As from 1st July next year(25/26 season) 'keepers who hold onto the ball whilst in play will be given 8 seconds to release it, this replaces the existing law of 6 seconds. Under the 'old' law failure to release the ball would result in an indirect free-kick to the opposition, under the new law, a corner will result if the 'keeper fails to release the ball.

Eight-second law: New law to tackle goalkeeper time-wasting introduced
A goalkeeper holding the ball for more than eight seconds will be punished with a corner for the opposition from this summer.
