What was it called?

On this subject, am I right in thinking that if Palace win on Thursday they'll be the first team to win the Europa Conference having qualified via a domestic trophy win?

I think many supporters, and players, of clubs at our level would soon tire of that approach. Every season the only target would be to avoid relegation
Yeah, perhaps. The play offs were introduced in the lower leagues to prevent loads of dead rubber games at the end of the season and give more teams something to play for. Expanded European qualification does at least serve that purpose in the premier league.

Even so, I would still prefer the old system to return, with the champions in one competition, the runners up in another, and the cup winners in a third. Without repeating my earlier post, the current system just creates a great sprawling dross. Also, it keeps the big clubs in our league far wealthier than everyone else, even when they fail, relatively speaking. If more of them missed out on champions league money every season then there wouldn't be such a closed shop.

Back in the day you had
European cup for league winners only

European cup winners cup for guess who

European fairs cup can't remember who qualified for that.

All were straight knock out comps, same as FA cup and no seeding.
One year Forrest knocked Liverpool ( then holders) in 1st round of European cup. Wouldn't be allowed to happen today too much money involved

Apparently, if results had gone differently yesterday Bournemouth would have qualified for the champions league. By finishing sixth.

What the f*** they would actually have been champions of is unclear to me. It sums up European competition, though.

I hope we win on Wednesday if only to get the crack at the Europa League we were unfairly denied, but even if we do, the conference league is s***. Anyone who is any good at all is already in one of the other competitions because half of Europe qualifies now, so the very bottom of the lowest barrel has been scrapped to find the conference teams. It shows in most of the games.

European competition used to be the pinnacle, now it's often a step down for premier league teams.
You mean a team like Brighton who have “qualified” for the conference. Scraping the bottom again😂
We had better win on Wednesday, as I think they will go deep and possibly win it so in typical fashion the weed do something after we did it first. 🤞🏻

Can’t get on board with the names of the 2 lesser European cups. Heard people, including Palace fans calling it the ‘two Bob cup’ etc.
I’m going old school and will now be referring to it in its old name.
Can someone let me know if we are in the eufa cup final or cup winners cup final please.

Many thanks.
Fairs cup that was 3rd tier also invitation only but lots of big clubs won it , it got taken over by eufa cup when they stopped the cup winners cup

If these European competitions are to continue-and they will because of who is pulling the strings- then certainly the Conference League should be played in the summer break instead of all the friendly games. Palace will have played over 60 games during a 12 month period. Then there are the internationals and their friendly games. Personally, as others have said, I would revert to the original concept of league winners going into champions league, cup winners to Europa league and league cup winners through to Europa conference. The UEFA push for a European league is fuelling this.
