Reform

I have a problem with lots of political funding across the spectrum, but a £5m personal 'gift' is unprecedented in this country - certainly in terms of what has ever been known publicly. Pretending this is just par for the course is pathetic.

We don't know if it's a technical breach of the rules. I don't really care whether they find some bullshit legal loophole or not - I don't need a committee to tell me if I think £5m bungs are ok.

And you've cultishly submitted to a charlatan because you think he's going to save the country.
Well, I'm certain that the cult of Andy Burnham won't save the country and I'm also fairly confident that most people outside of the lefty bubble don't give a monkey's about Nigel Farage getting a hand out from a friend.

What pathetic looks like is someone trying to deflect from the chaos of a Labour Government by attacking one individual.

At least you understand the country needs saving

Yes, because you're delusional.

YouGov:

Nigel Farage favourability, July 2026

The picture looks very different for Nigel Farage, who earlier this month resigned his Clacton seat in order to fight a “people versus the establishment” by-election, following investigations into his financial interests and relationships with wealthy individuals.

Our new figures show that just 22% of Britons now have a favourable opinion of Farage, the lowest recorded by our tracker since 2020. This is relative to 68% of Britons seeing the Reform UK leader in a negative light, the joint-highest figure to date, and includes 56% of the public seeing him very unfavourably.

Altogether, this leaves Farage with a net favourability rating of -46, which is not only the joint lowest figure recorded by our tracker in the ten years it has run, but is on a par with figures recorded by Boris Johnson after the first ‘partygate’ revelations had broken (-42 in early December 2021) and Keir Starmer just before his resignation last month (-45).

It's not a technicality, it's a stated provision.

Also sorry....as I've stated, after the Widdlecombe murder and the attacks on him with the State having turned down the obvious security measures he needs.....my 'giving a feck' meter is about as low as it gets.

The feckers in Parliament give themselves pay rises above inflation and most of them take the p1ss on their expenses and I'm meant to give a damn about money Farage gets outside before being an MP?.....Yeah, not happening.

I'm a Restore guy, but I'm well aware that most of those complaining about this would celebrate if Farage wasn't around to kick the left out.

That's all they care about.
That is exactly what it would be.

The peril the rule is drafted to prevent is money paid for influence.

Thus: money paid; recipient advocated for the cause of that donor.

QED. Very simple.

It is cash for questions save the money was directed to a person who was on the point of being an MP rather than one who had been formally elected.

If that is not a technicality, I would be interested to know what is.

If Parliament finds he breached the rules, there is one certainty. He will bleat that the "establishment", "elites" or other fictitious bogey men are out to get him; and he will be blindly believed by those informed not by fact but by their nationalist leaning.

Nice try.

The General Election will tell us how people really feel.

Murderers, rapists, terrorists, criminal gangs... The economy? Anyone?

So union payments and other donors don't give money for influence? Peeerages and honours are fine then 😀

I'm not going to repeat myself over the five million.

But as to what I've highlighted.
People rarely vote for just one motivation.
Probably the largest aspect that motivates people is to vote for the least worst option from their perspective.

That latter motivation is becoming more and more difficult as every party fights manfully in their race to the bottom.

Dominic Cummings has said that Whitehall will break the law to prevent Reform winning power. Speaking on The Spectator‘s Quite Right! podcast, Cummings said: ‘They’ll leak medical records, they’ll leak tax records. They’ll bug his phone and leak that. They’ll do anything that they need to’.

Possibly.

Let's comment on it if it happens.

You are right. Which makes a change! Most people, whatever their politics, don’t care about anyone getting a “hand out from a friend”.

£5 million is hardly a hand out though and when given to someone in the running for high office it automatically creates suspicions.

Farage needs proper security but this needs to be provided by us, on an appropriate basis after assessment by professionals.

How come his £5 million to be used for security couldn’t pay for him to get some to show up for the declaration last night? And if it was for security, he’ll have the invoices to show that’s what it was used for.

Nothing to fear from this investigation if it’s all above board and the source of their funds are from legitimate sources, have they?
Was it not on advice from the Police? The fact there appears to have been a credible threat to a candidate at a by-election says it all, doesn’t it?

Wasn't his security funding slashed by the government as soon as they saw him as a credible opponent? Seems reasonable he might have wanted to seek out his own protection.

If I took a gift from a wealthy politically active donor in 2002 and became an MP in 2024 I would have cause to question any criticism.

If I took a gift from a wealthy politically active donor in 2023 and became an MP in 2024 and then advocated for his causes as an MP following the election I would have less reason to cry foul.

If Farage escapes on some technicality of timing and literal construction of the rules then well done him. However, that would say more about the rules than the act.
What has happened recently in our political system shows the rules, in many areas, to be farcical

If they make him have another by-election they are all just going to get embarrassed again.

If they want to waste more money just to get two fingers back from a majority of Clacton voters then that's their incompetent decision.

They are all desperate and would support just about anything that stopped Farage.

This kind of thing just helps him, as what happened with Trump proved.
It looks to me as though Farage knew he was going to face a recall from the voters and decided to pre-empt it with this stunt. Hoping they would not want to do it again, which is probably true.

Ultimately though the accusations of sleaze will stick in the minds of many.

Essex police have said they didn’t give any advice to any candidate not to attend the count. Another lie that he’s quite happy to send out into the public knowing many will believe it.

Personally I would rather be pay for it himself than burden the taxpayer.

Of course the Police always tell the truth don’t they! Unfortunately many believe every word they say.
