Marc Guéhi

Parish is in a very tricky position on Guehi.

It’s a question of market forces, and for some mysterious reason it seems only Liverpool have serious interest.

I would contend he wouldn’t be out of place in any of the top clubs with his consistent excellence, but these clubs don’t seem to share that view.
In today’s market Guehi seems an absolute steal at £40 million, and yet Liverpool appear to be haggling with mooted offers of £25-30 million.
And yet they are prepared to offer incremental £10 million figures to secure Isac (latest offer reputedly £120 million).

On an emotional level I would like Parish to tell Liverpool to put up or shut up.
However, Liverpool seem to be the only bidder and seem to have the view that Parish will eventually cave in and sell Guehi for well below market value to at least realise some value for him.
The last minute nature of this puts further pressure on on Parish in terms of organising a replacement too.
Worst case scenario is that he relents, takes Liverpool’s best offer and then has to compromise on a replacement who may not be a preferred choice or up to the task.

He is a steal at 40 million, but this 1 year left on the contract is blocking the move. Next year the whole world will be after him and a bun fight will ensue. I hope he stays and if Liverpool really want him they would pay the price required.

It still amazes me that Man Utd paid 80 million for that out and out cart horse Maguire!

Manchester United paid £50m for AWB ha ha! We did well out of that deal.

Depends what you mean by a '' top club ''.

Newcastle as we know bid for him last year but didn't match the asking price. Which solved a problem in a way because Guehi didn't want the move anyway.

Spurs made a bid for him in January. Again rebuffed, and to the best of my knowledge not a move that interested the player.

I'm surprised this deal hasn't already been concluded because I think Liverpool, as you say, would be getting a bargain at £40m. However, Palace need to have a replacement lined up and the trail for a centre back seems to have gone cold.

All things considered from both Guehi's and Palace's perspectives, another year with us might be the best solution. Especially if he signed a new deal with a sensible release clause in it.

I agree, but that doesn't tally with Parish's view that he can't countenance Guehi leaving on a free.
It seems clear that he's not going to sign a new contract, and why should he when he can pocket a huge sign on fee from a club as a free.
Olise did agree to extend, but Guehi seems to have a different take on things.

He's so undervalued.
Liverpool could even buy him for £40 million and then sell him again next year for £80 million to e.g Barcelona.
The story is that giant clubs are happy to wait it out and pick him up on a free next season.
Well that won't do them much good if he's already signed for Liverpool.

By way of comparison, Chelsea spent £75 million of Fofana from Leicester and on the rare occasions he's fit he looks way off the pace.
Guehi is proven quality, of great character and hardly ever injured.
He's not even a gamble.

Palace need a centre back regardless of whether Guehi goes. I don’t care whether we played him or not but the fact remains we lost Holding and of course Chalobah last year and Riad is still out with no guarantees as to whether he’ll ever be fit enough or good enough, which leaves 3 centre half’s in the squad plus Lerma.

In this respect it surprises me that we haven’t already replaced that position in the knowledge there is going to be some money coming in and I’m sure our owners could stump up a few million until we got the money in.

Even if Guehi stays it wouldn’t be money wasted as we badly need another body in this part of the field.

I was trying to work out whether it is beneficial to Guehi rather than to us to sign a years extension deal. He would get a massive signing on fee next year once a free agent so we would have to substantially compensate him for that. Maybe offer him £5m to sign a 1 year contract extension with a release clause of £40m. Thats basically another £100k a week but it would net us £35m at the other end and we’d get another season out of him.

Yes, we need another cover player at centre back regardless - so that's potentially two we need !

Of course it's all clickbait rumour but there seems to be more noise around Eze's replacement at the moment.

Another way of looking at it is to let his contract run out.

Yes, we lose a substantial transfer fee but the plus side is we keep him as a king pin in a successful defence for one more season, it gives us time to find a decent replacement AND we won't have to pay Chelsea's sell-on clause.

Thought: would we have won the cup if we'd sold him last January to Newcastle for 65 million?

You are right, there are a number of bang average CHs that have sold for £50m + The only thing I can think is that he has already announced to those in the know in the PL that he only wants to sign for Liverpool. It would be an odd thing to do but it would explain the lack of interest elsewhere.

Liverpool could in my opinion however still be shooting themselves in the foot if they let the opportunity go in this window as despite his perceived willingness to go to Anfield it wouldn’t perhaps stop one of the really big teams like Real or PSG come knocking next year and that might be too tempting to turn down.

I think the Guehi thing about not playing if he went to Liverpool now in an England selection season wouldn’t hold much water as he is already better than Konate and Van Dijk has started to lose a yard. They play enough games as well that all 3 would get plenty of pitch time. He will be in the England squad whether he is at Palace or elsewhere.

Ye it seems that unfortunately our two likely departures Guehi and Eze only have one real suitor. Therefore Liverpool and Spurs can drag it out as long as they want, knowing that deep down Palace do eventually want to sell (as we face big drops in value for the players if not shifted).

Get the feeling that’s what he and his agents wants . I trust what Parish does on this ,it’s not a great hand to have ,the idea of letting Liverpool pull our trousers down doesn’t appeal. At least if he goes free any number of clubs will want him and Liverpool will probably miss out. If Liverpool ,or anyone else really wanted him
£40 mill is bargain basement so why it’s not an auction is strange , but this is Palace.

The excuse that Liverpool seem to be using that because Marc, is in the last year of his contract means he doesn’t warrant the price is total crap. He is the same player , his contract length doesn’t diminish his ability. Whether his contract runs for another five years or as it is one year doesn’t matter If they really wanted him , needed him , his contract wouldn’t put them off. My suspicion all along has been they have never been totally in for him. He is possibly the best, or certainly one of the best English central defenders , a full international with bags of experience, yet in this period of inflated prices with inexperienced kids being quoted in the £40 mill region, Liverpool think he is to expensive at a similar price.
They have been pulling Parishes leg.
