Team and predictions for Shelbourne

The Larnaca and Fredrikstad games should have made people careful not to underestimate these sides - with a weakened first XI I'd take any type of win. They'll be compact, well organised, motivated and they'll pose a goal threat - their striker has a bit of pedigree, they have a very good defensive record, and in any sport if you can summon your A game (like I did at bar billiards last night) you can upset the odds. The bookies make us stone cold certs - 2/11 us 7/1 draw 22/1 them. As a betting man I'd have a bit of that 7/1 the draw though I think we'll manage a narrow win. The idea of playing a strong team and resting players once we've won it isn't on cos of injuries, and we can't make wholesale changes with our squad, but this could be Esse's chance to step up and show his undoubted class. 2-0 us.

This could be one of those games whereby supporters are anticipating a comfortable victory but turns out to be a frustrating encounter far removed from the expectancy.
For once I agree.

Many missing key players, a tough away outing and the low block issue which has become our Achilles heal.

The "...get to 0-4 and then manage the game..." strikes me as plain hubris. Did they not watch Larnaca?

I would bite your hand off for a 0-1 win, not over exerting and no new injury.

I am certainly not underestimating Shelbourne, in actual fact I am expecting a challenging game.
They are at home and have only lost 7 out of 36 games in their League.
We are not at full strength.

This sounds perfect to me and I'd take it in a heartbeat.

I know YOU'RE not underestimating them - I read your posts with indefatigable scrutiny and extol their verisimilitude and on no occurrence thereof was their the merest inkling of underestimating said party pursuant to our deliberations. However, other posters may have been guilty of the aforementioned misapprehension you silly Willo! 🙂

Oh my word 👍
May I commend you on your grandiloquent rhetorical panache, essaying a great well of oratory.Such immense grandeur.
I bow in reverence and tip my Felt Fedora.

I'm interested to see what OG does tonight. His pre-match comments suggest Sosa or Devenny will start at right back, rather than Clyne being asked to start again. Nketiah surely starts, but I can't see him lasting much more than an hour when you'd imagine Uche comes in. With no Canvot, it's possible Lerma might get a run out in the back three, but I imagine that only happens if one of our usual three needs a rest. Wharton is key to unlocking stubborn defences, but is it a risk for him to be playing so much? It seems a stretch to think Esse will suddenly start unless OG's hand is forced.

My guess is it'll be something like this...

Henderson

Sosa Richards Lacroix Guehi Mitchell

Hughes Lerma

Kamada Nketiah Pino

Support & Behaviour

As we host a UEFA competition fixture, it’s important that all supporters are aware of the behaviour standards expected on the night. UEFA regulations are strict, and any breaches can result in serious sanctions for both individuals and the club:

  • No use of pyrotechnics (flares, smoke bombs, fireworks)—these are strictly prohibited.
  • No offensive, discriminatory or provocative chanting, signs or behaviour—we are proud to be an inclusive club.
  • Respect for the opposition and match officials—our focus is on supporting our team positively and passionately.
  • Walkways and aisles must be kept clear.

I agree with your reasoning and think this will be close to the team selected tonight.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Benitez starts tonight with Sosa right WB and Devenny left WB and then our normal 3 CB’s. Hughes and Lerma midfield with front 3 of Nketia, Uche and Esse? That to me would be a strong 11 and not knackering players needed for Sunday - We shall see 🙂

Palace 2-1 Shels

Benitez
Richards Lacroix Guéhi
Clyne Hughes Kamada Sosa
Uche Devenny
Nketiah

I would have expected Canvot in this game but I believe he’s ill. Clyne is nailed-on in Muñoz’s absence. Believe JP isn’t available either so that leaves Eddie up front in my eyes. Uche for Sarr. Devenny may be given a chance back in the homeland.

Not expecting a walkover like so many are, this Shels side is by far the strongest Irish team right now, and their style of play won’t suit our’s… a la Larnaka. I hope we’ve learned a bit from that game and I tip us to edge it still, but no more than that.

Shelbourne will be well up for it, in a packed stadium. They have talent , as well as adrenalin. But Palace are used to soaking pressure and scoring on the break.

But we'll see.
Thankfully, I'm not the manger and my predictions are 5hlt. What do i know about football ?
