Plight of Farmers.

Those feckless include the offspring of the super rich who just spend Daddy’s money and contribute nothing.

I inherited nothing in my life. Everything I have I made myself. Those inheriting £500,000 do very well.

I have no idea why you think MPs can avoid tax anymore than the next person. They have allowable expenses, but that’s not unusual.

They don’t take tax from us! That’s the attitude of the truly ignorant.

They manage the tax that the country raises to pay for the services we share.
I can imagine the Worzels putting this to music, I've got twenty acres and you've got 43.

Did I mention services? I don't think that post contains any reference to services, even a good agricultural servicing.

John Cooper-Clarke warned me off that rag a long time before I was interested in redtop newspapers. I mean, no Janie Jones!!!

But the "empirical evidence" seems to be flaky according to 'emerging' evidence. I too want to make the 'uber rich' pay what is due. Tax evasion should be punished. But passing on a working farm is not tax evasion. Farmers of medium sized farms, who WILL be affected mostly earn around £20-40k per annum. Now their heirs, who live and work on the farm already, and have likely won a degree in agriculture at university, will have to pay 20% tax on the estate. They won't be able to afford that, so they will have to sell some land off, which they will have to pay 40% CGT. So effectively 60% tax for their father/mother dying.

But that's OK by you, in your retirement house by the sea, reading the Guardian amongst the other rich townies who live in Portishead. You should come south a bit and speak to some real farmers in rural Somerset.
Nobody passing land on to their descendants will pay CGT on it. Putting land into Trust is a well trod path and a matter of discussion in every rural pub in the UK. But if selling out, why should the descendants of farmers benefit more than any other person whose parents have left them property or a business?

Not sure I agree about them not being diverse enough AS.

From what I can see they need to have vast knowledge of their particular branch of farming in addition to a practical understanding of veterinary practice, mechanics, carpentry, metalwork, genetics, accountancy, marketing and administration. And be prepared to turn out in the bitter cold at the dead of night to carry out any one aspect of their very wide range of diverse skills.

I've just been to our local recycling centre in the snow and that was enough for me thank you very much.
Is that how you view Jeremy Clarkson?

so if you are super rich, why should you make your kids work?? Let them enjoy life if they/you can afford it. Would you have made your kids work had you been super rich, I know I wouldnt have..
You know as well as I do that the MPs can and do avoid tax as much as any criminal...Angela Rayner for a recent example, Deputy PM (God help us if Starmer died) avoiding tax on her 'right to buy' house and NOTHING is done about it! She aint the only one. Flip flopping houses and making fortunes at the taxpayers expense. So oh wise one who does take tax from us if not the government ?Allowable expenses? Including 170k in 'gifts'?? Just so glad I dont have to live in the UK any more..

Are you talking about the argument that Rayner should have paid CGT? The one where a thorough investigation, more than you would ever see, cleared her of any wrongdoing? The one where even had she owed the CGT the figure would have been around £2k? That one? Oh do me a favour.

Food security I suppose?

And a desire to avoid the US situation of huge food industrial corps buying up everything and turning the countryside into a chemical drenched mass production wasteland.

It does highlight the Idea of "a good accountant" is one that is good at finding the relevant loopholes for you to avoid paying tax.

So its ok or the MPs to lie then?? Investigation by her colleagues in the Labour Party?? Doesnt matter if it was 2k or 20k, it still would be wrong, except it seems in your world. Oh and Wisbech's

The overriding point is that this is a step in the wrong in direction.

Inheritance tax is morally wrong. It should be phased out for everyone.

It was so much more than we would ever see, that we never saw it.

All of them. Which is a lot more than just health. Our defences, social services, education, prisons, courts, transport networks etc etc. They don’t run on thin air!
