Palace v Liverpool match thread

I did pal! I saw the reaction first hand and remember it well!

I’m originally from the Midlands and have a lot of friends who are Forest Fans (including my best mate) and they were at that match at Hillsborough for the Semi-Final. Some of them went on the pitch as it unfolded to help. All of them saw things that day that they are still massively scarred by.

They saw Liverpool supporters being absolute scum! Pissed up, fighting with the police, who were trying to help and others stealing watches, jewellery and money from unconscious people being treated on the pitch. They stated this to me that very evening when they returned from the game - before any of the media reports filtered through in the following day(s). They were disgusted, traumatised and still hate Liverpool supporters today because of it.

The issues that day were caused by Liverpool supporters (many of whom were drunk) forcing their way into the stadium without tickets! They are renowned for this and always have been!

I’m a retired police officer having served 35 years with the Met Police. I have worked hundreds of games at London grounds during that time, numerous ones involving Liverpool and Everton. I’ve also worked loads of their Wembley games during that time and for 20 odd years of my service I worked them as an FIO (Football Intelligence Officer).

EVERY Wembley game involving either Liverpool or Everton we would have hundreds & hundreds of ejections because of unauthorised entry. Forgeries, duplicate tickets, photocopies, bunking in, forcing open the barriers, bribing stewards & gate staff and mates getting in and opening up fire exits or gates from inside to let their mates in. Any other Wembley game involving ANY other team and we’d have on average 30-50 ejections. Put Liverpool or Everton there and we’d have 400 plus!!!

I also worked a particular match at Chelsea and was situated at the Bovril Gate and witnessed first hand, pissed up, ticketless Liverpool supporters trying to force their way into the Bovril Gate en masse, we’re talking hundreds trying to push through police lines and then those that did get through rushed the turnstiles and gates and forced their way into the ground, this was many years AFTER Hillsborough. It was known beforehand that they were going to do this as we had source intel from within the fanbase attending the game that this was being planned. Liverpool of ALL teams planning to do this!

I have also witnessed first hand this same behaviour at West Ham (Upton Park) and with Everton supporters at Fulham. I’ve only ever seen this large scale, ticketless, forced entry on that scale (with English domestic clubs) with Liverpool or Everton supporters.

I could go on listing several more shocking personal experiences with the supporters of these two teams but a lot of it is just repetition of the same theme; Drunk, ticketless, abusive, violent, indecent and intent on getting in the ground AT ANY COST.

We also had a number of Palace supporters scammed by supposed Liverpool fans with Club Wembley FA Cup Semi Final & Final tickets.

I was 19 at the time of Hillsborough - a complete football fanatic, attending Palace matches every weekend home & away. I was also an adult, working full time as a police officer, having joined the Met and moved down to London at age 18.

I obviously don’t know but you may have only been 11 at the time of Hillsborough??? (Judging by your registered members name on here?). Possibly attending school or maybe stealing hub caps? Either way, if I’m correct about your age & circumstances then there’s absolutely no question who has the clearer ‘experience’ of the day or of the ‘national reaction’ as you put it, or of what happened in the aftermath of the reporting!

EVERYONE bar the ‘never their fault’ brigade know what happened that day and why.

Everyone bar the ‘never their fault’ brigade know that it was the Liverpool supporters who were responsible for the Hesysel Stadium tragedy and deaths in 1985.

Everyone bar the ‘never their fault’ brigade know why it was only the Liverpool ‘fans’ that had issues on the concourse and at the turnstiles of the Stade de France (Champions League Final 2022) when the thousands upon thousands of Real Madrid supporters had NO issues whatsoever 🙄

Let me be clear, I have the utmost sympathy and compassion for the Liverpool supporters who died that day at Hillsborough and with the families who lost loved ones.

They were the innocent victims who had match tickets and who were in the ground early and at the front of the terracing.
They were tragically crushed to death by their own supporters who forced their way in and onto a massively overcrowded Leppings Lane terrace!

