Nketiah doesn’t seem to be a player that Glasner has a position for. What’s worse for him is that all these very short substitute appearances prove little.
He is a forward & needs a proper run of games to get confidence & momentum.
Witness the difference between Benteke in the first season under Pardew when he played virtually every game and scored a lot of goals to the player returning from injury and being used as a substitute where he was never the same again.
 
I just think that by EPL standards he’s not that good. Certainly not £25m worth of player. Not great at holding it up, not especially good at linking play, quickish but not super rapid, ok but not lethal as a finisher. As he showed for 7 years at Arsenal and now with us he is fine as a squad player but isn’t good enough to start. I’d have had no issue with signing him on a free or for a small fee but £25m was ridiculous. Doesn’t offer any more than Edouard did.
 
As Nketiah played his preferred role down the middle yesterday, I paid particular attention to how he fared.
He missed an early chance when played through one on one on the goalkeeper and that was just about his only chance in the whole game.

He made a lot of runs into space, but as our passing was so poor yesterday he was rarely found.
Furthermore , many of the passes played up to him were punted aimlessly in the air where inevitably he lost out to their more physical defenders.
There was no sustained interplay with his fellow forwards, Sarr and Eze, and I can only recall one situation where he combined with Eze for Eze to run through and take a deflected shot.
It was also evident that when Muñoz and Mitchell got into crossing positions that they overhit the crosses while Nketiah was attacking the six yard box.

In conclusion it wasn’t the best day to assess Nketiah in his preferred role and I’m sure that many watching were hoping for Mateta’s return v Fulham.
 
I genuinely think he is a 10 rather than a 9. He’s physically not strong enough to run the line on his own.

I don’t believe he suits Glasner’s style of play but he is a half decent player who would probably operate best in a 4-4-2. Unfortunately we rarely if ever adopt that formation.

It also won’t help his confidence seeing Sarr slot into the CF position and finish from a virtually identical position from where he failed. It would appear from this and previous performances that in the absence of another out and out striker Sarr looks as good if not a better proposition as a 9.

I think that when a club our size pays 25m for a player you assume he is going to play, i thought maybe 3-4-1-2, but no, as you say good in a pair, but not so as a solo striker
 
The headline on The Sunday Times match report blares 'Sarr shows misfiring Nketiah how it's done'.

Says it all really. Unfortunately for us, and him, the lad has some learning to do before he's a competent striker. He's proved himself to be a hard worker, but he needs Ollie to help with his technique.
 
Nketiah's career record speaks for itself. However, one thing that can be said is imagine long balls lumped up to Kevin Phillips, Jermaine Defoe (both 5' 7"), or even Ian Wright (same height 5' 9") . It's not going to work.
Nketiah would be better working just off Mateta, like in the good old days Wright / Bright combo, but OG has shown (so far) that he doesn't play that system. It therefore remains a mystery why the club paid what it did for Nketiah's services, knowing the lay of the land.
 
the definition of madness : is to continue again and again, with the same failed tactics.....meanwhile hoping for a better outcome the next time.

Nketiah's honeymoon is well and truly over. Either we rapidly find a way to adapt to his strengths or he's gone. Off to join Benteke on the beach.
 
All the posts of the previous pages state exactly why I always called this a daft signing.
Dougie and his shiny lips wanted him years ago, when we played completely different tactics and formation. He should have been able to see it wasn't going to work like this but still dropped the £25m
He's a decent player, but his role isn't present in our formation.
 
Sure I'm reposting what I've already said in the thread but I can't be bothered to look so I'll just say it again.

Look, he's been pretty rubbish so far but there's been a couple of decent goals in recent games and there's definitely mitigation to his season.

He's been played largely out of position, has mostly come on as a sub and has never got a good run of games due to the form of Mateta.

Speaking of Mateta, let's not forget that it hasn't always been like this with him. There was a good couple of years of him being absolutely pony before he starting banging them in, at one point he couldn't get in the team ahead of Edoaurd.

Same with Will Hughes and probably others. Just because someone doesn't immediately become the best player in the team, doesn't mean they're useless.

Let's give him the benefit of the doubt and see if he comes on next season. Dougie gets more right than wrong so there's a good chance it suddenly clicks like it did with Sarr.

To be fair all the players looked bang average under Roy, I can see something there in Eddie and he tends to get goals in clusters, more game time will serve him well. Lerma seemed off it yesterday and has been for a few games which most probably didn’t help with getting the ball to him.
 
He has scored a fine power header for us, as well as a finesse header, both of which were prettier than we've seen from any of our strikers in a long time. I'm hoping that more match time from Chilwell can double the number of good crosses into the box, and with that, Eddie may add to his tally.

Ditto for corners. Opponents must account for Guehi, Lacroix, and Richards, all dangerous in the air, so Eddie can be very useful when JPP isn't on the pitch.
