Brighton vs. Crystal Palace match thread

Lacroix just gets better and better.
Monumental today. Absolute star.
Surely he will break into the French senior team next year if he keeps playing like this.
He is so fast.!!
When he signed many reports mentioned his pace but it wasn't that obvious in his first few games - now he's settled in it certainly is. We've got a good 'un here. Future captain?

I hope we can finally accept that we got a bargain when we signed Dean Henderson. Ok he might be on high wages but has arguably been a match winner for us time after time this season.

He is loud, commands his box and is a great shot stopper.

Yep, real proven quality rarely becomes available to buy at a feasible amount while still young.

Buying Henderson, even when you had Johnson was a no brainer because once the chance to buy is gone it's gone. The criticism he received was always short sighted......He made two outstanding saves today and most premiership keepers would have at least conceded one of those and probably both.

I thought the first half we looked like the top 4 team and Brighton the bottom 4 team. We had control and 2-0 did not flatter us. Brighton changed formation and brought on 2 subs and the change shifted momentum. We were getting stretched a lot but kept them out. Some great saves and Lacroix got an important toe to a goal bound shot from Mitoma. Dunk really should have planted in his free header from the corner but these moment's are going our way now when earlier in the season they were not. Once Glasner brought on Kamada and played him in midfield we got a foot hold in the game and it was nice to see Sarr show some composure in slotting in the third.
Nketiah did the hard work with his one one with with a decent dink over the keeper but it fell the wrong side of the post. He looks short of confidence. Sarr on the other hand ( who looked similarly short of confidence earlier in the season ) had by far his best game for Palace. Let's hope Nketiah can recover his.
I like that Glasner was comfortable taking off Eze and Mateta to change the shape. It takes me back to the bad Hodgson days when if had a lead against a team higher in the league he would tend to persevere with the 11 who were on the pitch.
Only downside is losing Munoz for the Arsenal game - he is one of our best players and could have scored for the third game in a row though i felt the ref was correct in disallowing the goal.

As a comparison with £3.4 m in add-ons Onana could end up costing Man U £47.2 m.
I'd rather have who we've got.

Best performance so far this year, great performances by everyone, MOM, Glasner, how wrong i was, also, Mitchell, Lerma, Chalobah improved, Outstanding performances by Henderson, Hughes (again), Sarr and Lacroix, what a player he looks, and Muñoz, what an engine to even be in that position to put the ball in the net, harshly disallowed, and Franca back in light training, wonders never cease. 😀

Really you should have to undergo some form of penance.

Na, only joking.

Now down here on the South Coast a lot of Brighton fans have been talking about Dunk's legs being gone. And under pressure yesterday he was certainly found wanting.

I was at the Bromley v Port Vale game on Saturday with three other Palace fans. When talking about the Brighton game, we all felt like Palace would win and that Dunk could be their weak link. They do have an excellent bar at Hayes Lane so that might have also been a factor in our optimism.

Mark Bright was also there, running the rule over Danny Imray.

On the day it was a real team performance. OG got his tactics spot on and the players implemented them. I'll admit to being worried when he introduced Kamada, and his first few minutes justified my concern but then he seemed to settle down somewhat. As for Nketiah, if I focus just on the positive, that was a good run he made through the middle and it's a shame his execution let him down, but at least he got himself into the situation. He badly needs that goal to restore his confidence.

All in all a memorable day !

Think he might start in the League Cup, Nice team to get his first goal against,

I thought that was Chalobah's best game for us. Aside from the goal he seemed to read the game really well and got some important challenges in. It's a shame Nketiah missed his chance, but doesn't he get an assist for Sarr's second goal with the flick-on?

What's exciting is it still feels like we're not at our best yet. With Wharton to return, Eze to rebuild his sharpness and Doucoure working his way back we have the potential to have a strong second half of the season. What are the odds on us overtaking Brighton again?

I think Chalobah excels in the physical battles probably better than Guehi at getting stuck in. He compliments the other defenders.

