Palace Summer 2026 transfers?

Why is there a subset of fans that have zero commercial competence?

In an ideal world we keep JP. But having a healthy balance sheets allows us to build a bigger and stronger squad. To finally get a back up right back, to sign exciting prospects like Gozo etc.

Guehi is the best example of this. Many were happy to 'lose' the 20m for 5 months more Guehi. Parish 100% made the right call. We won the cup, Canvot/Riad got valuable experience and now if Munoz gets injured we wont have to play Clyne at wing back!

There of course is a balance and will always be exceptions, but we have to be smart. Sell when the money is there, when contracts are short, and the player is past their peak.
Well, Mateta was sold in January, but for the medical. The expectations were that Larsen and Johnson would pick up the slack. That did not prove to be the case and we would have been in more trouble in the league without JPM and you won't need reminding who scored the only goal in the Conference final

A sports management friend of mine has just said that we enquired or were touted 2 Liverpool players at start of the month. One being none other than Joe Gomez and speculated a pretty low fee of circa £10m could be enough.

Supposedly had discussions with us in Summer 23 for a loan, but wanted to be playing CB and not RB of which we were more interested in at the time. Would be happier with him over Disasi TBH, if he can stay injury-free.

He wouldn't confirm the second player but said "asking price was a bit high considering and don't think we need him now". His face changed slightly when I said Harvey Elliott...

I've no reason to doubt my friend and can defo believe we'd try do a bargain deal for either with contracts being up at end of the season.
Elliott has the feel of a lightweight midfielder at a big club who has problems proving it on a regular basis. - a bit like McAtee and Lewis. He didn't cut it at Villa and like Curtis Jones, would probably do better in Europe. I'm just hoping Pino isn't cut from the same cloth

In four of the past six seasons, Gomez has had less than 700 minutes in the league. Free agent next summer might be worth considering then

Ever since he moved to Liverpool the Charlton fans have been speculating about when they will cash in on his sell on clause. I suppose it's like us and Olise.

If he goes for a free next summer they will get nothing.

As one of those with zero commercial competence I want to keep Mateta because his record shows him to be in top 5 scorers in the Premier League in recent seasons as well as our all time top scorer in the Premier League.
This type of player is priceless to a club like Palace.
He even got the winner in our European final.

Glasner said he's the best finisher he has ever worked with.

Furthermore, Mateta has been integral to our style of play acting as a focal point for our attack , linking play and defending from the front.

Larsen is not a patch on Mateta as a player, and I'm going to make a bold prediction - he never will be in terms of goals or overall contribution for Palace.
Come back and heap scorn on me if I'm wrong!

It saddens me that so many fans now seem to now look at football through the prism of a balance sheet as opposed to looking forward to the thrill of the 90 plus minutes of the games themselves with our best possible players on the field.

Personally I always try to look at things pragmatically. On field is what I pay for, but its always a good idea to have an eye on the balance sheet.

The squad we are currently sitting on given where we were 5 years ago is truly outstanding. Thats largely in part to Anderson, Olise, Eze and Guehi and now Lacroix. Huge contributions on the field, but the money has allowed us to move forward as a club.

JPM has likely hit the peak of his market value. Was worth €40 at xmas, and €30m now. And with a year on his contract we either get a portion of the c.€30m, or he walks for free next summer.

Thats a big hit for a club like us to take. Especially considering thats basically the same as we've spent this summer. But its also about some of the knock ons....did we have to sell Lacroix because there was no interest in JP this window? Have we bought Khalaili and Gozo as genuine Munoz back ups? Or are we opening up the option to accept a deadline day bid for Munoz?

Ultimately letting players (with big sell on values) wind their contracts down and leave for nothing, will have implications.

Understand the reasoning, but I just don't necessarily accept it.
I'm a simple chap and in simple terms we're likely to lose less games and keep more clean sheets with e.g Lacroix and Guehi, and score more goals and win more games with Mateta than without him.
Of course it's not possible to always keep your best players, but that should be the aim as far as possible and I think what the vast majority of fans want to see when they turn up for games.
I'm sure the same argument can now be employed on Mateta as was the case with Guehi i.e we can't let him.go a free.
But we bought Mateta for around £10 million and have had more than than enough value from him and we really need his goals.
He didn't have a great season last year with injuries, loss of form and the failed transfer, but still managed 15 goals including the European winner.

For what it's worth I think we will sell him if an adequate offer comes in for him, but I for one would miss his goals, personality and contribution.
I'm far more confident of getting a result when I turn up for a game if I see Mateta on a teamsheet rather than Larsen or Nketiah.
Furthermore, if we do get £15-20 million on him, let's hope we don't lose it on another Johnson.

So Zaha (68 goals cf Mateta's 50) is already a forgotten man

Charlton fans are convinced they will be signing JRS today for a club record fee of £5m.

It's odd that all the whispers are coming from their end, it doesn't mean it wont happen though.

If it does I am happy with 5m and it should be a good move for the lad.

Yeah I dont completely disagree.

The Mateta situation is partly of his own doing. Not signing a contract, pushing for a move (to the point where an expensive replacement was bought).

I think if JP had signed a contract and was now locked in for another 4 years I wouldn't be worried about declining value. But I guess it links to the above, if he had re-signed, we wouldn't have bought JSL.

More than everything I want the club to be proactive, and decisions to be in our hands. So completely back the stance to not let Wharton go this summer at any price. Surprised, but ultimately ok with Lacroix going. And given the signings would be ok to let Munoz go if we get a good offer.

Absolutely ridiculous that we (reportedly) turned down a £10M bid from Southampton only 12 months ago!

Utterly bonkers we didn’t cash in then.

A bit harsh.

Re Guehi should we not accepted the £65m from Newcastle 18 months before we sold him based on commercial competence?

In terms of Mateta the figures being quoted aren't excessive - i've hear £20m etc which seems low IMHO.

Then let's consider what he may offer us.

An extra 5 places in the league is £15m, qualifying for the knock out phase of the Europa maybe £5m etc and in prem terms his salary is not excessive (less than half of Larsen etc).
I also think there is a possibility of relegation this season, which would see revenues halved overnight.

IMHO i would keep until January and see where we are. If a team is desperate for a striker then we should still get say £10m to 15m minimum

From a commercial perspective, that can't be undervalued. Talismanic players make money for their clubs in diverse ways.

Who else do we have to fill that role?

Keep kicking the corner flag to May I say.

He did well at Charlton during his Loan spell and was 'Supporters' Player of the Year'.
It was Ben Garner who signed him for Charlton.

With all the signings we;ve made so far - now disasi imminent, and if we can get the Danois kid over the line, it's almost like we're buiding a squad with some competition for places.

This is not the Palace way 🤣

Your right especially when it comes to a goal scorer. His goals could be crucial for league position which has a financial benefit and European success