I cannot overstate my utter disgust at what I’ve witnessed from Liverpool supporters during my 55 years and from what I have seen reported and heard from others.

My absolute and total contempt and dislike for their fan base as a whole, is as a result of this…and their ‘unfortunate’ habit of always being involved in these events.

Their pathetic and repugnant treatment of our Country’s National Anthem today has just served to affirm everything I’ve ever thought about them.
Didn't the official enquiry state that they was a crush occurring outside so the police opened the gates, but didn't direct the fans into the pen which was empty. Seen enough on this to see it was the fault of the police and the contempt they had for fans back in that era.

In all honesty, watching the recent arrests in London for peaceful protesters says it all. Police wouldn't do that to 50 Millwall fans all singing and chanting out the forbidden words. Says it all really.

Having been slow to tune in I'd mistakenly supposed the silence was for Suleiman Al-Obeid; only realised it was Jota somewhat belatedly.
Regardless, did you/would you have interrupted either way? I’m sure you didn’t/wouldn’t.

My point is that it’s not hard to have compassion for a human life. God forbid we were to lose a current first team player in a tragic accident, we’d be distraught and would expect any football fan worth their salt to show empathy.

Just had a brief scroll back through this thread and I know there is bitterness towards Liverpool as a club and their fanbase but some things transcend football and prejudices I think??

Them booing the national anthem is f*cking weird and deplorable to an extent but even that I think is an aside to the Jota thing. Some have speculated that he was responsible for his death and that of his brother through reckless driving or whatever but I still think that’s irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. It’s a tragedy and that’s all there is to it IMO

I have deleted my original comment as I think it was unnecessary and detracts from our accomplishment today. I’ve left my reply to your comment as the sentiment remains.

Up the f*cking Palace, we are massive and I don’t want any other incidents to take away from our glorious win today, but there are certain issues that need to be curtailed so wanted to speak up. I recognise now having had a more in-depth scroll through this thread, I am not alone in calling out the idiot(s) that disrupted the moment’s silence today, I highly doubt the offender is on these forums but in the rare chance that they are, shame on you.

There was no easy way for us here in NZ to view it, so we're relying on highlights only. Wondering if someone who watched the game had a spare 5 mins could do us a bit of a player ratings? Or something.

Henderson - 8...great penalty saves and distributed well.
Mitchell - 6...handled Salah mostly well, but needs to offer much more in possession.

As examples 🙂

Great day for Parish. Hughes comes on and bosses midfield (Why is Tuchel picking Jones?!). Devenney comes on and scores the winning penalty. Who needs a bigger squad, he'll be thinking

Crystal Palace Player Ratings vs. Liverpool (out of 10)

  • Dean Henderson (GK) – 6.8 …came under pressure in the shootout, but held firm.
  • Chris Richards (CB) – 6.4 …solid if understated defensive presence.
  • Maxence Lacroix (CB) – 6.4 …helped stem the flow but uneven on possession.
  • Marc Guehi (CB, captain) – 6.9 …most assured of the backline, anchored Palace defensively.
  • Daniel Muñoz (RWB) – 7.8 …most influential going forward, high work-rate.
  • Daichi Kamada (CM) – 6.2 …steady possession, but limited impact before injury.
  • Adam Wharton (CM) – 7.3 …key creative spark; assist for the late equalizer.
  • Tyrick Mitchell (LWB) – 7.1 …balanced defensive stability with forward thrust.
  • Ismaïla Sarr (AM) – 7.9 …vital equalizer, constant counter-attack threat.
  • Eberechi Eze (AM) – 6.8 …quiet presence, not heavily involved.
  • Jean-Philippe Mateta (CF) – 7.2 …composed penalty and spatial presence up front.

