This is true but rather like Panenkas this tactic makes you look like a complete pilchard if you miss and isn't that impressive if you score. Also suspect it gives more time to change your mind - pick a side, run up and belt it. Let Devenny run a few penalty training sessions.

It makes zero sense. We were not even treading water until WH came on. Kamada has improved but he’s not the right foil for Wharton.

Kamada has got an unbelievable engine. He never stops running and is perfect for Glasner's high press style. He also moves across the pitch much faster than Hughes.

However, i agree that Hughes should start. What he lacks in pace he makes up for in tenacity, leadership and general understanding of the game. Our midfield always seems so much better when he is in it!!!!
 
I thought that you were not allowed to break your approach to the ball when taking a penalty. If rules have changed then it's not for the better. These "cool" penalties are disrespectful, and in my opinion if the approach to the ball is broken then the penalty should be cancelled and a yellow card awarded.

Hughes was immense again when he came on. If he can have a season like he did the previous one then we will be ok.

Wharton looked bigger? Bossed it more and seemed even more composed yesterday too. I think an injury free start, a decent pre season and the Premier League and International experience gained last season has helped his confidence and maturity no end. Could be our player of the season this year.

The penalty taker can start and stop during his/her run-up but they are not permitted to stop or pretend to kick when they have reached the ball.

Hughes is such a brilliant player for us and hope he keeps it up.

An injury-free Wharton is world class in my humble but of course rose-tinted view, his pass for Sarr's goal yesterday was just one of those moments that highlights this. He's still only 21 and agree he looked bigger, may just be growing into his 'man's body' at that stage of life. What a player.

As Alisson was using all the delaying tactics yesterday, Devenny was already stood by the penalty spot, waiting with the ball tucked under his arm. I was thinking ‘Oh f***…don’t bottle it’. Then as Alisson slowly sauntered towards the goal to take up his position Devenny looks up at all the Liverpool supporters behind the goal, booing, whistling and jeering and making obscene gestures towards him, I thought ‘Oh my god don’t do that - look away, don’t look at them!’

He then took the coolest, calmest, BEST pen I’ve ever seen our team score at a moment of such importance and under such pressure. Absolutely incredible! Huge Cojones…well done that man, give him a statue in front of the new Main Stand! 😂
 
My reflections on yesterday:

- Palace can beat any team, even the reigning champions.
- Henderson is better than Pickford and should be England's first choice.
- Hughes is a tougher nut than Kamada and deserves to be one of the first names on the team sheet.
- Someone needs to show Eze how to take a proper penalty. Embarrassing.
- Ollie is the best manager we've ever had and Mr P needs to get him on a juicy long term deal.
- Sarr is now an established threat up front.
- Salah is a spent force.
- Van Dijk is a bad loser
- oh, and McManaman is a very poor pundit.

Another wonderful day and another magnificent trophy.

I think one of the reason for Wharton's growing influences in the game yesterday was the introduction of Hughes.
Hughes wins it, gives it simply and enables Wharton to do his stuff.
I'm happy enough with Kamada in there also as he has many strengths too, but the partnership that Hughes has with Wharton gives him a slight edge in my view.

Agree.

Hughes' issue is discipline. But for, he might have been knocking at the England squad. But to start or not to start? Last 25 minutes: enough time to make an impact; less time to pick up a card.

I'm not convinced there, I think it's part of his game and the issue is athleticism.

There are times when he won't win the ball back with athleticism so a foul is used and other times when he'll give away a foul but I am sure he has the best intentions and gets there as quickly as he can!
