They can get f***ed and read about slavery before thinking it was all about them. I feel taxes rising to pay this.

They were hard, look at the list of jobs children then had to do for their families to eat, and Jamaica wants reparations 😒

The most common and hazardous jobs included:
  • Factory Workers: Children were valued for their small size. In textile mills, young "piecers" had to crawl under fast-moving machinery to fix broken threads. In match factories, children dipped matches in toxic white phosphorus, leading to a horrific condition called "phossy jaw". [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Coal Miners: Boys and girls as young as five were sent deep underground. "Trappers" sat in dark, claustrophobic tunnels for 12-hour shifts opening and closing trapdoors for coal carts, while others acted as "drawers" dragging heavy tubs of coal through low shafts. [1, 2, 3]
  • Chimney Sweeps: Young boys were forced to climb up narrow, pitch-black chimneys to scrape out dangerous soot. This highly exploitative practice led to severe health issues and fatal accidents. [1]
  • Domestic Servants: Many poor children were hired out as live-in servants, house boys, or laundry maids for wealthy households, performing hard labor up to 80 hours a week. [1, 2, 3]
  • Street Laborers: Destitute city children survived by performing odd jobs such as "crossing sweepers" (sweeping mud off streets so the wealthy could walk), shoe blacks, newsboys, and selling cheap goods like flowers or matches.

What is the link between this and reparations?

That exploitation comes in different forms and working class people in Britain endured shocking working and living conditions for hundreds of years but would never be deemed worthy of any compensation.
Yeah, I think that all those wealthy, slave owning families who took part in the transportation, sale and use of slaves and were paid reparations by the British government when slavery was 'abolished' , should have to pay those monies (or modern day equivalent) back.

I can actually see that argument, but I don't believe the British taxpayer really owes anything for it. However, your already compensated people isn't a bad one. They gained: none of the rest of us did. There's an argument that British people actively lost out over slavery, but they may also have gained in some convoluted way too.
I don't agree with reparations personally for several reasons: but the obvious thing is where does all this end? There are a million and one things not compensated for and, in many ways, we just have to put up with it and make our own way on life now.
I'm sure most people in Ireland could come up with something, then Scotland, then Wales - then Northern England. Struggling to think what London could ask for. Compensation for Boudicca or something. It could go on for ever frankly. Pretty sure I could find a reason for compensation for any group of people or Nation, state or region. The Cornish obviously, it goes on. The Huguenot etc, etc.

I know where you're coming from but those who profited massively from the enslavement of people should give their reparations back. After all, it can't be excused by warfare since it was carried out only to garner vast profits.

The fact that they were give any reparations at all is a freakin disgrace, in my opinion.

Give it back, you bastards.

What about any profit that was made during the Irish famine? My family should be entitled to some of that if it's gonna be paid back.

I'm not saying there's no moral outrage here, of course there is, however immorality is thematic throughout human history. It's not limited to any specific group of peoples and a completely unworkable concept to demand reparations and expect it to be paid out of good will.

As always, it's a money grab.
