Worst and Best

I was thinking Damien Delaney was probably on a free. Then you would also have Scott Dann and our very own Ward. They were peanuts too. We've almost done better with players we pay little for than players we pay big for.
It's quite a thought that in a relatively short time we've gone from signing three players who'd run through walls for the club to paying the same amount a week in wages to Kamada and Holding and the only walls that come to mind for them involve sausages.

Now I'm hungry.

Off to the fridge.

Maybe not the best of the best but in 2007/8 we signed Shaun Derry, Clint Hill and Paddy McCarthy for a combined £150,000 which in current financial terms is like getting them out of a Jamboree bag.
All good players but your transfer fees are out. Paddy cost £500k from Charlton. He essentially swapped places with Mark Hudson who they signed on a bosman from us.

Derry initially cost £400k when we signed him in 2003 but was £150k when we resigned him from Leeds about 5 years later.

I think Hill was c£150k too.

Both Derry and Hill followed Warnock to QPR as frees when both well into their 30s. Both performed admirably in their promotion year and also in the Prem despite their subsequent relegation

Fair enough. I took the fees from Soccerbase.

John Lacey, David Price awful, Benteke cost us 70m, Sakho similar,

AJ, Trevor Francis singing, i think two free transfers from Chelsea, Micky Droy and Gary Cahill where very important at the time, Forwards, Hmmm, Gareth Taylor, Akinbuye, Paul Dickov, Steffen Iversen, Cameron Jerome, Chris Jones, Tony Mahoney, Andy McCullock, Michele Padovano, Freddy Sears, Sandor Torgelle,
What a list, if this dosent give you nightmares nothing will.

Some real stinkers there.....but of all your examples but far the worst was Trevor Francis's singing......He couldn't hold a note for toffee. 😉

leif anderson, thomas brolin on the other side of the coin chris armstrong, jules

I remember attending a match when we had Brolin in midfield. Before the game started I thought, great here's a midfield general in a Palace shirt: then the game started.

It's rare that a footballer looks flabby but this guy looked like he had trained in a pie shop. Each time the ball was in the air he could jump about two inches off the ground. I seriously wonder if he won a single aerial contest during his entire stint.

I learnt a lesson that day about once good footballers dialing it in at the end of their careers.

It worked out for him in the end.

I recall. Never left the centre circle.

We should stop buying/loaning from Arsenal - David Price, Julian Gray, Tommy Black, Sanogo, Jenkinson, Holding and Nketiah (…so far!).

To compound the issue Arsenal have had Wright and Mcgoldrick from our most successful team.
Julian Gray!?! Brilliant. Losing him to Birmingham in a promotion year the reason we went down.

300k for Bolasie, sold for 25+ mil. Delaney, Gabbidon and Moritz all cam in for zilch - turned us from relegation fodder to promotion contenders overnight.

Akinbiyi has to be the worst, but whatever we paid for Jordon was way too Mutch.😡

I was reminded the other day of when Sanson left the club for Arsenal in a swap deal for Clive Allen......probably one of the worst decisions this club made.....and made by one of our most successful managers Coppell.

During his time at Palace, Allen made 25 league appearances and scored 9 goals (should have been 10), which wasn't bad at all but we were relegated and he was sold off to QPR for 700,000.

Disastrous transaction.

Sansom went on to gain another 77 England caps while playing another 8 years at Arsenal, one of England's most consistent and best players.

For our best transaction.....thankfully there have been many in recent years.....but I'm all typed out.
It was Venables just after the 'Team of the 80's,' was breaking up.

Sansom wanted to leave for financial reasons, a great player and a lovely bloke but destroyed by addiction. He needed the cash and the only way to get it was a move and a signing on fee.
At the time Allen was being touted as the next big thing and went on to have prolific career just not with us!
