US Politics

I am watching the Trump inauguration speech. Which can be summarised in two words.

Total bullsh*t!

Dumping the green deal, threatening tariffs, taking back the Panama Canal, declaring an emergency at the southern border and, especially, claiming to end something that does exist, the weaponisation of the legal system, is pure Trump bs. Talking of making this the route to make the next years a “golden” period is nonsense. It will add cost, increase inflation and make America poor again, along with the rest of the world.

Most importantly it will ruin the effort to deal with climate change. All in the name of putting America first. Some programme.

Don’t say that you weren’t warned. This is the nadir of American politics.

Ha ha this is great TDS in droves 😂

Not in any way!

The only delusion involved is Trump’s own and anyone who believes the bs.

Anyone watching that speech and looking at his contrived facial expression and the vindictive, nasty and unrealistic words could not in all conscience think otherwise.

It was awful. If anything worse than his first one, and that’s saying something.

Your bestie is on another thread having a mighty TDS meltdown. Quite lush actually. You should check it out. It’s from that socialist poor part of London.
Bromley !

You are obsessed with silly epithets.

I don’t have bestie here. Where anyone lives doesn’t impact their capacity to either think, or care. That applies both to Bromley and Cornwall.

Amazing that there has been no reaction here to the blizzard of executive orders yesterday and the pardoning of the rioters.

I was stunned by it, so maybe others are too and don’t yet know how to react. For sure it will take time to digest and attempt to understand the likely consequences.

So many crazy things, all on the same day. Truly the nadir of US politics. If this was Starmer people here would be accusing him of trying to bury bad news under a pile of even worse news.

So many contradictions. Policies that claim one thing but will deliver another. Talk of a golden age is just rhetoric on fire.

The only thing golden about Trump is the toilet he sits on. Yesterday he had the biggest dump of his life in it hoping might add a golden glow to a pile of total shite.

I did on a different thread.

Do executive orders go directly to the shredder I often wondered.

And yet Harris contrived to lose to him. Quite an achievement when America had already had one term to get to know Trump's ways.

Frankly, I am surprised to bothered to listen to it. I just try as much as possible to tune out from all his BS especially the way he delivers it.

It struck me that it was the greatest of ironies that all this took place in the Capitol; Americans seem to have very short memories of 4 years ago which showed his true colours. As for releasing 1600 people tied up in it all the violence, its beyond incredulous. I can only assume he somehow thinks it proves his innocence of everything that went on that day despite being at the centre of it. Have no doubt, he would do exactly the same again.

One small crumb of comfort in what he has outlined as his priorities is his total inability to run anything effectively. Look at his business record, how he handled covid and many other examples. Its some small slither of hope in all the darkness.

At least one is headed directly to the courts. 18 states have opened a case challenging the executive order that seeks to stop the children of immigrants automatically being US citizens.

The reasoning being that he cannot do that. It’s enshrined in the constitution so the only way to achieve it is through an amendment. Amendments being the responsibility of Congress where a 2/3rd majority is needed in the Senate. So no chance.

It’s like you think he doesn’t know this. Trump is playing you again. He has a reason to divert attention. Starmer is great at it. Annoy people to allow something else to slip through!

The jury is still out on why that is and won’t be back for a while.

She was subjected to some seriously negative campaigning tactics but that alone doesn’t explain why so many were prepared to overlook Trump’s criminal behaviour and total unsuitability for high office. So it’s less why not her, but why him?

There must be a deep collective problem in the minds of a significant number of people in the USA. Determining what that is and how to overcome it will take some time.

As I said earlier he is burying bad things under even worse things, so I am well aware of his tactics. Tactics that no President should ever use.

It’s not me he is playing with! It’s his base. He expects they will now blame the Democratic states.

It’s only the first legal challenge though on just one of the orders. There will be a torrent of them. Which will clog up the courts and cause delays. It would be ironic if the delay tactics Trump used to avoid jail and return to the White House also were used to avoid some of his stupid ideas taking effect.

Negative campaigning on her part was one reason she lost. If she'd concentrated on the good she could do rather than scaremongering the bad about Trump she may have done better. Biden got in essentially because he wasn't Trump. This time that wasn't enough and she needed some actual policies. It would also have helped had Biden stepped down long before he did.

I think it’s now the general opinion of the Democrats that Biden bears a heavy responsibility for deciding to stand again. It’s certainly mine.

I though think it’s almost impossible to campaign against Trump relying on the positive things you could do. He is so outrageous that the damage returning someone who tried to overturn democracy would cause, has to be emphasised.

It’s not why his “base” would vote for him. That’s a given. It’s the swing voters. Surely anyone with even 10% of competence would be preferred, even without any policies, but they weren’t. So why?

I'm not sure. If Trump's shortcomings weren't obvious to voters after his previous presidency and subsequent behaviour then concentrating on them in an election campaign seemed redundant and has proved so.
Trump's message appealed to more Americans - why that might be I don't know but I don't live there and others' election choices are often a mystery anyway.

I did laugh today at a response to Elizabeth Warren’s request for information letter sent to Sam Altman, CEO of Open AI related to his contribution towards Trumps Inauguration fund.

Quote “all money was donated from his personal bank account and he expressed surprise that he hadn’t received similar demands when he had donated significantly larger sums to the Democrat party!”

Some of the double standard reactions to pardons, donations, recriminations etc are cringeworthy.

These idiots are further alienating themselves from normal people in the US and unless they stop focusing on Trump in the near future it will be a “walk in” for Vance in 2028.

I don’t know why either. It makes no sense at all to me.

Nor, it seems, does it to quite a lot of Americans who are as puzzled as us. Just not enough of them.

What double standards are there?

That they are perceived doesn’t mean they exist. Trump has always accused others of that he is himself guilty. It’s the standard response to criticism he learned from Roy Cohn.

The puzzle is why so many fall for it.

Yes Biden issued some pardons but they were primarily intended to protect the innocent from malicious, vindictive prosecution. Contrast that with pardoning 1600 people convicted of trying to overthrow democracy.

Trump is still banging on about him being the target of political Lawfare. He says it so often people start to accept it as real. It isn’t. He did things. Charges were correctly brought, which he had the total freedom to defend. The law was in action. Not politics.