Substitutes:

  • Will Hughes (for Kamada, 29′) – 7.1 …steady and energetic change.
  • Borna Sosa (for Mitchell, 79′) – 6.2 …modest impact late on.
  • Jefferson Lerma (for Wharton, 85′) – N/A …too brief to judge.
  • Justin Devenny (for Guehi, 90′) – N/A …scored the winning penalty in shootout.

looks about right to me. Might up Hughes and reduce Munoz a bit as most of his crosses were not quite on the mark

Hope Kamada is not badly injured, but it might give Hughes a good chance to pair up with Wharton in midfield again, which was a much more effective combination over the course of last year. Daichi gave us a great couple of games at Wembley but I wonder if some of that is down to the large pitch giving him a bit more time on the ball

I would reduce Mitchell and Munoz (slightly) because of the many wayward crosses as you said, and would also up Hughes.

Would also say MG was not the standout CB today. Think Max was much more assured and Richards looked very composed on the ball. Both of them had more meaningful touches than MG I think.

Pretty accurate otherwise though, Eze given a difficult job today, lots expected of him but was made to play a lot deeper than is natural for him. He excels when playing freely in the true number 10 role which he wasn’t afforded today. Still, not his best performance by a long stretch.

This is a really astute observation on Kamada that I, for one, hadn’t considered. The frustration with him in the league was that he always seemed to want to take too much time on the ball, and then he suddenly showed a new aptitude in the SF and final in the cup. I hadn’t thought that it could be due to the larger pitch and resultant additional time on the ball but it makes a lot of sense! I do hope he’s not out for long as there is definitely a player there and we certainly need him at our disposal this season but will be interesting to see if he has fully adapted to the premier league now and particularly our style of play

Yeah, good call. I have no issues with Kamada being an option off the bench...might give us a different dimension if we're chasing a game. But Wharton and Hughes has to be the starting duo. Simply has to be.

Well I'm way out in the east right now so couldn't help but nod off into Dreamland not long after the second half.

Now, I am utterly convinced I woke up and checked the score later to find it was 4-3 to Liverpool so to properly wake up now and see posts from people about "Deveney scoring the winning goal" and all really threw me!

Happy days 🙂

Thanks Phil’s barber. You clearly don’t understand the boos because you didn’t experience the national reaction to Hillsborough and the lies that were perpetuated by the government for 30 years before they admitted it was slander. As Londoners you have no idea what it’s like to live 200 miles away and be as irrelevant and distegarded as the city of Liverpool is. I’ve lived in both cities, I’ve seen it from both sides.

Anyway. Palace is a top club with top fans but Phil’s barber is a f***ing prick. Educate yourself you prick

Why did it take your lot 20 years to even put up so much as a memorial brick for the 39 your lot killed at Heysel?

Always some else's fault in Liverpool

I don’t think it was comfortably put away- - a foot off the ground just off centre?
I’m glad he did it, but Justin’s was excellent. Next penalty we get I would like him to take it.
Yes, but look at the way he did it. Made it look like he was going left with body shape, it was a fine feint.

I had a good chat with Steve Browett once and he told me he was at Heysel aged 18 with a Liverpool fan mate. Said it was chaos, obviously going to happen because the Scouse were all drunk long before kickoff and there were few officials about to control them. Ofc they tried to blame Juve fans with stories about guns, but honestly who charges into gunfire? Bullshit, they charged those Juve fans and 39 died, but Liverpool FC brushed it away for decades.

And we lost our on Europe because of them, as did several other clubs.

Loads of Liverpool fans at London Bridge travelling home South. So why did they boo the Anthem. Nearest they’ve been to Anfield is watching the scouse on the TV. Absolute scum.

Eze should be banned from taking any of our penalties!
Exactly! If I remember correctly, it was the third time he had given away a penalty with that silly voodoo dance. Ollie noted that they had provided Hendo with a study of Liverpool's penalty takers before the game. How on earth can Eze believe that a professional club like Liverpool don't do the same? He should take a look at Devenny. This youngster volunteered to take the last pen and converted it in front of 90K at Wembley like at the training ground. But okay, rant over, everything turned out fine in the end so it was just a lesson for Eze.
