Re-watching good Cinema & TV

Why does no one show midnight Cowboy anymore? Hoffman and Voight at their best

woke is killing our recollections of the past. Before a recent showing of 'Lawrence of Arabia' the tv presenter gave a big long apology of its outdated attitudes and racism.

The Penguin..........worth re-watching

the new 'Day of the Jackal'............. utter tripe.

Is actually "I am Legend" which was remade with Will Smith if you ever saw it.
and covered by the black punk band ' bad brains' (the track - omega man) saw them several times at 'dingwalls' camden lock.
I wrote to them in the 70s and offered to put them up at my parents house, when next touring.
Funnily enough, I got no response, which was probably for the best.

My cousin was an extra on the Dick Emery show. When UK Gold and the other nostalgia channels started he was hoping they would show them as he would get residuals and he wasn't well off.

Well for a long time apparently there was a problem with the TV rights and by the time that had been cleared up Woke TV had arrived. It is doubtful they will be shown much on TV or maybe not in full due to some of his characters.

I am currently enjoying Steptoe and Son which is on a very obscure TV channel, the BBC would have a heart attack if they showed it.

I watched 'Rush' last night, for the first time. I remember the 1976 season, but the F1 season wasn't on TV as much , back then in the 1970's, so it was a bit of a reluctant watch.
Probably better to have watched it in the cinema, purely for the sound, but my sound box did it's best.
The TV event was interrupted by the arrival of Mrs Hillbilly who entered the room, just as James Hunt was smashing the granny out of an air stewardess. "What the Hell are you watching?", was the rhetorical question, before the DVD was turned off.
Later, when Mrs Hillbilly had fcked off to bed, I watched the rest of the film. Really good CGI, so that I couldn't tell what was real and what wasn't.
And Crystal Palace Park is in the film quite early, as James Hunt and Niki Lauda start their careers racing there.
Really very good film, highlighting the personality traits of the competing drivers, Lauda and Hunt.
and it's got cars and tits in it too. 😀

As a motor sport fan and James Hunt being one of my early heroes, I loved that film. It was probably that F1 season that got me into motor sport in general. I’ve still got the scalectrix models of their cars in the loft

Used to go to Crystal Palace park and watch the racing through the fence. I don't remember seeing much - just an occasional blur as they went by and it was very loud indeed.

Talking Pictures are repeating Rumpole of the Bailey - some of the stories are a bit shonky but Leo McKern is great in the role.

There are some movies I will always find time to watch if they are on tv, even if I have seen them many times.

Sometimes it is because they were childhood inspirations (Time Bandits, Blade Runner, Star Wars). Other times it is because they have a notable villain who has some comedy or killer one liners (several Bond movies, Desperado, Die Hard, Collateral).

With middle age it has become more about the casting or individual performances. Sometimes also the subject matter (The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, Schindler's List, The Dark Knight trilogy, 21 Bridges, Heat, Casino, Scar Face).

In terms of series, the same rules seem to have applied. I could rewatch I, Claudius, Between The Lines, Luther, Harry's Game and many other series any day.

I love this show but the production values are laughable. It's ripe to be re-made hopefully Derek Jacobi could still play the older Claudius.

Natalie Dormer plays the nurse who he bangs behind the curtain in the ward and takes to race meetings. She’s been in a lot of things and is hot in ‘Tudors’ as Anne Boleyn. But boy do they make her quite rank as a chav in a new film called ‘The Wasp’ with Naomi Harries who plays a good looking middle class lady.

I concur on appreciating actors and performances more. You missed out ‘The Pianist’.

Have you watched the ‘Gangs of London’ series? The trailers are rubbish but the series are very good.

Coming up this coming week Some of the great Powell and Pressberger movies - a matter of Life and Death, I know where I’m Going, Colonel Blimp. Powell and Pressberger are two of our finest directors and were the inspiration that got Martin Scorsese making movies. I shall be glued.

I've lost count of the number of times I've watched The Sopranos. A close second is The Wire.

Films I re-watch tend to be comedies - The Producers, Play It Again Sam and Spinal Tap being the most watched.

And I didn't get where I am today without watching the re-run of the original Reggie Perrin
Ah yes, on all fronts, although I would add A Band of Brothers to that TV roster.

And to the movies, Withnail and I, My Life as a Dog and Annie Hall. Never tire.

But The Third Man, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Laughton version) and A Canterbury Tale are the movies I could happily sit down to once a month... if only my family would allow it.

Ha, I didn't read this post and then said A Canterbury Tale was an all timer for me in the very next one.

I Know Where I'm Going, defo a masterpiece.

By chance I saw an episode of Robin Hood with Richard Greene on TPTV yesterday. I used to love it when I was a boy, but it looks very feeble now. Still it was fun to see it again.

Dad bought me the theme song on a 78, which I still have and although it has the twang and thud of an arrow being fired at the start, it's on the Embassy label which he got from Woolworths so a cheap imitation.

You might have to explain what a 78 is to the younger viewers POG 👴🏻😁

Great call re Band of Brothers. Another one I've watched countless times - how did I leave that out ?!

I prefer the Millwall version

Bobby Moore, Bobby Moore.....

I wondered about that Monkey, but then I found it difficult to explain to whippersnappers how this breakable, shellac disc could be played and heard on a wind-up gramophone and decided to let them look on Google or such like to satisfy their curiosity.

Bloody Google, it takes away the pleasure of us old buggers boring youngsters about the past 🤣
