Now that is the big scandal. Man City aren’t where they are just because they spent. It’s because they (allegedly) systematically broke the rules over many years. They are (possibly) the Lance Armstrong of football

That’s another thing. Get rid of these 5 plus year contracts. They mean nothing now. Of if a player signs a long term contract and then wants to leave there are huge penalties to pay the club that holds the registration. Release clauses can f*** off too… where did they come from FFS.

Never happen though but nice idea to have a level playing field and an ability to build a team without it getting raped every time a player scores 3 or more goals or makes 6 passes in a game.

As others have stated, this is a non-starter, practically. I'd prefer a play-off system like the NBA so that the smaller clubs have a slight chance and top clubs would not be so sure of success by hoarding the best players. Don't hold out much hope for that either

Because if you’ve been doing it since childhood with all its memories it’s a hard thing to give up. Despite sometimes sitting there watching dross and being bored shitless game after game, you always think the next one is going to be a classic or the next season is going to be our year
I only have a 90 mile round trip to Selhurst, but so many times through a season I think what the fook am I doing here?? But I think it’s a case of FOMO 🤣now, just incase the next game is a classic or the next season is our year as has been recently, but I’ve got to admit I’m getting less and less bothered about missing out these days, especially now I’ve seen us win some trophies

You are absolutely right. Im flying in tomorrow and I'm more excited to see my family and friends after a long summer than the actual game. 😅

Bosman only applies to players who's contracts have expired (free agents). Mateta is decidedly not a free agent.
 
I’m sick of it now. All the greed, money, disloyalty, Sky and plastic fans. Been going for 55 years but don’t really look forward to the games anymore. Haven’t been to an away game for years. Still got my season ticket. Out of habit and some sense of loyalty than anything else. Glad I’m abroad and not going tomorrow.

I supposed you could change the law to let companies penalise workers genelally. However that would mean that if you didn’t turn up to work, not only could your company not pay you and sack you they could then fine you on top. What you then have isn’t just a contract, it is indentured labour and I can’t see that being a vote winner

In other lines of work, if you refused to carry out your duties, you wouldn't get paid and you'd be out on your ear.

If you pay for a service and don't receive it, you expect to be remunerated. -- it's hard to draw an analogy to the working world because we don't have transfer fees, but all that monetary value doesn't evaporate into thin air.

So you're suggesting that we by 3 times more completely unknown players each window from foreign leagues, 18-20 years old, for 8 figure sums, most fail and are sold at a loss without you ever hearing of them, and the rest, who actually aren't that good, you manage to get Chelsea to pay a good 50% more than they're really worth.

That is their sustainable model.

A club can refuse to pay a player and sack them as well. They don’t though because at that point the player becomes a free agent.

A transfer fee is just compensation for releasing a player form their contract. There is nothing stopping any business from offering a fee to another business to do the same for a person they want to hire. The idea isn’t unique to football.

The reason it happens in football and not in normal work is one of supply and demand. The number of top quality footballers is vanishingly small so there is more demand for them than supply. That’s not the case in most jobs.

Many good points on this thread…in the end, it seems that the only way we could propel Palace into being a more powerful entity in these markets is by increasing our revenue stream primarily by the size of the stadium. We could even move as Everton did. And West Ham although look what happened to them.

Some clubs just have rubbishness in their DNA. Even in the NFL with a system designed to create a level playing field some teams are crap year after year. To take an entirely random example look at the New York Jets (checks their owner and sees if he’s involved in any other sports clubs. Then takes a deep breath)
