West Ham Match Thread

Having a read of the West Ham fanzine, they cant understand why they paid £40m for Kilman, who they dont rate and we picked up LaCroix for £18m, who they think is far better player.
West Ham have spent millions more than us in recent years, but dont seem to get their recruitment right, they wasted the £100m they got for Rice.
They always do seem to pay over the odds. Not quite Man Utd levels of transfer incompetence but not far off

At half time I expected to end up rueing not scoring while we had the upper hand; but West Ham never turned up. Maybe beating Fulham in a three match week emptied their tank? You coukld say we paced ourselves against Leicester. Good performances all roind; let's hope they can be repeated against Brentford who are sure to make it harder.
Brentford are awful away from home though. They've won just one of all their away matches this season, and it came against Southampton so I'm not sure that really counts to be honest. Obviously we're at our best when playing away it seems but Brentford seem to turn into a completely different team when they're not at the GTech. Really we should beat them and if we do we go above them (assuming United beat the scum today).

It's amazing they didn't pick up Nketiah. Just their type of purchase

They have had a lopsided fixture list with the easier teams at home and tougher away. Let's hope we are now regarded as in the latter category.
Still hard to believe they put out such a weak team in the Cup. They were nailed on as a team that couldn't either be relegated or make the European spots

A total of 23 out of Brentford's 28 pts have been attained at home, however they have lost 3 of their last 4 PL games at the 'Gtech Community Stadium'.
The games in which they were defeated were against Nottm For, Arsenal and Liverpool !

Regarding Nketiah's opportunities, for the first effort it seemed to me that all he had to do was lift it over the oncoming keeper towards the goal, and yet he decided to go wide - poor first touch? The second chance he knocked it wide of the keeper, making the angle tighter for himself, but this time the keeper fell for the trap, clumsily bringing Nketiah down. Perhaps this is the training he's had over the years. Had we been a couple to the good then he should have taken the penalty, but then again it's an issue of confidence - he desperately needs a goal.

Been chasing Nketiah for many seasons, possibly rejecting a loan/ permanent move in the past. Somebody clearly within the club rates him. Have to give him some time, like Mateta, he might improve. Hopefully he can gain more confidence soon. Bit frustrating to see the likes of Delap doing so well. He might of been a good fit here, Murray type of striker but you can't win them all in the transfer market. Certainly would of put more pressure on Mateta early on in the season but he's hitting his stride now.

Yes, it's a premier league goalless streak. I was fuming when we bought him, especially for that amount of money, as I never rated him and though he had scored a few for Arsenal most strikers would with the chances that team creates. I accept it is the exact problem they have right now though!

However, his league cup headed goal was class. A bad player couldn't fluke that. And his runs in behind off the bench yesterday were fabulous. Of course won the penalty with a perfectly timed touch round the keeper.

But his miss really smacked of an out of form player low on confidence. He was already running at an angle away from goal near the edge of a box so to try an take it round the keeper was never going to work. He had to hit it first time. I think like many players over the past year who were not highly rated Glasner will get him going. The team is going to be less stressed about their league position now and can play with more composure and confidence.

While that happens and Mateta is fit Nketiah is good opiton to bring on off the bench to stretch the game and give a threat on the counter. And seems a good understanding with Mateta who is also dropping deep and playing passes through the lines like Harry Kane.
Imagine what it will be like when Wharton is back. We are quietly building a strong and exciting squad now.

Nor do I. I was at the Wolves game when Mateta and Zaha scored in a 0-2 away win. Kilman was useless and I couldn't understand why some people were suggesting he could be an England CB.

On Nketiah, we can’t doubt his effort. I was at the Leicester game where he ran his socks off when he came on. Same yesterday. He’ll come right. He just needs to practice his composure and placement of shots and not just hit it in the general direction. Kluivert’s performance yesterday for Bournemouth was a master-class in a striker glancing up and picking his spot. What a player he is.

Yesterday like at Leicester we were in complete control for the majority of the game. Have to be honest it is many years since I have witnessed that from a Palace team!! OG IMO has and is doing a superb job and long may that last, think SP should be thinking of a new longer term contract for OG!!

I greatly appreciate OG's post match comments. Totally honest and straight forward appraisals of the match and what is required from the team.

He’s 25 and played football his whole life. Been a striker with a top EPL side since he was a teenager. I’m assuming in this time he has practiced finishing so I don’t think a bit more finishing practice is going to transform his scoring. Confidence might though as that is what he lacks.

Fair comment although it doesnt detract from the best strikers knowing how to pick their spot which someone like Nketiah can still work on.

It’s incredible how a name can make you sound like a better player, perfect name for a CH, whereas you wouldn’t want to be stuck in a room with Dean Windass.
