US Politics

If the US moves on Greenland, it gives China the moral thumbs up to move on Taiwan.
But I suppose the reaction here will be “so what?”.
It's not quite the same as Taiwan has a massive military. Literally millions. Greenland has American bases and Denmark's overall military is not large. I doubt there's even a few hundred Danish troops in Greenland but have no actual information.

Trump sabre-rattling with Iran over a new nuclear deal. 4 weeks to go until the deadline for a response, or they'll bomb the hell out of Iran.
I'm amazed they have much weaponry left after all the shipments they've sent to Israel and Saudi Arabia. 🙂
James Vance's trip to Greenland downplayed, although he displayed a stunning lack of courtesy to his hosts by not wearing a suit 🙂

It would produce an interesting dilemma!

Denmark is a NATO member. NATO members are committed to regard an attack on one as an attack on them and to respond collectively.

So the USA would be committed to fighting itself.

Maybe they would need to divide the military along political lines and get things sorted out at home too.

Who are we to complain when our former empire painted half the known world red........
Careful, Becky. You'll be accused of hating Great Britain with talk like that.

Trump announces sweeping tariffs which will change the whole basis of world trade and has the potential to cause a global recession, let alone cause tax to rise in the UK, yet not a word here.

Obviously attacking woke and Starmer whilst defending Le Pen is much more important.

Weird there’s nothing to say on here about the US going on a completely unnecessary trade war against the entire world.

At least it’s shooting their own economy in the foot harder than anyone else’s.

Well, he has the best part of two years to prove you wrong or right before voters judge him on it via the mid-terms.

It’s the last thing the US economy itself needed, let alone most the others impacted by them will be.

For someone so against the Covid economic measures thought you would be outspoken against economies adding more self harm into the equation.

Ha, and you weren't of course regarding them as a necessary evil.

If what Trump says is accurate that the US has the resources required to cover for most of these imports then long term what he's doing makes more sense than shipping jobs out for a slightly lower globalised price......Short term I can see it being difficult as it take time to build factories and supply lines and in some cases the trained workforce.

If America was ever going to go protectionist then this shock treatment is probably necessary as democracies don't have the luxury of multiple term policy and have to show results within a term.

He says he's had 6 trillion in investment commitments......I don't know, I'm not tribally pulled either way on it. He'll be judged on how effective it works out.

Well, yes. Under extreme circumstances when faced with a choice between a lot of extra deaths or economic harm.

Trump is doing this under no such conditions. It’s completely his own choice. Choosing to inflict economic harm on his own, as well as others, as well as rip up his relationships with the US’s closest historic allies, for no reason.

When you look at Sweden's approach I don't think that rings true.

Besides 'no granny left behind' is an unsustainable way....or what's your favourite word...'unserious' way to run an economy. You do what you can but you don't kill the economy....as stated at the time, this wasn't the black death with a 1/3 kill rate.

The vast majority of those that were going to die of Covid, died of it.....or have died or aliments related to it and the longer term weakening of the immune system.

As for Trump.

We will see.

We’ve done the Covid thing to death. And we know like many things you take the convenient ‘wouldn’t have done it like that’ contrarian view which conveniently gives us nothing objective to measure against. Even when you still try and bang the Sweden drum they comparatively fared worse than their nearest neighbours who took lockdown measures.

As for Trump, find me one serious businessman or economist who thinks these tariffs are a good idea.

Would suggest people check the value of their investments and pensions if they think Trump’s measures are a good idea.
