Crystal Palace vs. Larnac match thread

A truly disappointing result.
Without being disrespectful, Larnaca are a limited team yet we have failed to score in our 2 home games against them.
We dominated possession yet we became far too predictable and Larnaca were able to stay in their shape and nullify our attacking threat.
I reached the stage where I simply did not expect us to score and considered removing my rump from my seat and heading back to the south coast with 15 minutes remaining.
The less said about the introduction of Mateta replacing JSL the better.

Last night the sideways passing was pointless. It wasted so much time and Larnaca were completely happy to let us do it.

We won possession back so quickly all night that we should’ve just passed the ball forward with more intensity. Whenever we did we caused them problems, even a ricochet off one of their defenders causes uncertainty and pulls them out of shape. Having said that we also seemed content to pass it from side to side at the back because we lacked movement and energy ahead of our backline and didn’t give them enough options.

Guessand was unlucky not to put us ahead early on and Mitchell similarly so just before half-time. Sarr & Johnson should’ve done better with their shots and Chris Richards missed a free header.

All to play for next week, we just need to convert our chances.

As i have said on other posts, Think of Glasner as a general maintenance man, who is really a plumber, all the plumbing work, top notch, electrical work and general repair's, not so.

Should we exit the competition having failed to progress against Larnaca over 2 legs it will be a humiliation.

Good post.

We now have pace in our team but seem afraid to use it. A few times last night Johnson put crosses into the box and they were causing Larnaca trouble. You would have thought that OG would be screaming at the players for more like that.

As you say JLS was doing fine dining on morsels. Gussand continues to impress me but the tactics were wrong last night.

Just have a bloody go.
Guessand made a couple driving runs last night and JLS showed some good movement to create space but no one else seemed to know what to do. It was also notable that one of their few attacks was ended by Strand Larsen tackling the player by our area - he must have busted a gut to get back there.
Having someone, anyone, who can shoot from any distance might have helped if only to get it pinballing about in the area - doesn't have to be Roberto Carlos just someone who can keep it down and heading in the right direction.
Johnson continues to frustrate; a player who's scored a lot from lurking around the post who never seems to be there (in this system anyway).

I do find it hard people on here think a team that plays 11 defenders deep in very poor weather conditions is easy to breakdown , wind and rain is one of the great natural levellers in sport , it makes better teams struggle and lesser teams defend alot easier .

Soon as that ball leaves the floor your risking it , and today's ball is a balloon , just look at the ball when the corners was being taken it was moving before being kicked , was hoping for 2-0 but was happy for a draw in them conditions , Not sure if the 2nd leg will be played in Cyprus or Greece but I don't expect the same conditions ,

I listened to the radio as don't have TNT at home , but son kept me updated as well , was getting annoyed with Ambrose , Alright for him to talk about shooting he was a one off , not everyone one was as good as him from 35 yards , And kept changing his tune saying weather conditions are bad then started making statements that works in good conditions , that will teach him to support Spurs 🤣
I like Ambrose. Can tell he has a lot of affection for Palace still and I love that he said the Sheff Wed game was one of his favourite alltime games he played in. He called it how a lot of fans have - did we need that many defenders against a team like that

Yes how we haven’t scored against that lot at home in two attempts is unbelievable really, but no surprise I suppose with our home form and our huff and puff attacking, but I’m still confident we’ll go over there and win as we’re not usually as laboured away from home

There was debate as quite why we persisted with 3 central defenders against a team with no attacking threat whatsoever. I suspect had Munoz been available Glasner would have withdrawn Canvot.

The player on the ball looked up and saw statues, any movement came from preset patterns. Lanarca dealt with it quite easily and we got worse as the game progressed. As Willo mentions subbing JSL for the useless Mateta says it all.

We missed Guehi who can run with the ball out of defence and disrupt the 'Shape' of a team content to adopt a defensive posture.

Yes this was a big miss and something I also noticed. Can't believe Canvot or Richards weren't encouraged to do it more. Instead Kamada ended up often dropping deep to collect it and then Larnaca just sat back even more.

Your first sentence is the key - the preset patterns.
If we can all see it , I'm pretty sure the opposition coaches can too.
In theory the patterns lead to a disciplined approach with each player knowing their role and where they should be on the field at a given time.
Fine if you're playing a Man City or Liverpool but not helpful when you're facing a massed defence like Larnaca who have you exactly where they want.
You have to disrupt them whether through quick and early passing, stretching and switching the play, clever dribbles or pinpoint crosses.
Instead we are static, predictable and pedestrian.

Whilst last night was disappointing, this morning -
We didn't concede any goals - unlike Forest.
No one got sent off or sustained any serious injuries -
We had a try out with BJ as stand in for Danny Munoz which wasn't a complete disaster & something we couldn't have done if we hadn't have bought him - if we have to do it again sometime (obviously I hope not but Danny isn't indestructible) I am confident that both BJ & Ollie will have learnt a lot from the experience.
We have the opportunity to put it right in a weeks time.

This was my observation as well.
The two gilt-edged chances to score were a result of Larnaca being exposed in wide areas yet we never really threatened from the flanks.
If we could have engineered overloads and 1 v 1 situations out wide me might have taken a lead to Cyprus.

All Larnaca’s 10 man defence had to do was stand still and watch us pass sideways and then sideways again and again and again and again… absolutely pointless. Nothing changed at half time and then he replaced JSL with Mateta is if that was going make a difference! Johnson looks lost on a football pitch, suggest he finds another career, football isn’t for him, wouldn’t even get in my son’s Sunday league side.

We are just very, very poor against defensive teams. Glasner has no plan to play against them. Ridiculous to keep playing three at the back and not have an extra body in midfield which then lets Wharton and the front three play higher up. We saw against Spurs the damage we can do when Wharton and the forwards are higher up and then totally ignored it. Nothing will change though
