsheet looks.

We press high and seem to make the opposition pass the ball into the centre. This meant that today Hughes and Lerma weren't chasing the game, it was coming to them and they were both outstanding.

Hoping Palace can keep building, still a lot left this season
I've noticed that Geuhi takes part in more attacks than I have previously noticed. I suspect that he's been told to do this by OG?

Lanzo the forum is all about opinions and no one gets it right all the time. Our start this season has been poor and I get the fans anguish with our drop in form. When OG came in the results were not great, but we hit form and battered everyone. I could tell then this wasn’t a flash in the pan. Fast forward to today and I was gutted we didn’t put City away as I really believed we could turn them over.

To me things are getting back on track…..
Good post although I believe some on here are convinced they are never wrong 🤣

I think overall one of the OG targets is to get more players forward to support the attack(s) so JP isnt isolated & trying to do everything on his own.

Just look at the Spurs game, there were times they were trying to play out from the back & we had 4 players chasing them down in their own box, they were flustered & panicking.

Of course it has its risks because it can leave us vulnerable to counter attacks but mostly / so far we are balancing the various tasks across the pitch quite well.

A point more than I expected and predicted but disappointed we only attained a share of the points after twice taking the lead.
Onwards and upwards!!

I agree Willo, really enjoyed the game and it was a good performance from our chaps, but I did think they were there for the taking and despite an excellent point, I was walking up Whitehorse lane after a bit disappointed we didn’t win, which I suppose is a good thing to be disappointed we didn’t beat the champions.
Funny how games with the same result can feel so different, despite outplaying Newcastle the late equaliser made it feel like a win and I walked away really happy, but city, a tad disappointed 🤔

The match was Sky's game of the day and some noteworthy points emerged from the coverage.
The role of Hughes has been widely and justifiably highlighted, but Lerma also made a valuable contribution.
He won a lot of important headers and provided a lot of energy in pressurisung City players throughout.
Eze's performance has received mixed reviews, but he was perhaps more involved than first thought.
By no means a dominant performance, but lots of good touches that on another day could have led to opportunities.
Sometimes he's perhaps more harshly judged than others with lesser talent.
Devenny continues to look to have a role to play as he doesn't appear phased by first team involvement.
This can sometimes prove a hurdle for young players.

Justin Devenny does well when he come on for Eze and done well filling in for him when he was injured . Something is just not right with Eze at the moment wether it he's not up to full fitness yet or he is still carrying the injury i dont know , he just doesn't get involved as much and doesn't seem as confident or enjoying himself as much out there . Kamada Nketiah no.
Eze's main problem IMO is his apparent lack of confidence in front of goal. So many shots and just the ONE league goal seems to be haunting him. The only other player I would start with instead of him (if it was felt he could benefit from a time on the bench - personally I don't think that would help him) is Devenny who looked good at Villa and has done well in his appearances off the bench. However, I don't think it would be good for Devenny for him to start ahead of a fit (if not 100% match-fit) Eze.

I'm looking at that as a point gained rather than two lost.

City aren't what they were but they did beat Forest convincingly in midweek. And were able to introduce a £100m signing off of the bench.

I don't recall Hughes, and indeed Lerma, having better games in a Palace shirt.

And we scored from a corner !

Ebs still not quite at it but hopefully he'll rediscover his rhythm as he gets more minutes playing time. I have to say he didn't look his usual smiley self when he walked off at the end.

Maybe I'm lacking in ambition when I say that I hope we can squeeze a couple more points from our next two games. Both are far from easy and of course points wise it's better to win one and lose one. But I'd happily take two draws if that's how it turns out.

I agree that Hughes and Lerma had one of their best games for us. Also encouraging to score from a corner and Munoz on the score sheet again is a real plus.

Mitchell again looked better although frustrated the heck out of me in the first half with a couple of rubbish crosses when well placed and in acres of space.

Devenny looks excellent and is terrifically fit and athletic. Whilst I don’t subscribe to all the hate towards Kamada and hope he comes good for us, it is apparent we needn’t have actually bought him because Devenny so far has been better for us.

The defence looks to be playing with more confidence and Hendo is continuing to show signs of being a a contender for Pickfords England jersey.

It’s clear to me that the players are still with Glasner and long may that continue, as we will profit from some stability.

With Kane injured, Olise has been told to play as the lone striker for Bayern. That isn't working for him. However, that Kompany plays him there suggests that he trusts him (it also suggests Kompany is an idiot).
As for France, can't comment.
There was always a thing about Olise. I believe he may have autism or ADHD or something like that. Which is highly likely these days when you consider it. And that affects his relationship with other players who fail to understand his personality.
For instance, remember his quizzical looks when others were celebrating and his personal lack of celebration. And his very quiet interviews.

I posted last week in my dreamworld prediction of a 3-1 win, and in response to a post that Marc Guehi should get fwd more and score, that he should focus more on getting his head on the ball and win the occasional cross. Admittedly, he is probably 6” shorter than the Norwegian but he did very little to even muscle ‘big Erl’ or put him off his soft goal, as did Henderson not coming to attack it either. That aside both had good games, but it cost us. Decent performance n point tho!

eeeeegghh, we're goin' up t' table, or should that be oop table, it's grand lad. By 'eck where's mi Hovis, get down Shep!

i think Teddy Eagle compared Ricoh Lewos's tonsure to that of Dill the Dog - it's a seriously good shout as these links demonstrate. Think I may have found the worst ever footballing barnet, even beats Valderema, John Dempsey and Ian briiton at their worst, Gordon Bolland of Millwall. Hope this adds a bit of zip to your Sunday morning.

I thought a draw was probably a fair result. I think the draw at the Etihad last year was very flattering to us when we scrambled 2 late goals but we played well on the counter and could have some more goals as to be fair could have City. I thought the cross for Haaland's goal was very good. It took out Guehi and Henderson and i think even if Henderson stayed on his line he was not saving the header. No concerns about Eze for me - he is just finding his feet after his injury. He is a quality finisher and probably the best in our team along with Mateta.
8 days break before Brighton and that will be another good test. Let's keep the run going.

I think the biggest issue fans have with Eze is his playing cycle which basically goes:

Plays good
Plays brilliant
Gets injured and is out for 3-6 games
Slow start after injury
Gets slightly better
Plays good
Plays brilliant

Rinse and repeat.

Unfortunately that period when he is brilliant is normally only 5 or 6 matches a season.

Yes, I mentioned this in a recent post. But it is what it is, I'm not sure Eze can be a 7.5 out of 10 player every week, it takes a few games for him to get back into the groove of what his undoubted talent brings.

I haven't seen replay of the mateta incident.

I was anxious for him to get up and help out the defence. He seemed to be just lying there?

Did their goalkeeper take him out? Or anyone else have another view?
