Anyone who has been close to a pregnancy and a birth, or a termination, is emotionally impacted by it. That includes me and, I expect, the majority of those posting here.
We are all “pro life”. The differences are only though what we understand by that. For many years I was fervently opposed to abortion in any circumstances. My emotional responses dominated. As I got older my reasoning allowed rationality to take over. The rational thought being summarised in this explanation. It might not help now, but it could in future:-
“Sentient life—defined as the capacity to feel, perceive, or experience subjective sensations like pain or pleasure—is generally estimated by neuroscientists to begin around 24 to 28 weeks of fetal development, when thalamocortical pathways connecting the brain's thalamus to the cortex begin to form and function.
It is important to separate sentience (the ability to experience sensations) from biological life (which scientists widely agree starts at fertilization/conception).
Scientific and Medical Perspectives
- Fertilization: Biologists generally agree that a distinct biological human organism begins at fertilization when a sperm and egg fuse, creating unique DNA. However, this marks biological life, not sentience.
- Early Brain Activity: Primitive electrical activity in the neural tube starts around 5 to 6 weeks, but this is basic cellular function, not conscious experience.
- Threshold of Sentience: Most researchers indicate that functional neural circuits required for subjective awareness and processing tactile or painful stimuli do not operate until the third trimester, approximately 24 to 30 weeks gestation.
