When George Orwell predicted the horrors of 1984 he probably didn't realise he was foretelling the state of the Palace squad during that awful time. I agree we were better in the old Third than we were at the end of Mullery's reign.

Fair point, I think it’s why us old lags get the needle with the younger fans now when they’re tearing their hair out when things arn’t going so well, they just haven’t seen proper rubbish on the pitch and deterioration and chaos off it

The promotion winning teams of Bert Head, Steve Coppell, and Freedman/Holloway had excellent and cheap sigings.

And as a short term signing, how about Jeff Bourne under Venables?
His goals took us to promotion.