It was fascinating , at least for me, to watch as a tactical battle.
The switch that the Brighton manager made at the beginning of the second half caused us problems early on, but then conversely worked in our favour as we were able to expose their defence (particularly Dunk and Estupian) as the half progressed.
Eze and Mateta had physically tired and our subs gave us more energy to close Brighton down and then take the game to Brighton.

It appeared to me that Munoz and Sarr are starting to building up an understanding of each other’s game and are giving us real thrust down our right side.
Brighton are a good side and Henderson had to make a few very good saves.
Nonetheless, we created plenty of other chances (think Eze’s missed header in the first half, saved shots from Doucoure, Sarr and Munoz, the Nketiah miss, the disallowed goal from Munoz).

The other pleasing factor is that we are starting to look more threatening from set pieces.
I saw a still from behind the goal for the Chaloboah goal and we had 5 players attacking the 6 yard box.
The Arsenal games could be a battle of set pieces.

Yep 100%. Agree, like most (I suspect) I was worried seeing Kamada and Nketiah coming on. So we have to give Glasner some credit there.

Don't understand the flack that Kamada is getting however. We were under huge pressure when they came on, and we very quickly gained some control back.

It was (and always is) great to beat Brighton.

A really solid team performance, although we started both halves poorly and Hendo was called on to make a few excellent saves. With 3 CBs i was disappointed to see Dunk given such a free header, but luckily Hendo kept it out. Other than that we defended ok from set pieces (comical og aside).

Sarr looked really good yesterday and took his goals very well - he reminds me of Bruce Dyer a bit, very frustrating to watch, appears clueless at times, but can change a game with occasional moments of brilliance.

I thought the subs were well timed too. Kamada can only really be an Eze replacement as same with Nketiah (for Mateta). Both were struggling to have much impact so 2 like for like replacements made sense. I never want to see Kamada in a 2 man CM and Eddie on the wing again!

Special mention to Hughes in midfield. Quality performance and managed to avoid a yellow card.

yes goalies, especially foreign ones are not cheap these days.

Sanchez at Chelsea was £25m, and even Turner (now on loan at Palace) cost Forest £10m from Arsenal reserves. Young Trafford at Burnley was a similar price to Henderson, which is pretty ridiculous.

£15m upfront for an England goalie is not a bad deal. He is 4 years younger than Johnstone too (27 v 31).

Hendo has his faults - still worry about him from crosses and set pieces, and his one to one positioning and decision making needs to improve etc, but i had the same concerns with SJ too and Speroni as good as he was was not one to dominate his 6 yard box.

As a pure shot stopper Hendo is a a very good keeper.

27 is a relatively young age for a PL keeper and he should have a good number of years ahead of him. Everton paid Sunderland the equivalent of Euros 28m for Pickford back in 2017 when he was 22/23, so more than we've paid for Henderson. Also, as much as I dislike Everton, Pickford has more than repaid that fee with some quite breath-taking performances that basically kept the club in the PL.

Our next job keeper-wise is to identify the right no 2 keeper. I'm hoping that one of Goodman and Whitworth will be able to fulfill that role next season.

still got a grin a mile wide , even were i live now in north shropshire they was singing our praises , Henderson is our new Speroni , Midfield is looking good with Wharton and Doucoure in the back ground , I still think Richards is better than Chalobah but he may prove me wrong , Sarr is starting to look more dangerous but still needs to look up more , Eze at times was 5 levels above everyone on the pitch , but he and Matty looked tired , Matty touch let him down alot yesterday but i give him that , and i won money on sarr happy days , pity Nketiah balls up that chance , Sarr had already shown him the way ,
So all in all a great day at the seaside , so a win weds and saturday will put the icing on the cake COYP

Kamada and Nketiah both did well as subs. Both brought some good energy and stopped them being able to play as freely. Yes Nketiah missed a golden chance and no he hasn’t been good for us generally but one thing I can’t fault him for since he arrived is his effort and energy. Hopefully they can build confidence and settle in more
